The Home for Humor & Laughter Professionals August 2016 Annual Conference 2017 Orlando, Florida This complimentary Humor Connection newsletter is one of the many ways that AATH fulfills our mission to study, practice and promote healthy humor. You can join our efforts by joining AATH at www.aath.org Letter from the President Our July AATH membership drive was a ROCKING SUCCESS. Our membership committee has worked very hard to maintain and grow our membership. Our data guru, Amy Robbins reports that as a result of this committee's hard work, we have had an increase of 46% in the past 16 months. Welcome to all of you who have joined our AATH family. We are thrilled to have you join us. We will make every effort to make sure your AATH investment brightens your life with humor and laughter. Sporty King and Heidi Hanna, AATH conference chairs, are very excited about the upcoming conference April 27-30th in Orlando. We received over 70 speaker applications for the conference! Our board meets at the Holiday Inn Host hotel in Disney Springs at the end of September. All members are invited to join us for a reception and planning session on Friday evening Sept 23rd as we explore conference marketing options. Florida residents: If you are interested in joining us for a fun evening please RSVP by August 24th to me marykay@questsforhumor.com or to event coordinator Jae Pierce-Baba jaepiercebaba@gmail.com. As a former kindergarten teacher and education administrator, I always get nostalgic at this time of year when many of us are involved in back to school activities. And we are grateful to members like Linnea "Nay" Heintz who quickly volunteered to help on the membership committee with these words. "I would be honored to call those members and anyone else you have for me for that matter!" We also Awakening the Laughing Buddha Within by Joe Hoare and the Barefoot Doctor (Reviewed by Diane Roosth) This book takes the benefits of laughter into the core practices and culture related to the concept of the Buddha. Our author acknowledges the work of Patch Adams, MD, and the Gesundheit Institute since 1971, as a backdrop to his approach to laughter. He talks about core practices, including emotional warmth and lightness, for waking up our inner Buddha to smiling and laughing. He contrasts the western notion of finding funny to laugh, versus his approach of laughing and then finding something funny. A follower of Laughter Yoga and the work of Dr. Madan Kataria, MD, he talks about the benefits of Laughter Clubs throughout his book. He also quotes American psychologist William James whose 19th Century work emphasized that "laughter precedes and boosts happiness." He talks about how he used laughter to address insomnia, stress, and his own fears of "financial insecurity and losing" his "savings." He quotes the Dalai Lama who said: "Be optimistic. It feels better." Mr. Hoare's research includes news 2 of 7

remember Nay for volunteering to be with Gurinder Bains as they were immersed in shaving cream during the games facilitated by Beth Slazak. Back to School with AATH In a few short weeks, students will be heading back to class. Why not head back with them? AATH offers humor studies through their unique Humor Academy. Although the next class doesn't start until the AATH Pre-Conference day, April 27, 2017, registration is right around the corner, with discounts for AATH members who enroll. Our progressive levels of yearlong studies include: Level I Humor Studies Foundation: overview of the theory and research of humor practice Level II Application and Humor Practice: continued learning and culminating in a project demonstrating new research or research-based humor application Level III Leadership both in AATH and in the participant's field: active demonstration of humor practice Upon successful completion of all stories that illuminate the benefits of laughter to respond to emotional challenges. "The theme of depression and using laughing as an uplifting counter-measure is part of Belachew Girma's story. He featured in a BBC Radio 4 News piece in 2003 when he knelt on his prayer mat in a corner of Meckel Square in Addis Ababa and laughed for two hours. He himself had suffered catastrophic personal and financial loss...and he said 'Please let us communicate by smiling.' He used the slogan, 'laughter, love, peace for all human beings.'" Our author uses a sequence of exercises to guide the reader to "radiate your Laughing Buddha Vibration" in sound, mind and spirit. He uses guided imagery to connect us with "Merry Laughing" so we can connect with the planets and stars in our work. Thank you to this UK author for a unique approach to laughing as a cross cultural practice. Members who would like their book to be considered for an upcoming Humor Connection book review, should contact info@aath.org. Please use Book Review Submission in the subject line. three years of the Academy, our alumni may apply to continue their work as a Certified Humor Professional - C.H.P. Contact Nila Nielsen at: ninielsen@me.com Certified Humor Professional (CHP) Recognition Kay Caskey Health and Humor...a 3 credit online university class Kay Caskey learned from her grandmother that "those that laugh, last." So in the last century, old friend Laurie Young and Kay formed Laughter Works, a partnership that presents workshops on the value of humor and a few good laughs along the way. Teaching people how to juggle is one of their primary workshop tools, i.e., helping participants laugh while they learn an unfamiliar skill. Kay and Laurie have also been part-time associate professors for many years at Western Michigan University teaching courses of their own design. Lifelong laugher Kay has been an activist member of AATH since it began. brings to so many others through her business Laughter Yoga with Alexa. It is always fun to see what past board member, Kathy Laurenhue is doing. She is currently on sabbatical in Melbourne, Australia- and yes, she and fellow CHP, Bron Roberts have had fun connecting there. Check out her Website Wiser Now for amazing resources and free fun ideas. You can also read her blog about this cuddly Koala Bear. One of my favorites is MOOD ELEVATORS that she created with the talented fellow AATH member and CHP, Deb Gauldin. Sporty King reports that there have been many conference speaker proposals submitted this month. He and the committee are looking forward to reviewing these as part of the speaker selection process for our 2016 conference in Orlando April 27-30th. Watch for exciting news announcing our keynote speakers addressing "Humor: The Power and Purpose of Play." Registration and scholarship information will be available soon. SEND YOUR MEMBER NEWS: info@aath.org "Sending a huge hug and an enormous thank you to everyone in AATH and to all my Humor Academy buddies. Today I was asked to run a laughter yoga session for grade 12 (final high school year) students. It was during their lunchtime, they arrived with food. I'd worked with one of the teachers clearing the space for the session, the kids got out all the chairs we'd stacked to the sides of the room so they could sit. Thanks to the humor academy and all the sessions I've attended at AATH conferences and all the training provided by all my amazing AATH peeps I could have a brilliant conversation with them about resilience, the how of happiness and the why of laughter, celebration and gratitude. They loved it so much they've invited me back and how good did I feel when the head teacher asked me about my qualifications and I could talk with him about graduating from the Humor Academy! A good day all round!! Sending you all hugs!!" DONATIONS TO AATH ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE: Thank you for your continued support of AATH! You can write a check to AATH and send to the office or you can: 1.
