Joyful Noises LLC Twin Cities Music Therapy Services LLC AMTA National Roster Internship Site Minneapolis, Minnesota Fact Sheet Dear Potential Intern, Thank you for your interest in our music therapy internship site. We believe that our combination of two private practice settings with Joyful Noises LLC and Twin Cities Music Therapy Services LLC offers a unique opportunity to observe and work with a variety of clients using diverse methods in a supportive and collaborative environment. Jennifer Hicks, MT-BC, E-RYT is our Internship Director and the owner of Joyful Noises LLC. Her mission is to utilize music therapy and mindfulness principles to inspire and empower others to experience and create joy in their lives, regardless of circumstances, age, or ability level. Jennifer provides group music therapy sessions at NuWay Counseling Centers in Northeast and Downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul for adults with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. She also contracts to provide combination music therapy and movement sessions for North Memorial Health Care s Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient Programs, with clients in their 20s through their 60s, many of whom are recovering from abuse or trauma. Overall, Jennifer s clients represent diverse backgrounds, cultures, and lifestyles, and interns will have the opportunity to work as part of a wide interdisciplinary team, consisting of counselors, social workers, nurses, and doctors as well as interns and practicum students from music therapy and other disciplines. In addition, Jennifer frequently presents on a variety of topics for conferences, inservices, and team building workshops. Interns will have the opportunity to assist with these proposals, contracts, and presentations as appropriate. Lindsay Markworth, MMT, MT-BC is a Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapist and our Primary Supervising Music Therapist. She is also the owner of Twin Cities Music Therapy Services LLC. She and her staff music therapists are dedicated to providing the highest quality services using music to promote health through empowering children and adults of all abilities to become actively invested in their process of growth. Music therapy sessions are music-centered and creatively facilitated through individualized, evidence-based treatment. They provide music therapy services to people of all ages and abilities, promoting goal directed development. clients homes. In addition, Lindsay teaches Music Therapy Methods and Clinical Improvisation courses at Augsburg University. It is our privilege to welcome both Mike LimBybliw and Alicia Little as Supervising Music Therapists for our site as well. Mike LimBybliw (pronounced LIM-BIB-LOO) became a board certified music therapist in 2010 after receiving a bachelor s degree in music therapy from the University of Minnesota. Mike has served a wide variety of populations since becoming a music therapist and most of his work focuses on rhythm as a transformational tool. Since 2012, Mike has been a frequent presenter at state, regional, and national conferences on multicultural percussion, guitar, and clinical groove concepts. Alicia Little is a board-certified music therapist and received her Bachelor s degree in music therapy from the University of Minnesota. She has experience working with various populations including children, adolescents, and adults with physical and developmental disabilities; individuals with autism spectrum disorder; pediatric medical patients and their parents; older adults with dementia; people with Huntington s disease; and children and adults with various mental health diagnoses. Alicia is passionate about serving under resourced communities, and we are excited about the unique learning opportunities that both Mike and Alicia will provide for our interns! Warmly, Jennifer Hicks, MT-BC, E-RYT Internship Director Lindsay Markworth, MMT, MT-BC Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapist Primary Supervising Music Therapist Mike LimBybliw, MT-BC Supervising Music Therapist Alicia Little, MT-BC Supervising Music Therapist Internship Site Details This internship is located in the vibrant Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, with contracts extending into the suburbs, including Edina and Robbinsdale. Interns are expected to provide their own housing, meals, and transportation, as part of the private practice experience is commuting between contract sites. This ten-month internship is designed to allow interns scheduled days

off in order to work part-time as needed. We are unable to offer a stipend or insurance coverage at this time. Interns will be expected to provide proof of professional liability insurance along with proof of car insurance. The equipment and supplies available vary depending on the contract site. Interns will need to bring their own guitar and keep it well tuned. Hand drums and auxiliary percussion are available at every site. Office space with storage and a keyboard is available at the Twin Cities Music Therapy studio in the Center for Performing Arts. Interns will be able to reserve time to practice and work in that space. They will be provided with a Joyful Noises Songbook in a binder and/or as a scanned document as well as any recorded music required. Interns will need to bring their own laptop. Interns will share Twin Cities Music Therapy Services documents with the Supervising Music Therapist(s) via Unitus-TI (a cloud-based documentation system). Once we have received your completed application, we will contact you to schedule an in person interview. Entrance requirements include functional proficiency on piano, voice and guitar and a willingness to experiment and grow in these areas. For the interview, please be prepared to demonstrate your functional music skills on piano, voice and guitar in the following areas: Piano/Voice o Play and sing a song that could be used with a preschool-aged client. o Play and sing a song that could be used with a 10 year old client with autism.

