Lesson: 99 The verb PIACERE (to like) #4 Replying to PIACERE Ti piace la musica rap? Do you like rap music? Sì, [mi piace] [la musica rap] Yes, I do [like] [rap music] No, [non mi piace] [la musica rap] No, I don t [like] [rap music] No, non mi piace la musica rap, ma mi piace la musica R&B. No, I don t like rap music, but I like R&B music. A te piace la musica rap? Do you like rap music? [Sì!] A me sì [piace la musica rap] Yes, I do [like] [rap music] [No!] A me no [non piace la musica rap] No, I don t [like] [rap music] The implication using the stressed pronoun in the question is that: 1) There are more people that I am going to ask or more people in the room 2) I am expecting a difference of opinion from mine 1

What happened to the indirect object pronoun? A ME is already replacing the Indirect Object Pronoun MI, so technically we would be saying the same thing twice if we used it in the above replies. The most common and practical answer to the above questions is simply: A me sì A me no Yes, I do (to me yes) No, I don t (to me no) The use of the stressed pronoun again suggests a possible contrast or difference of opinion from the person asking the question. Other possible replies Sì, molto Sì, moltissimo Sì, abbastanza Sì, ma poco Mmmm... poco No, per niente No, affatto Yes, a lot Yes, really a lot Yes, kind of / enough Yes, but little / not much Mmmm a little / not much No, not at all No, not at all Answer these questions Ti piace la verdura? Ti piacciono gli spinaci? Le piace andare a teatro? A Lei piacciono i film di Fellini? A Lei piace il mango? Do you like vegetables? Do you like spinach? Do you like to go to the theatre, Ma am / Sir? Do you like the films of Fellini, Ma am / Sir? Do you like mangoes, Ma am / Sir? 2

Agreeing with PIACERE (me too) I speak Italian >> Parlo Italiano Me too >> Anch io I like art >> Mi piace l arte Me too >> * Anch io??? As I am not the subject, you CANNOT say ANCH IO. As PIACERE is all about something being pleasing TO somebody, then if you want to agree, you have to say that that thing is pleasing TO ME TOO. The correct way to agree to a positive statement about LIKING is:: ANCHE A + Stressed Pronoun Anche a me Anche a te Anche a lei Anche a lui Anche a Lei Anche a noi Anche a voi Anche a loro Me too (also to me) You too (also to you) Her as well (also to her) Him as well (also to him) You too (also to you) Us too (also to us) You guys too (also to you guys) Them too (also to them) The pronouns are only appropriate if we already know to WHOM it is pleasing. If this isn t already known, then we simply use the same structure but replace the pronoun with the name or noun. Anche a lei >> anche a Roberta Anche a lui >> anche a Massimo Anche a loro >> anche a Roberta e Massimo >> anche agli studenti di italiano 3

Agreeing with PIACERE - Negative I don t speak Chinese >> Non parlo cinese Me neither >> Neanch io I don t like art >> Non mi piace l arte Me neither >> * Neanch io??? Again, we can t reply NEANCH IO to a PIACERE question, because what we want to say is actually neither to me. The appropriate response is: NEANCHE A + Stressed Pronoun Neanche a me Neanche a te Neanche a lei Neanche a lui Neanche a Lei Neanche a noi Neanche a voi Neanche a loro Neither to me Neither to you Neither to her Neither to him Neither to you Neither to us Neither to you guys Neither to them Disagreeing with PIACERE - positive statement I like art I, on the other hand, do not A me piace l arte A me invece no A me piace l arte, e a te? A me no! INVECE = instead / on the other hand 4

Disagreeing with PIACERE - negative statement I don t like art I, on the other hand, do A me non piace l arte A me invece sì A me non piace l arte, e a te? A me sì! Manu s Tips 1) It s still all about being pleasing TO SOMEONE. 2) To agree with a positive LIKING statement you are going to use: ANCHE A ME 3) To agree with a negative LIKING statement you are going to use: NEANCHE A ME 4) To disagree with a positive LIKING statement you are going to use: A ME INVECE NO 5) To disagree with negative LIKING statement you are going to use: A ME INVECE SÌ 5
