WELCOME TO THE TASMANIAN YOUTH ORCHESTRA! We re all about supporting young Tasmanian musicians to realise their potential, both on and off the stage. What s new this year? Northern Ensemble Workshop Program! We re bringing TYO to the north with this exciting program full of guest mentors and amazing musicians who YOU get to work with. Check out page 3 for more details. Secure your 2020 Tour position! We ll be taking our flagship TYO to Canberra for a collaborative tour with Sydney Youth Orchestra. Audition for 2019 to guarantee your seat on that trip. Read more on page 4. We warmly welcome anyone who would like to get involved in our ensembles. Our program caters to those who have been learning their instrument for only 6 months, up to those on the cusp of a professional career. There s something for musicians of all levels, aged 7 to 25. Find the perfect group for you choose from orchestras, choirs, and string, wind and percussion groups. Rehearse weekly in the company of new friends, supported by expert conductors and tutors. FIND ME AN ENSEMBLE I live in the North or North West. Check out our brand new and exciting Ensemble Workshop Program! (page 3) I play the violin, viola, cello, or double bass and am between the ages of 7 and 16. ACADEMY STRINGS OR CAMERATA STRINGS (PAGE 7) I play the violin, viola, cello, or double bass and have been playing for at least four years. Philharmonic Orchestra (page 5) or TYO (page 4) I play a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument and am between the ages of 7 and 16. Wind Ensemble (page 6) or Philharmonic Orchestra (page 5) STRINGS (PAGE 7) I play percussion and want to do something different. PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE (PAGE 6) I am in high school or university and I am playing at an instrumental grade 7 standard or higher. TYO (PAGE 4) I love music but don t play an instrument right now. JOIN our choirs (page 8) Each ensemble has catered entry points to ensure musicians are being supported in their development. We start the year on moderately easy pieces and work our way to the harder ones as the year, and players, progress. Great care is taken to find varied repertoire that is fun, instructive and musically satisfying. Which ensemble will you apply for? 2
NEW! NORTHERN ENSEMBLE WORKSHOP PROGRAM This program will run across Launceston, Devonport, and Burnie. Make new friends, learn about ensemble playing, and experience the big sound of a large group. Guest mentors, conductors, and tutors will work with students in this special workshop program. Sign up for one, two, or all three of them! Conductors and mentors will include musicians from the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Virtuosi Tasmania, and interstate specialists such as Ben Castle and Amberley Bremner. LAUNCESTON DEVONPORT BURNIE Each location will host a workshop in terms 1, 2 and 3. Term 4 will feature an all-in, mega ensemble in Devonport. You can attend as many as you like. TASMANIAN YOUTH CHORALE Not learning an instrument? Not a problem you can join a TYO choir! Work with vocal masters and rehearse with a dedicated accompanist. You ll learn how to project your voice, read music, and sing in different languages. HOW TO APPLY FIRST THINGS FIRST Decide which ensemble sounds right for you then head to tyo.org.au. Click Auditions to complete the online application form and pay the audition fee. Registrations for our Ensemble Workshop Program are also available via the TYO website. AUDITIONS All applicants must audition for a position in the 2019 TYO program. Auditions will be held over four days. Applicants can nominate days they re not available, however final times allocated will be dependent on panel and venue availability. You ll be notified on Friday 9 November, 2018. AUDITION REQUIREMENTS All applicants are required to prepare set material, which varies by ensemble. Our website has more information and excerpts are available as soon as you apply! APPLICATIONS All applications must be received by TYO by Monday 5 November, 2018. AUDITION VENUE All auditions will be held at The Hutchins School: 71 Nelson Road, Sandy Bay. AUDITION FEE Auditions require payment of a non-refundable application fee of $40. RECORDED AUDITIONS Applicants who are unable to attend a live audition can submit a recorded audition. After submitting their application, applicants should contact the TYO for recorded audition information (info@tyo.org.au). All recorded audition material must be received by TYO by Monday 19 November, 2018. ANNUAL FEE DISCOUNTS Ensemble fees are due by the first rehearsal. Payment plans and bursaries are available to those experiencing financial difficulty. Additional family members receive a 5% discount. Musicians participating in two ensembles can attend the cheaper ensemble free! FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TYO offers a range of bursaries and payment instalment options.
