Mozart s FINAL MOMENTS The movie poster for Amadeus claims The Man The Music The Madness The Murder The Motion Picture Everything You ve Heard is True. Great marketing, but false advertising! Many tales have been told about Mozart s colorful life and his death. Most of us know about his final years from watching the Academy Award-winning Best Picture of 1984. Antonio Salieri is portrayed as Mozart s rival who drove him to death and even confesses to his murder. What a great movie! But it s definitely fiction. The truth, however, is hard to confirm. Commissioned to write a requiem, and increasingly ill, Mozart came to believe that he was writing the music for his own funeral at least, according to his wife. There s no evidence that Mozart was poisoned or in any other way murdered, but he did die in December 1791, only 35 years old, leaving the Requiem an unfinished masterpiece. SEASON 2018/2019 19
Walking in Mozart s Shoes Many well-meaning composers and musicologists have tried to complete Mozart s Requiem. Today, we ll perform the Robert Levin edition, considered one of the best. Levin, a foremost Mozart expert, called the Requiem one of the central works of our civilization, speaking to Harvard Magazine in 1995. He first worked on the Requiem completion in 1968 as part of his senior thesis at Harvard! In what the New York Times called an audacious creative act, he later completed his edition of the Requiem in 1991 before returning to Harvard as a professor in 1995. 20 capesymphony.org
