2015 MAGAZINE MEDIA AWARDS JUDGING PANEL Barry Williamson, Senior Consultant, 3rd Eye Barry Williamson has 45 years experience across integrated and media agencies, ranging from account management and general management, to Media Strategy. Barry has worked in media planning at both creative and specialist media agencies, with his last roles being in media buying agencies. He has held Media Director roles at McCann Erickson, Saatchi and Generator and more recently at MEC (now Y&R Media). Barry now enjoys his involvement in this great industry from the outside as a Senior Consultant for 3rdeye Recruitment, an agency specialising in recruitment for the communications industry specialising in Media placements. Barry has had a long association with the industry in general through involvement with CAANZ across the Media Awards, Media training and various industry projects. He has been recognised twice for his contribution to the industry. Brendon Hill, Publisher, Bauer Media Brendon is responsible for a portfolio of 13 leading magazine brands covering a diverse range of genres from Homes & Food to Women s Interest, Health, Fashion, Current Affairs and Custom Publishing. He strives for continuous improvement of the magazine s editorial offering and increasing consumer interactions with the brands across multiple platforms. Brendon recently transferred from the Australian office which he joined in 2005 and was Publisher of the Specialist Divisions 28 brands. Cathy Parker, Publisher, Adrenalin Publishing Cathy is the publisher at Adrenalin Publishing. She started in magazine publishing 22 years ago after purchasing two magazines and now oversees eight mastheads. Her previous background includes engineering, and sales and management roles across several industries. She has been a MPA board member for over 10 years. Clare O Higgins, GM, LGFB Claire O Higgins has been a media executive for 20 plus years. Her career has spanned research, sales, marketing management and corporate with experience at APN, Fairfax Media and independent magazine publishers. More recently she is the CEO of the non for profit charity Look Good Feel Better. Duncan Brough, Commerical Manager, Fairfax Media Duncan is the Commercial Manager of the Magazines division of Fairfax Media, he oversees the profitability of a stable of 16 magazines and their digital counterparts. Duncan has spent a decade in advertising and media specializing in sales and revenue generation, and has achieved many accomplishments over his career. He is proud of the work the team at Fairfax do every day and the little bit we all add in this industry to inspiring Kiwis throughout their lives.

Hayley McLarin, Senior Account Director, Good PR Hayley McLarin has a strong journalism and publishing pedigree having worked for major media outlets both in New Zealand and the UK. Herself an award-winner, Hayley was an editor-in-chief of a portfolio of national magazines whilst also editing the weekly title New Idea. Prior to that she was a writer for Woman s Day and national newspapers including the Daily Mirror in London and the Sunday Star Times in New Zealand. James Frankham, Publisher, Kowhai Media James Frankham is director at Kōwhai Media, publisher of New Zealand Geographic, Pro Photographer and Mana magazines. His background is in film and screen media, providing a special focus for the organisation s growing suite of digital products and the host of opportunities for interaction with the popular titles in print. Jenni Anyan, Netlink Jenni Anyan is Head of Client Services at Netlink. During her career she has held various roles in circulation and retail marketing, at distribution and publishing companies in New Zealand and the UK. John Baker, Publisher & Content Director, Tangible Media Publisher Consumer Media and Director of Content Marketing at Tangible Media. John has been in magazines and media for over 20 years, focussed largely on niche and specialist media. John is a vocal advocate for magazines and is a long time board member of the MPA including a two year term as Chairman. More recently, with the evolution of media and advertising, John has led the development of Tangible s content marketing and owned media capability, building a roster of many high profile clients. Kim Solomon, Gordon & Gotch Kim has been in the Magazine Distribution Industry for 11 years in a variety of roles as a Trade Marketing Analyst, Key Account Manager for Retail Clients and is currently a Publisher Account Manager at Gordon & Gotch. Her experience in implementing Distribution and Marketing plans, involvement in New Title launches into the market and the development of strategic business plans for Key Retail Clients has given her a clear insight into the key aspects of what makes a magazine title successful in the ever-changing Magazine Publishing Market. Kirsty Cameron, The Hobson Kirsty Cameron is the editor/publisher/owner of The Hobson, an Auckland community magazine. She has worked as a journalist, editor, editor-in-chief, editorial director and publisher across a range of media platforms in Australia, the US and NZ. Her previous employers have included News Limited, Time Inc (where she was launch editor of the Australian edition of InStyle), ACP (now Bauer), and New Zealand Magazines/APN (now NZME).

