2 THE COMPOSER Gary Gazlay gre up in Pinellas County, lorida and began studying piano at the age o ive. He attended Madeira Beach Junior High School and Seminole High School and because o the positive inluence o his unior high and high school band directors, he chose a career as a music teacher. In 1970, he on the lorida Bandmasters Association s 1970 Henry illmore Composition Aard. Mr. Gazlay attended the University o South lorida and studied rench horn ith Ward ern and Douglas Hill. Ater graduating rom college in 197, he moved to Madison, lorida and began his teaching career in the Madison County lorida Public School System. In 1979 the Madison High School Band as selected and perormed at the Macy s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Gazlay has taught music in Madison County or the past 36 years at the adult, high school, middle school and elementary levels. He currently teaches instrumental and general music at Madison County Central School, and is also a music coordinator at a local church in his community. Mr. Gazlay is a member o ASCAP, MENC, lorida Bandmasters Association, lorida Music Educators Association, The National Band Association, National Association o Composers, The Christian elloship o Art Music Composers, and Pi Mu Alpha Sinonia. THE COMPOSITION The title o Exhortation is taken rom the ord exhort, hich means giving o earnest advice or encouragement, and as inspired by I Thessalonians 5:11. It as composed or the band members o the Madison County Central School, 2008-2009. Exhortation is dedicated to my colleague and riend Chuck Perego, ho recently retired rom Augusta Raa Middle School located in Tallahassee, lorida. Chuck is an outstanding teacher and or 35 years I have valued his advice and encouragement. It is my hope that Exhortation ill provide students ith a song that they ill enoy learning to play and provide other music educators ith a teaching tool that can be used in helping to motivate and encourage their students.
