BIOGRAPHIES Carlos Abril is Associate Professor and Coordinator of Music Education at the Northwestern University Bienen School of Music, where he teaches courses in elementary general music, cultural diversity, and philosophy of music education. His research focuses on cultural diversity in music education, arts education policy, and music perception. He has presented his work nationally and internationally, and published articles in journals such as Journal of Research in Music Education, Orff Echo, International Journal of Music Education, Music Educators Journal, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, and Music Education Research. He serves on various editorial boards in the U.S. and Europe, including the Orff Echo and Journal of Research in Music Education. Abril recently co- edited the book, Musical Experience in Our Lives: Things We Learn and Meanings We Make (Rowman & Littlefield). His music arrangements and instructional materials are published by World Music Press and appear in the Macmillan/McGraw- Hill textbook series, Spotlight on Music. He has completed all Orff levels in the United States and also studied at the Orff Institute in Salzburg. Robert Amchin is a Distinguished Teaching Professor of music education and the head of the music education/therapy division at the University of Louisville. He teaches undergraduate and graduate classes in teacher education and research. He studied at the Orff Institute, New England Conservatory of Music, Memphis State University, Hofstra University, Hamline University, and the University of Michigan. He taught elementary music in Spring, Texas and still works with children in the Kentucky area as an artist- in- residence. Rob presents Orff teacher- training courses, as well as local, state and national conferences and workshops. He has led international presentations in China, Peru, Austria, Israel, Russia Poland, Canada. He has published collections of compositions and arrangements for music educators. Dr. Amchin enjoys exploring current trends in teacher education, creative thinking, early childhood, movement education, integrated arts curricula, and world musics. Judy Bond is Professor of Music and Coordinator of Music Education at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point, where she also directs the UWSP Women s Choir. She is a past- president of the American Orff- Schulwerk Association, and serves as past- chair and newsletter editor of the Alliance for Active Music Making. She has presented Orff sessions and courses at national and state conferences as well as internationally, and has taught Orff Levels 1, 2, and 3. Her international teaching includes courses taught for the Chinese Orff Association. An active church musician, Judy is currently serving on the board of the Presbyterian Association of Musicians. She is an author of SHARE THE MUSIC and SPOTLIGHT ON MUSIC, published by Macmillan/McGraw- Hill.
Jay Broeker is an elementary music specialist, and college instructor with certification in both Orff and Kodaly approaches. He has taught, conducted, and arranged music for children and adults in Indiana, Texas, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania. He frequently presents workshops in Orff Schulwerk, recorder, and curriculum materials at national conferences and workshops in many states. He teaches at Blake Elementary School in Minneapolis. Jay is also a regular summer faculty at the University of St. Thomas and is one of the authors of Share the Music. Brian Burnett is a music specialist for the Rossford Schools near Toledo, Ohio. He holds a Masters in Music Education from Bowling Green State University, Ohio. He has training in Dalcroze Eurhythmics and certification to teach Orff Schulwerk courses. Brian has presented workshops for the AOSA National Convention and at state music conferences across the east coast, and was a movement consultant for McGraw- Hill s Share the Music. Steven Calantropio has served as AOSA's first Education Director for the past 4 years. His career in public education spanned 31 years of teaching music and movement in the River Edge, N.J. public schools. He has served as clinician at numerous regional Orff Schulwerk chapters as well as the National Conference of the American Orff- Schulwerk Association and state music education conferences. Steven holds certificates in Orff, Kodaly, and Dalcroze from the Manhattan School of Music as well as a Certificate from the Orff Institute in Salzburg Austria. He has taught Orff Level III courses for over 25 years and has been a guest lecturer, levels teacher and conference presenter at Orff Schulwerk training programs in Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne and Hobart, Australia and at the Orff Institute. Steven was recently a guest Orff Schulwerk teacher in Seoul, Korea. Mr. Calantropio s innovative Master Class in Elemental Music has been presented numerous times in the United States and Canada. His recent book, Pieces and Processes is published by Schott Music Company. Steve has been a certified computer technician for Apple Computer and has taught courses in digital technology in a number of locations. Brian Crisp is the Music Atelierista and specialist at The College School, an independent school for students ages 3-14 in St. Louis, Missouri. His master certificate in Orff- Schulwerk is from the University of St. Thomas. He has worked in public and private schools in North Carolina and Kentucky as well as Minnesota. In addition to being the course director of Orff- Schulwerk Teacher Training at Webster University, Brian teaches the University of Kentucky Orff- Schulwerk course. Brian also has studied the Reggio Emilia approach in the Infant- Toddler Centers and Preschools of Reggio Emilia, Italy. Brian presents workshops and conference sessions throughout the United States, Europe and Australia. He recently published an article with his colleague, Dr. Louise Cadwell titled, Weaving the Theories: Orff- Schulwerk and the Reggio Approach. Brian is the educational consultant for MMB Music.
