Guide to Network Video Applications AXIS 2120

About this brochure This brochure contains several real world examples showing how Axis network video products are currently being implemented around the world for remote monitoring, remote meeting, broadcasting, remote guidance and much more. Network video is a rapidly developing field, to which creative customers are continually bringing new application ideas. Here are just a handful of the thousands of applications developed so far. Use your existing IP network Axis network video applications are an excellent way of adding to the uses of your IP network without adding to your costs. They employ the same infrastructure for image and video transmission as the majority of companies currently use for word and data processing. So if you already have a network and cabling up and running, the cabling cost for accommodating a networked video product is negligible. What s more you can use existing computers for storage and remote viewing. World leader Axis is the world market leader in networked video products. Our engineers know the importance of reliable products that are easy to install and integrate with your existing network. We have been developing solutions that add value to your network since 1984 and specifically, network video solutions since 1996. With more than 200.000 professional installations of video products, we have the experience to provide the right video solution for your network. So if you want to be on the cutting edge of video technology, Axis is the obvious supplier to choose.

IDC Remote monitoring of offices Remote monitoring provides a cost-effective and simple way of keeping an eye on sensitive areas over the local network or the Internet. It is achieved by hooking up network cameras to the existing IP-network so that real-time video is accessible from any of the network s computers. Solution chosen by French Bank The French banking group, Caisse d Épargne, needed a cost effective way to extend surveillance monitoring into their 70 regional branch offices. The bank s high demands for security, reliability, and quality led them to an Axis solution. In each regional bank, up to three Axis network cameras were installed directly to the existing networks, enabling the bank s headquarters to access surveillance images over a secure network. 180 Axis network cameras make it possible to capture detailed photographic evidence of any criminal activity from over 70 regional banks. A cost analysis of alternative surveillance systems revealed that an Axis-based network solution cost nearly 5 times less than any comparative CCTV solution. Meanwhile, employees no longer need to take responsibility for changing and storing magnetic tapes. And last but by no means least, staff and customers can enjoy the reassurance this modern technology provides. We are extremely pleased with the results. This is really just the start of our strategic migration from analog CCTV to IP-based technology. MR.GUY KLEIBER, CHIEF TECHNICAL & INFORMATION OFFICER, CAISSE D ÉPARGNE BANK Benefits in brief: Lower cost: Axis s solution cost 4 5 times less than an analog surveillance system. The bank can use its existing network infrastructure to deploy the cameras, shortening implementation time and lowering start up costs Simplified administration: Security personnel can survey any of the offices remotely and view the images at their PC, wherever they work. No video tapes are needed and employees do not have to invest time in checking and handling them Safer for bank customers and employees: Employees feel safer with the cameras observing the premises. Bank personnel have peace of mind and can get on with their jobs Future upgrade path: Easy transition from analog CCTV to digital IP-based surveillance technology How it all fits together: Remote monitoring application for security purposes Bridging analog and digital surveillance technology, an Axis video server connects analog CCTV cameras to an IP network. Axis network cameras can be used to complement the existing CCTV infrastructure and extend remote monitoring access to a broader audience over the Internet. Digital video can be enhanced by a professional PC surveillance application with surveillance footage stored directly to the hard disk of any PC over the network. A NAT router provides the security firewall via an xdsl modem.

Any period of downtime is both costly and inconvenient. Using Axis network cameras for remote monitoring is a simple and cost-effective way to protect valuable IT equipment over the Internet. The application automatically sends you an e-mail with attached images of anybody entering your server room. Solution chosen by U.S. Healthcare company Thanks to Axis network cameras equipped with motion detection and event-triggered alarm functions, the U.S. healthcare company, Baylor can safeguard its patient records, test results and other electronically stored and shared medical information. One of the largest integrated health care systems in the U.S., Baylor operates teaching hospitals, clinics, labs, and other medical facilities across the Dallas/Fort Worth district. Its 100 different locations house extensive network equipment, representing a significant financial investment. More importantly, that equipment performs the vital function of linking the various locations and transmitting medical information 24 hours a day. To ensure the security and reliability of their network and keep critical medical information safe, Baylor s IT team had Axis cameras installed in all network closets. The cameras are equipped with motion detection and event-triggered alarm functions. The closets are also monitored for any environmental changes (such as temperature) and can be inspected remotely for maintenance purposes. The Axis solution is a great example of the use of cost- effective technology to improve processes, operational effectiveness and quality. Benefits in brief: MARK JOHNSON, VICE PRESIDENT INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY BAYLOR HEALTH CARE SYSTEM Security: If the door to an equipment closet is opened, a motion detection device activates the camera, which immediately runs 24 frames worth of video. The images are automatically e-mailed to both the manager of network operations and the network director Change Control: Equipment and environment are continuously observed in real-time for any performance-threatening changes. E-mails are automatically sent to the network management team video server modem Telephone company Quality control: Using Axis network cameras, equipment inspections can be performed remotely and in real-time. The cameras tilt and zoom capability, means the viewer can get a close look at any detail sensor modem modem analog cameras PC PC How it all fits together: office home Remote monitoring application Connecting directly to the network, Axis network cameras offer remote monitoring access from any PC over the company Intranet, or the Internet. The resulting digital video streams can be stored directly to the hard disk on any PC or storage server.