o Improvise with us in a pentatonic scale. o Sight-read a simple song accompaniment utilizing basic chords (including I, IV and V7) in the key of C, D or G. Guitar/Voice o Play and sing a song that could be used with a group of adults (aged 20-60). o Sight-read a simple song accompaniment utilizing basic chords (including I, IV and V7) in the key of C, D or G. Entrance requirements will be evaluated based upon the intern s ability to sing in tune with a pleasing quality and adequate volume, play basic chord patterns and accompany proficiently on piano and guitar, sight-read simple song accompaniments and improvise on pitched instruments (American Music Therapy Association Professional Competencies 4.1 and 4.3). Interns will also be evaluated based on their openness to building upon and exploring beyond their current musical abilities. Interns must pass a background check (completed and paid for by NuWay Counseling Centers and Twin Cities Music Therapy Services, LLC), turn in their letter of verification from the MT Advisor to the Internship Director and sign their internship agreement (along with their MT Advisor and the Internship Director) prior to starting this internship program. We are unable to offer a stipend or insurance coverage at this time. Interns will be expected to provide proof of professional liability insurance along with proof of car insurance. Internship Schedule Please contact us to request a current internship schedule. This is designed as a part-time tenmonth internship program; however, a full time six-month internship schedule is an option as well. Interns will start in the fall (generally September 1 st ) and be expected to complete their required hours by the end of June. Please remember that prospective music therapists must complete 1200 total clinical hours, including all practicum and internship experiences. Additional time may be added if agreed upon between the intern and Internship Director. Intern days and hours will be determined by the intern, Internship Director, and Supervising Music Therapist(s), depending upon the needs of the individual intern. Interns will complete a minimum of 25-30 hours each week, including 10-15 client contact hours in large group, small group, and individual settings. Supervision will be completed with both the Internship Director and Primary Supervising Music Therapist, separately with each for 1 hour on a weekly basis and together with both for 1 hour on a monthly basis. Internship Assignments Please contact us to view the current schedule of internship assignments. All assignments should be

submitted in a timely manner via Google Drive. Assignments are designed to help interns identify and expand upon both their academic and musical interests. Training Expectations & Opportunities Interns will need to have a flu shot and provide information for a background check (full name, address, phone number, social security number, driver s license number, and date of birth) and complete the required orientation procedures at North Memorial Health Care and NuWay Counseling Centers. Twin Cities Music Therapy Services and NuWay Counseling Centers will pay for the background checks. Most flu shots are covered by insurance. Please contact the Internship Director if your insurance company will not cover this cost. Through their work with Joyful Noises, interns will learn the fundamental principles of adaptive yoga and how they can be applied in music therapy sessions and for their own self care. Through their work with Twin Cities Music Therapy Services, interns will be offered intensive training in improvisation. Weekly and monthly supervision will include an emphasis on these skills, and monthly musical assignments will include both an improvised and a pre-composed component. Towards the end of their internship, interns may also have the opportunity to practice supervision skills as appropriate with music therapy practicum students, as guided and approved by the Internship Director and Supervising Music Therapist(s). Working with two music therapy business owners will give interns the opportunity to learn about and participate in the management of a private practice. They will observe and may participate in the acquiring and negotiating of contracts, marketing (including but not limited to email services and social media platforms), invoicing/billing, and the scheduling and coordinating of independent music therapy contractors. Interns are strongly encouraged to join the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA). They are also encouraged to join the Music Therapy Association of Minnesota (MTAM) and attend their workshops offered in the fall and spring, along with AMTA s regional and national conferences (interns may apply for scholarships offered through MTAM for these events). Additional Details Interns will be off on the following holidays: Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year s Day, Memorial Day, and the Fourth of July. Requests for additional time off may be given to the Internship Director and approved on an individual basis. If they are sick, interns will be expected to contact their supervisor for that session a minimum of two hours prior to their expected start time.

Interns are expected to dress professionally. Footwear should be selected to provide proper safety (no flip flops). Interns will be issued a photo ID badge for North Memorial Health Care and for NuWay Counseling Centers. These should be worn at all times when at those facilities. Interns will be issued a key to the Twin Cities Music Therapy Services studio space on their first day.
