ABOUT COMMUNITY MUSIC SCHOOL Building community through music since 1983. Community Music School (CMS), a not-for-profit arts organization, has been meeting the musical education needs of shoreline families for more than 30 years. Nearly 500 students of all ages and abilities benefit from private instrumental and vocal lessons, group classes for beginners, performing ensembles, early childhood music education, musical theater, music therapy, and summer programs. Our talented faculty and students perform throughout the year, sharing the joy of music with our community. PRIVATE LESSONS Private lessons are the core of our program and are offered during a 17-week Fall Semester (September-January) and 17-week Spring Semester (January June). Registration obligates the student to complete the semester from the point of enrollment and reserves your instructor's time at that specific time period each week. Weekly private lessons can be arranged for 30, 45 or 60 minutes each week. For some instruments, it is possible to arrange semi-private lessons through consultation with the Business Office. Up to 3 single lessons can be scheduled to evaluate readiness with no further obligation. Single lessons are $37 per half hour and are payable at the time of registration. All private lesson students have the opportunity to: Perform through studio, department and school-wide recitals, and community concerts Work with professional accompanists Attend workshops presented by CMS faculty and guest artists Attend Master Classes presented by visiting artists Utilize CMS practice rooms and performance spaces Participate in a Mock Audition Day for regional and statewide auditions Receive discounts on additional private lessons If you would like to study an instrument that is not listed, please let us know as we are delighted to expand our offerings as demand warrants. Tuition for 17-week semester 30 minutes...$ 612.00 45 minutes...$ 918.00 60 minutes...$1,224.00 There is a $15 registration fee per student, per semester. 5% discount for siblings or multiple sets of lessons. 10% discount for students age 65 and over. Scholarship applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but families are encouraged to submit as soon as possible for consideration. 4

FIRST NOTES Fall classes begin September 12 Spring classes begin January 30 SPARROWS ~ Lap babies and crawlers, 6 to 12 months (with caregiver) WEDNESDAYS, 11:00am- 11:45am for 16 weeks; Tuition: $175 This class will center on learning to play musically with your child through bounces, wiggles, tickles, simple songs, and lullabies. Caregivers and babies will explore simple rhythm instruments and engage in circle games and dances but with plenty of time for at your own pace musical exploration and social interaction. BLUEBIRDS ~ Walkers, 12 to 24 months (with caregiver) WEDNESDAYS, 10:00am-10:45am for 16 weeks; Tuition: $175 Walkers are full of energy and love expressing themselves with their whole bodies! Action songs, games, and dances will be at the center of this class along with opportunities to explore sound by manipulating a wide variety of rhythm instruments and learning to sing simple songs. ROBINS ~ Toddlers, 2 and 3 year olds (with caregiver) WEDNESDAYS, 9:00am-9:45am for 16 weeks; Tuition: $175 Two and three year olds are ready for greater variety of movement and song and love to express themselves musically and in dramatic ways. We will begin to make music as a group, learning to interact with others, listen carefully, and follow simple instructions. Fundamental musical concepts of rhythm and pitch will be introduced, and social aspects of music making -playing and dancing as a group, mimicking sound patterns, etc. will be at the center of our class. 5

EAGLES ~ 4 and 5 year olds (without caregiver) WEDNESDAYS, 1:00-1:45pm for 16 weeks; Tuition: $350 Eagles is a part of the CMS First Notes curriculum for 4-5 year olds, and is designed to prepare young children to begin private music lessons! Using glockenspiels and recorders, this instrumental group class will focus on pre-note reading skills, listening and self-control using games and group activities. *A $15 registration fee is applied once per semester, per student Stayed tuned for family Flock pop-up classes! 6

GROUP CLASSES Group classes provide a great introduction and foundation in music and are offered in several areas. The social interaction helps children stay motivated and challenged in a supportive, friendly environment. Most groups continue from Fall to Spring semester with a progressive curriculum and prepare students to move on to private instruction. Additional group classes can be formed based on interest. Classes may be delayed or canceled if sufficient enrollment is not reached. There is a $15 registration fee per student, per semester. Fall classes begin the week of September 11 unless otherwise noted Spring classes begin the week of January 29 unless otherwise noted EAGLES CLASS - FOR 4 AND 5 YEAR OLDS Wednesdays, 1-1:45pm, 16 weeks, $350 Eagles is a part of the CMS First Notes curriculum for 4-5 year olds, and is designed to prepare young children to begin private music lessons! Using glockenspiels and recorders, this instrumental group class will focus on pre-note reading skills, listening and self-control using games and group activities. PIANO Beginning Group Piano Ages 6-9, Day/Time TBD based on interest, 16 weeks, $350 Using the Alfred Beginning Piano Course book, students will be introduced to the basics of music notation as well as proper hand and finger technique. The class will be taught on our 88-key Yamaha digital pianos, which contain 500 sampled and synthesized sounds. A home piano or keyboard is recommended for practice. Limited to 4 students per class, book included. Digital Piano Workshop with Tom Briggs Adults/Homeschool Students, 8 weeks, Day/Time TBD, 45 minutes For students with at least one year of private piano instruction, $125 Explore the unique capabilities of our exciting new state-of-the-art YPG Yamaha digital pianos and perform creative musical arrangements that 7