TALK / DATA TALK RS CS TR RD TD CD What features have you got on your Web site that will encourage people to visit it, time and time again? Whether you want to attract viewers to your Web site to read about your company and its products, or are looking to tap into the potential earnings from banner advertising, you need to offer viewers something irresistible. One proven way of capturing and keeping the audience s attention is to show exciting live images. Broadcasting Solution chosen by Kodak Thanks to the broadcasting solution based on an Axis network video product, Kodak s Web site features the ongoing imagery of peregrine falcons nesting. Although it may seem like an unlikely place of interest for peregrine falcons, the Kodak Tower in downtown Rochester, NY has become just that. Several video cameras, supported by a high speed AXIS 2400 Video Server, have been placed strategically around a nesting box on top of Kodak s headquarters, enabling bird watchers from all over the world to view images of the bird s activities at www.kodak.com. A video server was required to handle the multiple high speed video streams, digitize the images and transmit still JPEG images over a LAN for posting to the Kodak Web site. The solution chosen was an AXIS 2400 Video Server, which could be mounted out of the way of the nesting box. The video server is specially designed to capture, digitize and transmit video images over LAN to a Web server. Birdcam generates some of the heaviest traffic on Kodak s Web site. The AXIS 2400 Video Server gave us just what we needed with four high speed video inputs and an Ethernet output for digitized images. It was very easy to generate the FTP scripts that direct the cameras to capture snapshots once per minute and send them to the Kodak.com server. Benefits in brief BRAD CARNEY, IT CONSULTANT TO EXECUTIVE OFFICES OF KODAK Remote location: Since the AXIS 2400 Video Server is networked based, the images can be viewed from any PC, anywhere No computer needed: The unit does not need a separate computer and operating system. All the application needs to run is built into the product including capture of the video image, digitalization, compression and transmission host computer FTP server Easy customization: The AXIS 2400 Video Server gives four video inputs and an Ethernet output for digitized images. The captured images are automatically uploaded to the Kodak server at regular time intervals, using FTP. AXIS 2400 video server modem Internet How it all fits together: analog cameras PC PC Typical components of a broadcasting application Axis network cameras connect directly to the local area network. The network cameras are configured to upload image streams to a dedicated FTP server on the network, to which client Internet traffic is subsequently directed.

Remote guidance and remote meetings Axis network cameras make it easy to connect people separated by distance. Since the technology delivers live high-quality images with audio, it makes all kinds of remote communication feasible. Two especially successful applications have been remote guidance participation and remote meeting over the Web. These days, companies are so dependent on technology, that when a piece of equipment breaks down, entire operations can come to a standstill. Problems need to be solved quickly. Remote guidance using Axis network cameras can speed up repair times and reduce system downtimes dramatically. With an Axis network camera, you can access a live video stream direct to the system site using a standard Web browser. You can see what the problem is, help with the fault diagnosis, and advise local staff how to proceed all without leaving your desk. It takes time and money to fly people around to branch offices for meetings. Yet, there is no real substitute for seeing and hearing one another face-to-face. Or is there? Thanks to Axis network cameras, it is now possible to participate in meetings remotely over your corporate Intranet. You can see and hear what is going on, and participate in a discussion just as you would do if you were physically present. The result is a greater sense of personal involvement in important meetings without the need to travel. Benefits in brief: Benefits in brief: Instead of flying a service engineer out to deal with a malfunction, have a specialist give advice while watching and guiding remotely Save money and time whilst keeping the personal touch by attending local branch office meetings remotely See and hear how machines are running at customer sites. You can immediately notice if a machine is making an unusual sound, and observe the fault with your own eyes Have a dialog with local staff in real-time in front of the malfunctioning equipment Improve communication between remote offices and business partners Assist customers faster and more accurately by improving communication between help desk staff and back office specialists Support your trouble-shooters while they are out on the road Axis network came AXIS 2191 Audio Module How it all fits together: Internet/ intranet Remote Guidance/Remote Meeting applications An AXIS 2191 Audio Module connects to the serial port of an Axis network camera to create a live audio-visual link for remote guidance and remote meeting applications. Enabling several people at different locations to communicate simultaneously, this solution delivers live video with full-duplex audio directly into an Internet Explorer Web browser with no other client software needed.
