We created this collection of new, easy songs to energize beginning players who want to play tunes that sound good to their ears. Our great accompaniment tracks will make those early weeks of recorder lots more fun. And if you are using a reward system with your recorder method, like Recorder Karate, this will give you a way to spend more time on easier tunes as your players gain more confidence. Thunder Hawk Bold and brassy, this rockin tune might be the theme to an adventure series, or the music behind a big scene. It features the notes B and A, and the melody is just repetitive enough to make it the easiest song in the collection. As with many tunes in the collection, we provide four tracks: full performance, long and short; and accompaniment only, long and short. The short versions are handy if you are testing for belts or other rewards. Rock on! ACcelerate If you are one of the many teachers who like to start recorder classes with A and C, this is the tune for you. It s a lean modern rock in style, and it is simple and quite repetitive, though the tracks make it interesting for the players every time. In this case, the tune is short enough that we have just one length for the tune in the recordings provided. Bumblebee Bop Even though this tune only features the note B, we have made it the third tune in the collection because it requires more rhythm reading skills including a nice mix of quarter notes, half notes, and rests. The song is a big band swing version of Rimsky-Korsakov s famous Flight Of The Bumblebee. It is available here in two lengths, including a short version for testing if you so desire. Chillaxin The title says it all for this laid back rock tune. It is a perfect first tune to feature B, A, and G. Most of the melody is stepwise half notes, only transitioning to quarter notes at the end of the song. There are two versions of this one, one longer and a short one for optional testing. Flutter By, Butterfly This lovely ballad in 3/ meter is a great way to work on legato playing and breath control. Start by playing two measures in a breath, then move on to four bar phrasing, being sure that the last note is held full value. 12 The recording features our great rhythm section plus a rich string section. For the second time through the song, our solo violinist, the amazing Phil Palermo, plays a beautiful high obbligato solo over the song. Again, there are two versions of the song, one longer, and one shorter for testing or shorter performances. Luna Kahuna Many of you have known and used the old French folk song Au Clair de la Lune with your recorder classes, but you ve never heard it like this! John has set it cleverly as a surf rock style tune, and it s lots of fun for your young players. He has definitely put new life in this favorite old BAG tune. While there are two different sets of recordings for the tune, in this case, one version is just a bit faster than the other. As your players get the hang of it, they can move from one to the other. Both are short enough to use for testing. Lightspeed Caterpillar John and Paul have built a cool roller coaster of a tune, complete with sound effects. Based on BAG, this fun-loving rock tune spends much of its melodic time going up and down like the aforementioned coaster, and it s built completely out of half notes and whole notes. As with many of the tunes, there are two versions, long and short, but for performances, we highly recommend the longer version as the arrangement builds to an exciting ending, and that s harder to accomplish with the shorter one. Feel free to let your kids whoop it up at the end with the coaster riders on the recording. Renaissance Circle Dance For the first addition of the note C to BAG thus far learned, Paul has done a nice setting of Gervaise s Bransle de Champagne, a stately circle dance. For the recording, we have assembled a fine period ensemble featuring lute and strings. There are both long and short recordings for your convenience. Also included are optional percussion parts: one for hand drum, and one for finger cymbals. Feel free to add your own ideas for other percussion instruments. Juba Jump Our last song is an infectious world beat rock setting adapted from the folk song Juba. Most of the tune is spent moving through A, B, and C, just settling on G at the end. It s a great song to use for classes that start with A and C to move toward the new tones. Again, we provide longer and shorter recordings to give you options.
