Pogam Notes Thee Dances Fom the Maid Oleans I. Dance of the Bohemians By Pete I Tschaikovsky Tanscibed fo band by Col. John Bougeois The Maid of Oleans is the famed stoy of Joan of Ac. As a young child, Pete Tschaikovsky was fascinated by this stoy. In 1878, inspied by a Fiedick Schille text, Tschaikovsky wote a gand opea in fou acts titled The Maid of Oleans and it was fist staged in St. Petesbug duing 1881. The Dance of the Bohemians comes fom the second act of this opea and takes place in the medieval cout of Chales VII at Chinon. The Cout is entetained with a dance tableau featuing Bohemians, Pages, and Actos, who ae all ewaded extavagantly, although the teasuy is empty. This movement is in fou sections and featues all instuments in the ensemble. The double eeds ae pominently featued in the contasting second section of the movement. Col. John Bougeois has mastefully tanscibed this wok, which is available fom Winget-Jones Publications. The entie tansciption is in thee movements. It is a Gade 5 level of difficulty. Give Us This Day By David Maslanka The wods give us this say ae, of couse, fom the Lod s Paye, but the inspiation fo this music is Buddhist. I have ecently ead a book by the Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh (ponounced Tick Not Hahn ) entitled Fo a Futue to be Possible. His Pemise is that a futue fo the planet is only possible if individuals become deeply mindful of themselves, deeply connected to who they eally ae. While this is not a new idea, and something that is an ongoing stuggle fo eveyone, in my estimation it is the issue fo wold peace. Fo me, witing music, and woking with people to pefom music, ae two of those points of tue mindfulness. Music Makes the Connection to eality, and by eality I mean a tue awakeness and awaeness. Give Us This Day Give us this vey moment of awakeness and awae aliveness so that we can build a futue in the face of a most dangeous and difficult time. I chose the subtitle Shot Symphony fo Wind Ensemble because the music isn t eally pogammatic in natue. It has a full-blown symphonic chaacte, even though thee ae only two movements. The music of the slowe fist movement is deeply seaching, while that of the highly enegized second movement is at times both joyful and stenly sobe. The piece ends with a modal setting of the choale melody Vate Unse in Himmeleich (Ou Fathe in Heaven), #110 fom the 371 Fou-Pat Choales by J.S. Bach. Notes by the Compose The Santa Monica High School Wind Ensemble s edition of Give Us This Day was published by the Compose. It is now available though Cal Fische Music. This is a Gade 5 wok.
Loch Lomond By Fank Ticheli This setting of a taditional and well-known Scottish folksong peseves its simple cham, while also suggesting a sense of hope, and the esilience of the human spiit. The final statement combines the Scottish tune with a well-known Iish folksong Danny Boy. Ticheli happily discoveed how well these two beloved songs shaed each othe s company, and he hopes thei intemingling suggests a spiit of human hamony. Loch Lomond was commissioned by Nigel Duno, fo the Stewaton Academy Senio Wind Ensemble of East Ayshie, Scotland with funds povided by the Scottish Ats Council. The pemiee pefomance was given on June 18, 2002, by the Stewaton Academy Senio Wind Ensemble at Royal Concet Hall in Glasgow, Scotland. This piece is available though Manhattan Beach Music. This is a Gade 3 wok. Pineapple Poll No. 1 Opening Numbe No. 4 Finale By Athu Sullivan Aanged by Chales M. Mackeas and W. J. Duthoit, A. R. C. M. The musical genius of Athu Sullivan is enowned paticulaly in the musical theate. This suite of fou movements is entiely based on the music of Athu Sullivan (1842 1900) and was compiled and aanged by Chales Mackeas as numbe 768 in Chappell s Amy Jounal. Ceated fom opeatic mateial, it exemplifies the vivid divesity found with the Amy Jounal collection. The whimsical natue of this suite is consistent with Sullivan s musically satiical style. Pineapple Poll is a musical spoof of Gilbet and Sullivan opeettas. The movements of this aangement ae; No. 1 Opening Numbe, No. 2 Jaspe s Dance, No. 3 Poll s Dance, and No. 4 Finale. Each measue of the band wok, even tansitional mateial, is dawn fom some opea o anothe. A new addition of this wok is now available though Belwin. This is a vey challenging Gade 5 wok. The Ancient and Honoable Atilley Company By John Philip Sousa Many of John Philip Sousa s maches wee witten as tibutes to oganizations o commissioned by them. This paticula mach was witten fo the Ancient and Honoable Atilley Company of Massachusetts, the oldest chateed militay oganization in the wold. It now seves as an oganization that peseves patiotism and histoy and has ceased militay activity since the ealy twentieth centuy. The familia tune Auld Lang Syne stats in the tio of this mach. The B theme of the song makes up the beak-up stain, and the last stain consists of the epeat of the A theme. It is witten in typical Sousa ochestation and is a cleve use of a vey well known and endeaing melody. Santa Monica High School Maching Band pefomed this wok on New Yea s Day 2009 in the London New Yea s Day Paade. The Ancient and Honoable Atilley Company is no longe poduced by the oiginal publishe, Sam Fox but is available fom Maste s Music Company (Kalmus) in its oiginal mach folio fom. This is a Gade 4 wok.