Lynley Belton, National Distribution Manager, Fairfax Lynley currently leads the Distribution function for Fairfax NZ. She has spent 20 years in the print industry primarily in magazines in a variety of roles including General Manager of Gordon & Gotch and Fairfax Magazines. She is a former chairperson of the MPA plus has served as an industry representative on the Audit Bureau of Circulation and the Advertising Standards Complaints Board. Megan McChesney, Freelance writer Megan McChesney has more than 30 years experience in journalism most of them in magazines. She has edited a number of titles including Cleo and Lucky Break and has been editor-in chief of Woman s Day and the Australian Women s Weekly. She currently works in Auckland as a freelance writer. Melissa Gardi, Associate Publisher, Tangible Media With more than 20 years experience in creating both commercial and editorial content, Melissa Gardi is Publisher/Editorial Director - Women s Lifestyle for Tangible Media which includes the award winning magazines New Zealand Weddings, Good, Little Treasures and Living Well. After starting her career in advertising, it was Melissa s passion for storytelling that led her to pursue a profession in magazines. Twice awarded Editor of the Year by the MPA, her diverse resumé has seen her develop a welltrained eye for inspirational content, having held positions at iconic American title Harper s Bazaar and pop culture title Interview Magazine. Michael Fayela, Director of Digital, Bauer Media Michael joined Bauer Media in January 2015 to lead the fast growing digital business and team. With formal qualifications in business and digital marketing Michael s management experience spans both client side and media side. Most recently Michael spent three years as Digital Publisher delivering strong audience and revenue growth across digital lifestyle products at NZME. Mike Watson, Bauer Media Mike Watson is the art director at Taste magazine. Under his direction Taste won Best Magazine Design at the 2014 Canon Awards. Previous to his current role Mike has worked as a designer at many titles, predominately Metro and North & South Nicholas Burrowes, The Pluto Group Nicholas Burrowes is GM of The Pluto Group, and has led the growth of their key title of homestyle at retail and commercially. Nicholas also sits on the board of the MPA, and is an ardent magazine follower of both domestic and international titles in print and online.

Paul Gardiner, Commercial Director, Bauer Media Paul s career started in the Agency sector, over the past 18 years Paul has held senior media sales roles with Haymarket Publishing in the UK, Fairfax, APN and Time Inc South Pacific. He joined Bauer in 2007 and was appointed the Commercial Director in 2011. Paul is responsible for the advertising revenue across Bauer s consumer portfolio as well as working with the team on large projects. Scott Copeland, Designer, Marketplace Media Scott is a creative director who has been in the design industry for 14 years, 12 of which have been in the magazine industry. Scott s career has spanned everything from branding, packaging, magazines, point of sale, web and now mobile design. As a multiple MPA winner, he was looking forward to his first year participating in the judging process. Simon Wilson, Editor at large, Bauer Media Simon Wilson is the editor of Metro, the magazine devoted to the culture, current affairs and lifestyles of Auckland city. Simon began his career in journalism as editor of the Victoria University student newspaper Salient, and moved to magazines in 1985, as a subeditor and then chief subeditor of the New Zealand Listener. He was editor of Consumer for 12 years from 1991 and then editor of Cuisine, before becoming a staff writer at Metro in 2007. He has been at the helm of Metro for five years. Tania Greig, ex-publisher, Fitness NZ Tania was the founder, publisher and editor of Fitness Life magazine; which was NZ s best-selling health and fitness magazine until she sold it after ten years in 2012. Tania was responsible for the editorial direction, design, production and marketing, as well as business management for the three key revenue streams: advertising, retail and subscriptions. Tania achieved several accolades for Fitness Life including a Gold Award at the Pride in Print Awards and a Gold Award at the Australasian Promotional Products Association Pyramid Awards. Tania also developed and ran the Fitness Life Awards event from 2005-2009 before selling the event to Fitness NZ. She has since worked on several short-term projects in the magazine/media industry, is currently involved in talent sourcing and management across a range of sectors, and writes for therouse.com. Tanya Walshe, GM Insights and Associate Publisher, Bauer Media Tanya has 25 years experience in media working across marketing, strategy and insights. Tanya and her team provide deep consumer understanding and actionable media insights across all Bauer NZ magazine brands. Adding to her insights remit are publishing responsibilities. Trudy Parsons-Smith Trudy is one of New Zealand s most well recognised advertising professionals; enjoying an outstanding career. Having been involved with some of New Zealand s leading magazine and newspaper launches including Sunday Star-Times, NZ House & Garden and NZ Life & Leisure she s gone on to win virtually every sales award in the industry. Trudy loves her clients and her colleagues and says that the relationships formed during her career have led to some of her best friendships today.

