A Tut s Guide to What is a Reading Check? Reading Check is how you monit the student s progress in reading. It checks: Accuracy Fluency Vocabulary Comprehension skills. Who carries it out? The person suppting the student carries out the Reading Check exercise with the student at regular intervals throughout the programme. When does it happen? Usually this is after the student has covered 4 pages of Units of Sound (UofS) Reading on the computer. There should be at least 24 hours between covering a page on the computer and the Reading Check. What is in the Reading Check Resources? There are 12 sets of Reading Check resources in each stage Each set has 2 sheets f the tut and 2 f the student The student sheets can be reused The tut sheets fm a recd and so you need a set per student What is in a Reading Check Set? Student Blocks sheet: Covers a selection of wds and sounds from 46 pages Tut Blocks moniting sheet: Cresponds to the student Blocks sheet Read it Student sheet: Covers the A page passage Tut Read it moniting sheet: Cresponds to the student Read it sheet, with passage and comprehension questions. At the end of this sheet there is an Action section, indicating what the tut should do if the student shows a lack of accuracy in the reading. How is a Reading Check carried out? Print the 2 Tut moniting sheets of the appropriate set Blocks and Read it. Or, print the whole stage when you start wking with the student. Print the 2 Student sheets of the appropriate set Blocks and Read it. Remember, these can be reused. Follow the script as set out on the Tut sheets at the beginning of the stage. Follow one of the recommendations on the Action section. If the student shows a lack of accuracy fluency you can set those pages to be covered again on the computer. Keep each Tut Reading Check moniting sheet as a recd of the student s progress. Update the student s recds online. i

A Tut s Guide to How do I know what action to take? The Reading Check, as set out here, is designed f staff in busy classrooms wking with groups of students at a time. When you hear students reading you will know if they are struggling, sounding out wds. UofS is designed to keep students at a level where they are wking comftably not where they find it hard. Trust your instincts you will know when students need me repetition, and when they don t. Actions you can take... 1. Continue If a student completes the Reading Check comftably then he will continue onto the next pages as set. 2. Reset If a student has had difficulty decoding any of the blocks then the UofS page can be reset on the program. If you have time You can use the UofS books and ask the student to read out the pages that were causing problems, including sentences and passages. This will give you a fuller idea of how well the student is decoding. You could ask followup questions on vocabulary, structure and patterns. 3. Review If the student is making me than a few errs and is finding it hard to read fluently, then you can consider redoing the Reading Placement to check the student is wking at the right level. Using Sheets & Sets There are always 2 sheets per set f the tut and 2 sheets f the student. Each Units of Sound stage has 12 sets. That s the st of dark place where the fish will breed. Then he gets up and goes to have a look. No thanks, says Ben. Remember last time when I tried to stretch out too far and fell in. 3 12A You can enjoy yourself with an old bike like this. It s the same as those stock car races where they have cars as old as they can. Errs But they smash all the cars up in races like that! 4 16A Robin Hood saw that Friar Tuck was very much awake. He put his swd at the big man s neck. Now, Friar, you will take me over the river here. Errs So Robin got on Friar Tuck s back, and gave him a sharp smack with his swd. They went on into the water. When they were some way across, Friar Tuck gave a jerk. Robin fell into the water. 5 20A I like coming to visit Uncle Alan. What I like best is getting away from town, with all its crowds and noise. All those cars, buses and trucks make noise and smells. 6 24A Tom and Mike reached the camp site quite late. Tom stopped his mot bike about ten metres from the camp fire. Errs You re later than we hoped you would be, said Jack. 7 28A It was autumn and Sally was on a visit to friends in the country. Every year she and her brother Martin had these few days away at the very end of the summer. 8 32A Ben had given his neighbour a promise. Yes, he would keep an eye on her house while she was away. There was a shrill cry and Ben could not help stumbling. As he fell fward, he put his arms up. Ben s hands, and his stick, hit Jack right in the face and they both fell down. 9 36A In 1933 two airmen flew over the top of Mount Everest. They were the first men to see the top of the mountain. Errs Mount Everest is nearly 9,000 metres high. It was finally climbed f the first time in 1953. Befe that there had been seven groups of climbers who had tried to climb it. The 1953 party set up eight camps in all, each of them nearer to the peak of Everest. Camp 8 was the last one befe the big efft to reach the top. Two climbers set off from this last camp on 28 May 1953 to try to climb the last 1,000 metres to the top. They had to carry a big load of climbing kit and they we masks to help them breathe and to keep them alive. At about 8,000 metres they found a flat place. There they set up their tent f the night. Someone once made the remark that this tent was the highest house in the wld. They started climbing at 6 o clock next mning. By 9 o clock they were in sight of the summit. They had to cut steps along the edge of a narrow ridge. But at last they struggled to the top, which was a sharp, pointed spike of frozen snow. It was halfpast eleven in the mning. To mark the 50 years since 1953, 50 groups set off to climb Everest in 2003. 10 40A The Sail s Sty I was just a boy when the great Spanish Armada came. I helped with the guns on our ship, bringing powder when fighting started. I ve seen a lot of fighting since then but I remember that first day best. The great tall ships of the Spanish lay there ahead of us. They were watching a few English ships sailing beyond them, so they didn t see us at first. Errs When we got closer they suddenly saw us. Their ships were full of soldiers in suits of armour, with helmets and great long pikes. They looked a grand sight, and they frightened me, I must admit. Then, as we went past them, they started to shoot. Our gunners cheered, because the enemy shots just splashed into the sea. Their guns were too small and weak to hit us hard. We carried on across the Spanish rear to reach their left wing. The ships here were stuck out on their own. The wind was against any others who might have wanted to help them. Then we ran out our heavy guns. We cheered Queen Elizabeth as we opened fire, but we gave blessings to old King Harry. He was the man who had dered these ships to be made. Our guns roared out together and taught the Spanish what real guns were. They couldn t touch us, but by heaven they were brave. I ve never seen braver men. 11 44A China has far me people than any other country. She claims, with good cause, to have the longest histy in the wld. Errs In the England of King Alfred, men could write and copy books. They did this by hand with pen and with paint brush. In China, at the same time, they could print books by using woodcut blocks. Long befe the birth of Christ the Chinese had traderoutes to Tibet and India. Then f hundreds of years China and her rulers had little contact with the rest of the wld. Right across the nth of their land they still had the Great Wall of China. This had been built almost two thousand years ago. It is roughly 10 metres high, and 5 metres wide at the top. It crosses hills, valleys, rivers, rocks and sand. Its total length is about one thousand five hundred miles. However, things have now changed. China has become a wld power.
