SDCRS NEWSLETTER Next meeting: June 18, 2016 www.sandiegocountyrecordersociety.org The San Diego County Recorder Society (SDCRS) is a chapter of the national American Recorder Society, and has been in existence since 1972. A non-profit membership organization, the SDCRS promotes and supports recreational playing and public performance of recorders and other early music instruments through monthly play sessions, recorder instruction, workshops and pro-bono public concerts. The leadership of the SDCRS is in the form of an SDCRS Executive Committee, currently consisting of Harvey Winokur, Vanessa Evans, Hugh Wade, Susan Neumeyer, and Maggie Fowlie. The intention of the Executive Committee is to have the SDCRS operate in much the same manner as in the past. We will continue to have regular monthly meetings, guest conductors, refreshments at regular meetings and free recorder instruction when there is sufficient interest. We have scheduled a SDCRS workshop on October 22, 2016 (keep that date open). If any SDCRS member wishes to become a member of the SDCRS Executive Committee or suggest changes in the way the SDCRS operates, please contact one of the current SDCRS Executive Committee members whose contact information is given in this newsletter. All inputs are welcome. FINAL MEETNG OF THE SDCRS 2015-16 SEASON It s that time of year again. The final SDCRS 2015-16 season meeting will be a combined playing/potluck session on Saturday June 18 at the beautiful coastal view home of Ellen and Frank Quick, 1150 Barcelona Drive, San Diego, CA 92107. The meeting will start with a playing session at 2:00PM (duration TBD), followed by the potluck dining activity. Persons intending to attend this meeting are urged to contact Ellen Quick (619-226-8178 or ellenkquick@gmail.com ) to coordinate what type of food/drink you will be bringing to the meeting. This meeting will be very informal; bring sufficient copies of music you would like to play and your own music stand. You may conduct the music yourself, or Hugh Wade will conduct/play it with you. A photo montage of the SDCRS 2010 playing/potluck session is on the next page. The players look very intent for the most part, but the main purpose of this meeting is for recorder players to have fun, play new music, and get to know other recorder players. Attendees might even pick up a few tips to improve their recorder playing. Persons attending this session are urged to use MapQuest and/or GPS to find the best route to the Quick s home. MAINTAINING RECORDER PLAYING SKILLS OVER THE SDCRS JULY/AUGUST BREAK Since there are no formal organized SDCRS meetings in July and August (next regular SDCRS meeting is scheduled for September 17), recorder players are urged to maintain their skills by playing in informal ensembles during the summer break. It s boring to play by yourself. The SDCRS does not have a list of existing ensembles that might accommodate additional players; however, a roster of SDCRS members as of 2015-16 can be provided to anyone interested in contacting any of these members about the possibility of playing with them. Contact Hugh Wade (SDCRS Newsletter Editor) about receiving a current SDCRS roster. On this subject, a current SDCRS member, Ilene Benkle, is looking for a group to play with, and has asked that anyone who knows of a person, or persons, she could play with to contact her (760-415-1233, isteino1@yahoo.com).

NOTES FROM THE NEWSLETTER EDITOR SDCRS members are entitled to receive the SDCRS Newsletter either by E-mail or snail-mail (at extra cost). If you are an SDCRS member and have not already done so, please let the Newsletter Editor know (858-270-6953 or hughdwade@earthlink.net) your current E-mail address and/or snail-mail address. If any of you who receive this newsletter have any information that you believe would be of interest to the SDCRS or San Diego early music enthusiasts in general (such as music workshops, concerts, lectures, etc.), please provide the information to the SDCRS Newsletter Editor and it will be considered for inclusion in the SDCRS Newsletter. The newsletter is typically published about one week prior to a SDCRS regular meeting. SDCRS 2016-17 MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL REMINDER INCLUDED IN THIS NEWSLETTER IS A 2016-17 SDCRS MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION FORM. Current SDCRS memberships are valid from Sept. 2015 through June 2016. If you haven t already done so, please complete the application form with payment and return it to Harvey Winokur, SDCRS Executive Committee Member, either by mail or in person (see contact information below). Don t miss this incredible bargain: nine regular monthly recorder ensemble sessions with an outstanding conductor, an annual potluck playing/eating session, a discount on the SDCRS annual workshop, a monthly newsletter, and the company of good people. PLEASE REMIT YOUR SDCRS 2016-17 DUES AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. REFRESHMENTS AT SDCRS MEETINGS Regular SDCRS meetings usually include snacks/drinks for attendees to enjoy during the break in playing. Many thanks to the SDCRS members who volunteered and provided refreshments at meetings over the past SDCRS 2015-16 season. For the SDCRS 2016-17 season our refreshment coordinators are Joan Cudhea and Maggie Fowlie. The SDCRS thanks them for volunteering for this position. If you are interested in providing refreshments for one of our meetings, please contact either Joan or Maggie (see contact information below) to schedule the meeting for which you will provide refreshments (light snacks, fruit, cookies, drinks etc.). We generally plan refreshments for about 15 people. The SDCRS will reimburse a refreshments provider for any incurred costs of refreshments. SDEMS MONTHLY MUSIC MAKERS The San Diego Early Music Society (SDEMS) meets at the La Jolla Public Library on the first Sunday of each month from 1:00P-5:00P. Additional information about Courtly Noyse consort activities can be found on the Courtly Noyse website http://www.courtlynoyse.com. KENSINGTON BAROQUE ORCHESTRA CONCERTS The Kensington Baroque Orchestra (KBO) is a San Diego-based community ensemble of professional and amateur musicians focusing on historically informed performance of Baroque music. Past performance videos of the KBO can be found on UTube. Upcoming (KBO) performances (free to the public) will be announced in this newsletter as they become known.