Valerie Durham has been teaching school since 1999. After teaching 1st through 4th grade, she was delighted to start teaching elementary school music. She enjoys teaching students in kindergarten through fifth grade at Oak Hill Elementary. She earned a Bachelors Degree in Music Education and Elementary Education in 1997 as well as a Masters Degree in Music Education in 2001 from Campbellsville University. She earned a Rank 1 certification in Educational Administration from Eastern Kentucky University in 2002. Valerie is currently the president of the Kentucky Orff Schulwerk Association, a statewide organization for music teachers. She also received levels 1 and 2 Orff Certification at the University of Kentucky. Jane Frazee is founder and former director of Graduate Programs in Music Education at the University of St. Thomas. Her 30 years of classroom music experience, in addition to her work with pre- service and in- service teachers nationwide, has received recognition from the state Minnesota Music Educators Association, the national American Orff- Schulwerk Association, and the International Orff- Schulwerk Foundation, from which she received their highest honor: the Pro Merito award. She has twice been named distinguished scholar/artist for the University of St. Thomas Music Education Seminar. Her biography appears in the forthcoming second edition of the Grove Dictionary of American Music. A former Fulbright teaching scholar at the Orff Institute in Austria, Frazee is the author of Discovering Keetman, a collection of teaching suggestions for Keetman's instrumental pieces; Playing Together, a sequential approach to Orff instrument technique; Orff Schulwerk Today, emphasizing the relationship of performance to understanding; and the first textbook for applied Orff Schulwerk in North America, Discovering Orff. Ana Lucía Frega has taught at all levels of the GENERAL and ARTISTIC education system in her own country of Argentina. She was the PRINCIPAL of the School of Performing Arts at the TEATRO COLON of Buenos Aires for ten years until1990. She has run in- service teachers training courses in all provinces in Argentina and over all Latin American countries. She has taught and lectured many times in France, Spain, Portugal, Canada, Greece, Australia and USA. 50 are the books she has published in her own country and abroad in the field of Music and Education, including All for Music, Music for All published in 1998 by the University of Pretoria, South Africa. Her Música para Maestros, a well- known treatise on teaching strategies in Spanish, is in its 5 th edition. Dr. Frega has been a Member of the Board of the ISME Research Commission, served as President of ISME 1994-2000, and on the Executive Board of the International Music Council - UNESCO, 1998 2004. Currently, she is teaching at the University CAECE, in Buenos Aires, where she is in charge of both the graduate and the postgraduate courses. Dr. Ana Lucia Frega was elected in 2000 as PERMANENT MEMBER of the Argentinien Academy of Education.
