nivers tyinter ationa l l u b SPRING PROGRAMME 2012 FOUNDED IN 1998 AARHUS AU UNIVERSITY
2 SPRING PROGRAMME 2012 WELCOME TO THE With the start of the new year 2012, we at the University International Club (UIC) are presenting our Spring Programme and warmly invite all AU foreign staff members and their spouses, as well as everyone associated with the International Community, to benefit from our weekly activities. This programme covers the first half of the year and includes a wide selection of seminars, meetings, events and 2 excursions, whilst we are also planning a larger excursion for June. February starts with a couple of afternoon arrangements, both of which you need to sign up for in advance. The first is an exciting event in cooperation with Global Talent, where artist Erik A. Frandsen has been invited to come and talk about his art under the title Between Memory and Theft, whilst Professor Leif Østergaard from AU s Center for Functionally Integrative Neuroscience will talk about What your brains do for you. For further details, see the separate program on the website. On the following day, Wednesday 8 February, all parents and parents-to-be are then invited to a Grand Tour of International Schools in Greater Aarhus, free of charge, with the tour intending to help international parents decide on what education to offer their families. There will therefore be a brief introduction at all the international schools in the Aarhus area, from the kindergarten and the upcoming school at AAGE, to the long standing ISAa and then finally finishing at Langkjer Gymnasium. Other seminars this year are focused on Danish literature, history and the art of the Anastasia, the huge ceiling artwork on AU campus and the largest in DK. This serves as a small appetizer to the extensive AU Art collection across the campus, which is well worth exploring.
SPRING PROGRAMME 2012 3 SPRING PROGRAMME 2012 On the agenda in April is a seminar focused on advertising, a highly influential and important aspect of our modern society, and will include discussions on subliminal advertising and the different affects on different cultures. In May a seminar focuses on Managing Identities in an Era of Globalization, whilst in another seminar we will learn about the history of Aarhus Symphony Orchestra as well as the set-up of an orchestra in general. Furthermore, once again we will see the return of Assistant Professor Beverly P. Mortensen, who last November shared her reflections as a Nobel wife, and this semester will present some of her academic work under the title The Varieties of God in the Hebrew Bible. As usual, this semester s programme also includes a Tax Seminar on How to navigate the Danish tax system and a presentation about pension plans in DK. Be sure to check for further details on the UIC website. With the vast array of subject matters covered this semester, we hope that there will be some new topics for all to learn from. The UIC has been helping newcomers at AU to settle in since 1998 and welcomes people from all nations, educational backgrounds and languages, although English is commonly spoken. We encourage a positive atmosphere and will do our best to help you enjoy your stay and hopefully lead to you settle here for good. It is possible to sign up for the weekly UIC Newsletter to read about what is on in the greater Aarhus area, including information of general interest. Monday mails provide the latest updates with respect to upcoming events. In regards to language training, turn to the UIC website for more information. Should you require further information, please do contact us. We look forward to welcoming you. Gitte Haahr-Andersen UIC Organiser