GROUP CLASSES are tailored for the group level. Musical styles range from classical to jazz to popular music, and kids songs. Reinforce note reading and an understanding of chords, clefs, and rhythms while exploring the contemporary digital sounds. Students will be grouped by experience. VIOLIN Violin Karate with Martha Herrle, for beginners Ages 6-8, Fridays, 4:00-4:45pm, 16 weeks starting Sept. 7 $350 + $15 registration fee, $50 violin rental available An achievement-levels based program of group violin instruction for children ages 6-8. Students will earn multi-colored belts to display on their violins by passing through multiple levels of proficiency. Using violin specific games and friendly competition students will learn progressively more difficult familiar tunes in the quest for the highly coveted Black Belt! Students will learn initially by ear, but note reading will be introduced early and encouraged. This class is meant to serve as a prelude to private study. A rental violin is available for $50 for the duration of the class. SUZUKI INSTRUCTION FOR VIOLIN, CELLO AND GUITAR Suzuki Instruction differs from traditional instruction in that parents are encouraged to be actively involved in their child s lessons and should be prepared to work with the child at home between lessons. We accept violin and cello students as young as 3½ or 4 years of age and guitar students starting at age 4. Pre-Twinklers, the youngest students, have a private lesson each week. Once they begin studying in Suzuki Book 1, violin students also have a weekly ensemble class. Parents/caregivers should plan on attending lessons with their child. Private Suzuki Instruction is offered for violin and cello for a 17-week semester. Suzuki Violin Ensemble with Marianna Kiss - $275, 45 minutes, Mondays, 6:45-7:30pm There is a $15 registration fee per student, per semester. ENSEMBLES Playing in a group is an important part of music education and a valuable supplement to private lessons. Students find enrichment through ensemble participation and the responsibility of playing with others helps with sight reading, counting, multitasking, and leadership skills. The ensemble experience also provides the opportunity to perform for a live audience. All are welcome to join an ensemble whether or not they are also taking private lessons. A $15 registration feel applies for those not currently enrolled. Fall rehearsals begin the week of September 10 Spring rehearsals begin the week of January 28 ACOUSTIC CLASSIC ROCK ENSEMBLE with Kevin O Neil Adults, for guitar/electric bass, Fridays, 2-3pm, 16 weeks, $250 Focus on the best classic rock from bands such as The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and more in this weekly ensemble. Chords and melodic material explored along with technique and musicality. CHAMBER CONNECTIONS with Martha Herrle, Day/Time TBD All ages, for woodwind, brass, strings and piano 16 weeks, $285 per semester Playing in a group is a significant component of music education and a valuable supplement to private lessons. Small group ensembles are assembled as trios, quartets, and quintets based on proficiency, instrumentation, and musical interests. FANTASTIC FIDDLERS STRING BAND with Martha Herrle All ages, for violin, viola, cello, bass, guitar, banjo, ukulele, mandolin any instrument with strings we want you to play with us! Tuesdays, 5:00-5:45 pm, $195 per year First Time Fiddlers String Band is open to fiddle music lovers of all ages and playing ability. If you play the If you DON T play a stringed instrument but this sounds like just too much fun, how about joining us with a washboard, a jug or a set of spoons? We will be playing traditional American (and maybe some Irish!) fiddle tunes. You will receive a book of music, but reading music is not mandatory to play in this group. If you have a good ear and just want to play along, you re 9

ENSEMBLES welcome too! Performances include the CMS Holiday Concert and spring finale. Meets at Old Saybrook High School. JAZZ ENSEMBLE with Tom Briggs Ages 13-18, Wednesdays, Time TBD, 16 weeks, $195 per semester This premiere ensemble is suited for intermediate and advanced instrumentalists (brass, woodwind, percussion & strings) who want to expand their performance level in the world of jazz. The repertoire includes classics by man of the great jazz composers as well as traditional and modern jazz selections. The musical format strongly emphasizes improvisation. Charts are tailored to the instrumentation and proficiency level of each member. Performances include our holiday concert as well as the end of the semester public performance. Audition required for new members. NEW HORIZONS BAND with Patricia Hurley Adults, Mondays and Thursdays, 10:45 am-noon, 16 weeks beginning 9/10; sectional rehearsals also offered $295 per semester A supportive group for beginners or those who haven t played an instrument in years. There are no auditions and everyone is welcome! Band rehearsals are twice a week with performances scheduled during the semester. Standard literature graded level 2-3 in all styles and genres performed. STRING ENSEMBLE with Martha Herrle All ages, Tuesdays, 6:00-7:30 pm, $195 per year This amazing multi-generational string orchestra has members from age 8 to 80! Music of a wide variety of styles from classical to pop is featured at an intermediate to advanced level. All violins, violas, cellos and basses are welcome. Performances include the CMS Holiday Concert and spring finale. Meets at Old Saybrook High School. STUDIO 24 VOCAL PERFORMANCE CLASS with Shari Wilcox Adults, Fridays, Choose 10 11 am or 11:15 am-12:15 pm, 16 weeks, $500 per semester starting Sept. 21 As vocal and acting coach, Shari Wilcox will unveil, enlighten and inspire the students to fully express themselves through song and movement 10