Lori Gooding, Ph.D., MT- BC, NICU- MT joined the University of Kentucky as the Director of Music Therapy in July 2010. Dr. Gooding s music therapy career includes both teaching and clinical practice. Previously, she served as Assistant Professor of Music Therapy at Charleston Southern University and as a Teaching Assistant at The Florida State University. Her clinical experience covers a wide range of populations including: children and adults in medical settings (pediatrics, oncology, skilled nursing, rehab and out- patient chemotherapy), children, adolescents and adults in psychiatric settings, older adults in skilled nursing and dementia care, children and adolescents in special education settings and private practice. In addition to her career as a music therapist, Dr. Gooding has also performed as a trombonist with the Augusta Symphony, with members of the Charleston Symphony, with the Charleston Stage, with Low Country Winds and with Tallahassee Winds. Dr. Gooding completed her PhD in Music Education/Music Therapy at The Florida State University in May of 2010. Her work has been published in several journals including the Journal of Music Therapy, Arts in Psychotherapy, the Journal of Poetry Therapy and General Music Today. She will also be published in an upcoming issue of Music Therapy Perspectives. Dr. Gooding currently serves as a fellow for the National Institute for Infant and Child Medical Music Therapy, as well as Chair of the Southeastern Region of the American Music Therapy Association (SER- AMTA) Conference Committee. Formerly, she served on the Board of Directors for local and regional organizations, including the SER- AMTA and the Music Therapy Association of South Carolina. June Grice is the Music Education Coordinator at Morehead State University. Prior to this position, Dr. Grice was the Music Education Coordinator at Colorado State University. She received her master's and doctorate degrees from The University of Iowa. Dr. Grice was the founder and the coordinator of the Kodaly Institute of Colorado at Colorado State University. She developed a new master's program in Music Education with Kodaly Emphasis at Colorado State University and looks forward to an expansion of the master's program at MSU. Before Colorado State University, Dr. Grice was the Head of Music Education at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana. She has presented workshops on music methods, been a clinician at state conferences in West Virginia and Colorado, and has presented her research at the Colorado state conferences and national OAKE conferences. She presented her research on Kodaly programs in the United States at the International Kodaly Symposium in Britain in August, 2005. Dr. Grice was very involved in CMEA (Colorado Music Educators Association) as a board member, clinician, and Chair of the College/University Music Council (CUMC). Dr. Grice received her 25- Year Service Award at CMEA in 2004 and has taught at the elementary, junior high, high school, and University levels. Currently, Dr. Grice is active as a clinician and member of KMEA (Kentucky Music Educators Association) and looks forward to a continued working relationship with music educators in Kentucky.
K. H. Han (Kuo-Huang Han), Ph. D. (Northwestern University), is Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus, School of Music, Northern Illinois University and now visiting fellow, Asia Center and visiting professor at the School of Music, University of Kentucky. He has been teaching world music, Chinese and Southeast Asian musical instruments over thirty years. He has performed Asian music with students and given workshops in many colleges and scholarly conferences. He is a member of the Society for Ethnomusicology, Asian Music, Music Educators National Conference, Association for Chinese Music Research and served as chair or adviser to some of them. As an author, he has contributed articles in Ethnomusicology, Asian Music, New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (2 nd edition), Garland Encyclopedia of World Music (Far Eastern volume), Encyclopedia Britannica, Routledge Encyclopedia of Contemporary China, Association for Chinese Music Research Reports, Multicultural Perspectives in Music Education (ed. by William Anderson & Patricia Campbell; MENC), Musics in Many Cultures (ed. by Elizabeth May; University of California) and has published 12 books in Chinese. Cindy Hall teaches Orff certification courses at the University of St. Thomas and the University of Kentucky. She is an active conference and workshop clinician. She has taught music to children in public and private schools, directed an after school arts program, and conducted church children's choirs. She served as a contributing writer of recorder materials for the Macmillan/McGraw- Hill series, Share the Music. Cindy holds a B.A. in music from Duke University, M.A. in