Most recently her love of food and entertaining led her to Food magazine. She left Food in 2014 to travel the world at her leisure and is currently enjoying life to the fullest. Vicki Febery, Ink Marketing Vicki Febery is a marketing consultant, working predominantly with independent New Zealand publishers on their business strategy and consumer and trade marketing initiatives. During her career she s worked for some of the largest magazine publishers and brands both here and the UK and for a leading business analytics agency in New Zealand. Described by one client as a marketing demon for hire, she gets a buzz from delivering effective marketing campaigns and seeing her clients succeed. Vicki recently relocated to Taupo with her family and when she s not consulting, she s honing her skiing demon skills too. Vincent Heeringa, Publisher Business Media, Tangible Media Vincent Heeringa is a director of Tangible Media, whose love affair with magazines started at secondary school when he launched his own youth title in Upper Hutt. It didn t last. But the passion remains. Virginia Larsen, Bauer Media Virginia Larson is editor of North & South magazine. She has a long history with the magazine, having also held the positions of deputy editor and staff writer. Prior to joining North & South, Virginia spent five years in Los Angeles, where she was West Coast correspondent for the London Daily Mail and an occasional reporter for Australian radio stations. She began her career in magazines, as a staff writer for the New Zealand Woman s Weekly. Wendy Barnard, Custom Publishing, Fairfax Wendy Barnard has worked at Fairfax Magazines for over 12 years and is currently Manager of Fairfax s Custom Publishing division. She manages complete magazine production from content creation to pre-press and print for a wide range of custom print media from lifestyle, sport and pet magazines to cookbooks and advertorials. Yolanta Woldendorp, Art Director, Fairfax Yolanta Woldendorp has worked as a multi-award-winning magazine art director for 30 years in both Australia and New Zealand, designing weeklies, teen magazines and home titles. She conceptualized NZ Life & Leisure 10 years ago and continues to put her individual stamp on this leading publication.

Amanda Midgely, Group Marketing, Media Works Radio Brands Angela Pederson, GM, OHbaby! Annie Gray, Publisher, Tourism Business Magazine Phil Walter, Photographer, Getty Images Phil has been a news and sport photographer for 20 years, beginning at Fotopress in the mid 90 s. Phil has also worked for two years in London and then with Getty Images upon his return to New Zealand. In that time he covered four summer Olympics, Football, Rugby and Cricket World Cups, Tennis Grand Slams, Commonweath Games, Royal Tours, natural disasters in the Asia/Pacific Region and two Fiji coups. Pip Simeon, Customer Solutions Marketing Manager, Fairfax Media Carin Hercock, Executive Director, Commerical Insights at Neilson Steve Bohling, Editor in Chief, Marketplace Media Fiona McCauley, Head of Customer Experience, My Food Bag Helen Sissons, Curriculum leader of Journalism, AUT Simon Little, Publisher, Marketplace Media Liz Badenhorst, Distribution Manager, Fairfax Media Liz been managing retail sales at Fairfax Magazines for the past 10 years.
