2012 Best Film - Toronto Film Critics The Angela Baldassarre Award for Best Film, established in honour of the late Toronto film critic, was awarded by members of the Toronto Film Critics Association. Italy s official entry in the Best Foreign Film category at the 2011 Academy Awards, Terraferma is indeed a striking film, even if it is a bit heavy-handed in doling out its message. Director Emanuele Crialese, who was also behind Respiro and Golden Door, has made a film that attempts to portray a bit of fun-in-thesun balanced with a guilty social conscience by focusing his camera on the issue of African immigration into Italy. (Toronto Film Scene) There is something so majestic, lyrical and soulful about Terraferma, that we kept returning to it. It is a work of pure cinema, stirring responses both primal and cerebral in its audience. A film that demands to be discussed as Angela no doubt would have done, with enthusiasm, passion and conviction. (Toronto Film Critics Association) [ ] TERRAFERMA by Emanuele Crialese ANGELA BALDASSARRE AWARD
2012 Honourable Mention Well, it s that time of year again: another Woody Allen film hits theatres. In Allen s latest film, he continues his love affair with Europe, and after London, Barcelona and Paris, the nebbish director lands in Rome. The film, which is making its Canadian premiere at the festival, follows the lives of colourful American and Italian characters, with a cast that includes Alec Baldwin, Penelope Cruz, and Roberto Life is Beautiful Benigni. (BlogTO) We feel it needs far more respect and admiration that many critics are currently giving it. Odd that a film by one of the world s most feted filmmakers is a dark horse, but the feeling is that the level of craft on display here ranks it among Woody s better efforts, one that may be misunderstood and yet, in the context of this particular fest especially, has much to offer... (Toronto Film Critics Association) [ ] TO ROME WITH LOVE by Woody Allen CANADIAN PREMIERE at the ICFF
2012 People s Choice Award THE ICFF AUDIENCE AWARD was voted by moviegoers for the Best Narrative feature of the festival. In his debut feature, screenwriter Ivan Cotroneo (I Am Love) pursues his preoccupation with family dynamics, this time tracking a Neapolitan clan dealing with the cultural upheaval of the early 70s. (NOW Magazine) The festival is bookended by a pair of high-profile offerings. Opening the festivities is Kryptonite! (TIFF Bell Lightbox, June 26, 7 p.m.), I Am Love-scripter Ivan Cotroneo s period piece about a Neapolitan family riding the tumultuous wave of the 1970s. (torontoist.com) KRYPTONITE! by Ivan Cotroneo Silvio Mastrodascio (The Artist) Born in Cerqueto (Fano Adriano, Province of Teramo) Silvio Mastrodascio is one of the most prominent Italian Canadian artists. 2012 IC Savings Award Unfolding like a good, old-fashioned pulp mystery novel, La Scomparsa Di Patò (The Vanishing of Patò) makes its Toronto debut at the Italian Contemporary Film Festival and is sure to delight audiences with its gallows humour and precisely plotted story. (Corriere Canadese) [ ] THE VANISHING OF PATÒ by Rocco Mortelliti The ICFF was honoured to precede the screening with an interview with award-winning screenwriter and novelist Andrea Camilleri.