music education from the University of Oklahoma, and Orff Certification from Memphis State University and Hamline University. She currently teaches first through fifth grade music and chorus at Rowland Hall- St. Mark's school in Salt Lake City. Jo Ella Hug teaches in a large Middle School in Missoula, Montana. Although her current specialty is using Orff Schulwerk in grades 6, 7 & 8, she has taught all ages of learners. In the summer, she teaches Orff Schulwerk Teacher Education at various Universities including the program at the University of St Thomas in St. Paul, MN. Jo Ella has been published numerous times with articles in The Orff Echo and Reverberations as well as the Ostinato (Carl Orff Canada) and Orff-Schulwerk Informationen (Orff- Schulwerk Forum Salzburg). She has been included 4 times in the annual publication of Who s Who Among America s Teachers. She frequently presents workshops around the USA and Canada as well as AOSA National Conference Sessions. Jo Ella has been a headliner at the National Conference of Carl Orff Canada in 2000 and 2010; has presented for MENC All- Northwest and the MENC 2008 National Conference. She is the immediate Past President of AOSA and currently chairs the AOSA Post Level III Subcommittee and co- chairs the North American Alliance Subcommittee of AOSA and Carl Orff Canada. Nancy Miller With degrees in music and dance, Nancy began 10 years of teaching dance at The University of Wisconsin, where she danced in an improvisation group introducing her to approaches similar to Orff- Schulwerk. Four years teaching music and dance in Venezuela in private schools and the Ministry of Culture opened her eyes to the universality of how people
learn. After moving to St. Louis in 1977, she was formally introduced to Orff, the approach that guided all her work to come. Taking Levels with Judy Bond, Arvida Steen, Jane Frazee, Jos Wuytak and Mary Goetze and later becoming their teaching colleagues at the Uni. of Illinois, Hamline Uni., Uni. of St. Thomas, and the Uni. of Kentucky was the best education she could have had. She ended 25 years of Levels teaching at Webster University and Illinois State University. During those years, she was the performing arts teacher at The College School and an author for Share the Music and Spotlight on Music. Mary Shamrock is Professor Emeritus of California State University, Northridge, past President of AOSA, and researcher of Orff Schulwerk programs in Asia. She is a strong proponent of integrating world music and education. Dr. Shamrock is a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award of the American Orff- Schulwerk Association. She has been an instructor for Orff teacher- training courses throughout the US and in many other countries. Currently Dr. Shamrock continues to promote world music through her work in the community and arts associations in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is the author of the book titled Orff Schulwerk: Brief history, description, and issues in international dispersal, and other Publications. Arvida Steen was the first director of the Orff Teacher Certification Course at the University of Kentucky, beginning with Level in 1986. She continued as director and instructor in each level for ten years. She later taught Orff Curriculum and Master Classes at UK. She began her Orff Teacher Training career at the University of Minnesota in 1974 and continued with that program until 2007 at the University of St. Thomas. There she developed the course in Curriculum Development and guided teaching practice using videotaping of classroom work. Arvida taught at the Blake Schools, using a K- 5 Orff Schulwerk curriculum as the complimentary part of her career, 1972-2000. She holds AOSA's Distinguished Service Award, and was elected to the Minnesota Music Educators' Hall of Fame. Exploring Orff, A Teachers Guide, Schott, 1992 reflected her combined interests in children, teaching Orff Schulwerk, pedagogy and curriculum. She was a President of AOSA. Cecilia Wang is the director of the Orff Schulwerk Program at the University of Kentucky, and professor of Music Education at University of Kentucky. She teaches courses in general music education, research, arts in education, psychology of music, tests and measurements and directs theses and dissertations in these areas. She obtained her BME from Viterbo University, and MME and PHD in Fine Arts from Texas Tech University. She presents research papers and publishes regularly and internationally. Her research interests include music perception, music learning and development, creative thinking in music, and teacher effectiveness. She has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Research in Music Education, and several other research journals. She was one- time chair of the Research Interest Group of AOSA, and the AOSA Research Advisory Panel for several years.
