Lim. ed. of 500 copies, of which this is No. 302, signed Stephen Walters. Fine in orig. slip case. NOTE: William Bligh is still a misunderstood man. He is generally regarded as a stern disciplinarian, hot tempered and harsh and to blame for the mutiny of the Bounty and his arrest when Governor of N.S.W. Investigation into both upheld the principle that the law must be obeyed. He had an extraordinary life. Born in Plymouth in 1754, he was descended from an old Cornwall family. He sailed with Cook on his last voyage, master of the Resolution. He was sent to Tahiti to bring the bread fruit to the West Indies but was cast adrift by the mutineers in a 23 boat and by skilful seamanship, navigated 3618 miles to Timor in 6 weeks, charting part of the N E coast of New Holland (Australia). This remarkable voyage is the subject of this book. In 1795, he was at the Battle of Camperdown and in 1801, with Nelson at Copenhagen. In the same year, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, through the influence of Sir Joseph Banks, who also obtained for him the post of Governor of N.S.W.