TUTTI FLUTIE FLUTE ENSEMBLE with Cheryl Six (East Lyme Studio) All ages, intermediate and advanced students Mondays, 6:00-7:00pm, 16 weeks beginning September 10th, $260 A fun and challenging weekly ensemble experience that will help develop your sight-reading and listening skills, improve your intonation, and make you a better all-around flutist. Explore a variety of flute repertoire including folk, classical, TV/movie music, and jazz with a variety of quartets, trios and works for larger ensembles. ADDITIONAL COURSE OFFERINGS RECORDING AND PRODUCING MUSIC WITH GARAGEBAND with Tom Briggs Ages 12-17, Private or Semi-Private Lessons, 45 or 60 minutes, 8 weeks For students with musical skills and a strong interest in creative contemporary music Learn the basics of Apple s GarageBand music software with the goal of creating songs and developing your musical ideas into fully produced arrangements. Learn about digital recording, midi, and how to connect your computer to a digital piano. Projects can combine virtual software instrument multi track recording with live audio performance. You can edit, transpose, and add effects to your project and make an mp3 recording to share your music. Owning an Apple computer and digital piano is not required, but a plus. 11

MUSIC THERAPY Music therapy combines the fields of music education and therapy to enhance the development of life skills and can be beneficial to people of any age regardless of musical skill or background. It has been successful in improving language skills, motor skills, self-expression, learning, social interaction and personal awareness. People of all ages with unique needs can benefit from music therapy: Neurological Disorders & Brain Injury Chronic Illness & Oncology Developmental Disabilities & Autism Spectrum Physical Disabilities & Sensory Impairment Alzheimer s Disease & Dementia Our board-certified music therapists work with students through both private instruction and group lessons at CMS, in the public school classroom, wellness programs, or other locations. Comprehensive Music Therapy services at CMS include: Assessment gathering information relevant to client needs Treatment Planning developing strategies to address short and long-term goals and objectives Implementation providing evidence-based music therapy strategies/interventions Evaluation and Documentation collecting and documenting information relevant to client responses and progress Music Therapy Session Fee: $50 per private 30-minute session Group Session Fees are based on number of participants. KATE S CAMP FOR KIDS - SCHOOL YEAR PROGRAM Wednesdays, 3:45-5:15pm at The Kate in Old Saybrook! Cost: $165 per session Ages 5-10 FALL SHOW: "My Marvelous Magical Sleigh" October 10-November 28 Decorations are in place, and everything is set for the upcoming holiday party, except for an old dilapidated sleigh with a sign "Marvelous Magical Sleigh." Join the holiday adventure of one small child who believes in the true meaning of the holiday and is taken for a marvelous ride on one very important and magical sleigh. SPRING SHOW: "HATS!" January 30-March 13 Hats of all shapes and sizes take over the stage when a group of milliners help Hatless Hank find the perfect hat. A clever rhyming script and songwriting explore all kinds of hats, their uses and the people who wear them. Discover that it's not the hat that makes a person special, but what's underneath. 13

SUMMER AT CMS Summer at CMS is busy with a variety of music and performing arts programs for all ages! In addition to our state-licensed day camp, Kate s Camp for Kids, we also offer private and beginner group lessons, the Broadway Bound Musical Theater Experience, Kindermusik, Cello Ensemble, and Summer Band. Summer registration opens in March. Kate s Camp for Kids brings together professional teaching artists from CMS and other partner organizations to the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center. This arts day camp for ages 5 to 10 is filled with music, dance, art, and theater and each week culminates in a performance for family and friends! Broadway Bound Musical Theater Experience is an intense two-week program for ages 8 to 15 that gives your child the opportunity to experience every aspect of staging a musical with singing, dancing, acting, and assembling costumes, all in just 10 days! These shows are abridged, fully -licensed presentations and over the past 15 years, productions have included The Little Mermaid, Jr., Peter Pan, Jr., Cats, Elf Jr., and The Lion King among others. 14
