Veneto Opera Summer School & Arte Lirica Festival 2019 for singers, pianists and instrumentalists 11-25 AUGUST 2019 BASSANO DEL GRAPPA AND ASOLO, ITALY ONE AND TWO-WEEK PROGRAMMES AVAILABLE An enriching programme of Italian repertoire coaching and performances of staged opera scenes from La bohème, Don Giovanni and Il ritorno d Ulisse in patria. Building on the success of our previous summer programmes, applications are invited from singers, pianists and instrumentalists for our 2019 Veneto Opera Summer School and first edition of Arte Lirica Festival in Asolo. In 2019, the summer school will provide an intensive programme of study focusing on diction, expression and performance skills, in preparation for a range of public performances as part of Arte Lirica Festival 2019 - including staged scenes at Asolo s royal opera house, Teatro Eleonora Duse. One of the most amazing, insightful and enjoyable Italian courses out there! APRIL, SOPRANO

The programme for singers In 2019, we are offering a two-week programme for principal roles (11 25 August), and the option of a two-week programme (11 25 August) or one-week programme (18 25 August) for chorus participants. Principal roles We invite applications from advanced and professional singers for the below principal roles, which will be allocated on a first come, first served basis to suitably experienced applicants. Please note that if you would like to apply for these roles, you must be available to attend the full two-week programme from 11 to 25 August 2019: La bohème, Puccini excerpts from Acts 1 and 2 Rodolfo, Marcello, Schaunard, Colline, Musetta, Mimì This week has transformed not only my use of Italian, but my awareness of language in singing more generally JOHANNA, SOPRANO Don Giovanni, Mozart full Act 1 Finale Don Ottavio, Don Giovanni, Leporello, Masetto, Donna Elvira, Donna Anna, Zerlina Il ritorno d Ulisse in patria, Monteverdi excerpts from Act 2 Ulisse (tenor), Anfinomo (tenor), Antinoo (baritone), Penelope (mezzo), Pisandro (mezzo or countertenor). Participants in these lead roles may also have the opportunity to perform additional repertoire by Malipiero in the lecture recital on 20 August. Principals will also perform in a recital in Bassano. Chorus members We invite applications from singers of all levels to join our chorus. You can choose to attend either the full two-week programme from 11 to 25 August, or the one-week programme, from 18 to 25 August. As a chorus member, you will be allocated chorus repertoire in the three opera scenes, and if you attend our two-week programme, you will also sing a solo or ensemble piece in one of our recitals in Bassano. Subject to audition, some chorus members may also be offered the opportunity to cover principal roles. For all singers, the programme includes: Coaching masterclasses led by Melofonetica Founder, Dr. Matteo Dalle Fratte, where you will benefit from one-to-one coaching to improve your diction, musicality and expression in Italian repertoire. Fascinating short lectures on The Melofonetica Method, our highly effective phonetics-based approach to sung Italian, sharing what you need to know about the Italian language in order to sing it well in a performance space. Tailored one-to-one music coaching with our experienced coaches, giving you time and space to focus on the areas that you find most challenging. Practical tools and guidance that you can take away and apply to all your other Italian repertoire. The opportunity to bring an additional piece of Italian repertoire to be coached on alongside your Festival repertoire, if you are joining the two-week programme. A range of exciting Festival performances - see page 4 for further details. Incredible mentoring and guidance LILY, SOPRANO The Melofonetica Method is a trademark 2

The programme for pianists We welcome pianists who would like to develop their operatic accompaniment experience and/or skills as a répétiteur to join the full two-week programme, 11 25 August. Pianists will attend lectures and be paired with singers for coaching sessions, to experience how the Melofonetica Method improves the singer-accompanist relationship. The programme will include plenty of opportunities to accompany singers in a wide range of Italian repertoire, and play during rehearsals, in addition to performances in most of the Festival events and in a recital in Bassano. Right from the first day I felt like I understood the Italian language far better and how to better help and guide singers EMILY, PIANIST Pianists will also benefit from tailored sessions on: How to apply the Melofonetica Method to Italian repertoire to better prepare the score as a coach and work more effectively with singers Orchestral playing as a pianist Understanding and following the conductor The programme for instrumentalists We invite instrumentalists who would like to develop experience in playing for opera to join the one-week programme, from 18 to 25 August (we may also be able to accommodate instrumentalists on the full twoweek programme, 11 25 August, please let us know if you are interested in this). As well as playing for rehearsals, instrumentalists will perform in most of the Festival events, including the staged scenes. Instrumentalists will also benefit from: Tailored chamber music coaching sessions, led by our music coaches The opportunity to attend lectures and coaching masterclasses, to learn how the Melofonetica Method helps orchestras and conductors to better understand Italian repertoire and accompany singers more effectively We welcome applications from both individual musicians and existing ensemble groups, e.g., string quartet, wind quartet, piano trio, woodwind quintet. For group bookings from existing ensembles, we offer a 10% discount on fees for each member of the ensemble (this discount also applies to early bird fees, which are available until 31 December 2018). 3

About Asolo Asolo is a hilltop jewel, known as The pearl of the province of Treviso, and The city of a hundred horizons for its iconic setting. A historic town in Veneto, Asolo is also renowned for its artistic, cultural and royal connections. Queen Caterina Cornaro, the last monarch of the Kingdom of Cyprus, was made Lady of Asolo in 1489 and reigned from the hilltop castle that now houses the Teatro Eleonora Duse. From that era, Asolo gained a reputation as a centre of literary and artistic distinction. More recently, famous residents have included the English poet Robert Browning, the actress Eleonora Duse, the explorer Freya Stark, the violinist Wilma Neruda and the composer Gian Francesco Malipiero. As an attractive tourist destination with a wealth of artistic and cultural heritage, Asolo provides the ideal setting for Arte Lirica Festival. About Bassano del Grappa and our venue Bassano del Grappa is a beautiful, historic town in the Veneto region of Italy and takes its name from the nearby Monte Grappa. The historic centre of Bassano is pretty and compact with many bars, pizzerie, restaurants, ice-cream shops and boutiques. The town is well known for its Ponte Vecchio wooden bridge over the Brenta river, designed by architect Andrea Palladio in 1569, the local grappa liqueur and locally-produced ceramics. Bassano is also within 40 minutes of the picturesque Prosecco Valley area. For those attending our two-week programme, it will be possible to take a day trip to the prosecco vineyards and more info will be provided. Accommodation and tuition is provided at the peaceful Scalabrini Institute, located just a 5 10 minute scenic riverside walk from Bassano s town centre.
