Grow a Pumpkin Helen Chapman

Reading Planet Notes In this book Your child may need help with these words: grow spaces small what new inside soil water Say them out loud together before you start reading. about five months orange heavy make picture soup Ready-to-read activity Say the following words as individual sounds for your child to reply with the whole word (this is known as blending). For example, say p-u-m-p-k-i-n, and your child replies pumpkin. Now try these: p-ai-n-t, s-oi-l, a-b-ou-t, s-ou-p. Before reading Look at the front cover and the back cover text together. Ask your child: Do you know what a pumpkin is? Where have you seen a pumpkin? While reading Ask your child to say something about what is happening on each page of the book. For example: What is the boy doing with the watering can? Pause from time to time and check that your child has understood the meaning of the words they have read. Can they tell you what the words grow, heavy and scoop mean? As you go through the book, encourage your child to talk about what they are learning and how it relates to their own experiences. After reading, encourage your child to talk about what they have read. You ll find ideas for questions and activities at the back of this book.

Talk about the book Ask your child these questions: 1 What do pumpkins need to grow? 2 What is inside a pumpkin? 3 What can you make from a pumpkin? 4 Where do pumpkins grow? 5 Can you think of some other fruits and vegetables that are orange? 6 What are your favourite fruits and vegetables? 12

After ReadING Try these activities with your child: Plant some seeds and see how they grow! Make a label with the name and a picture of what you have planted, and put it in the soil near your seeds. Cut up some fruit so your child can discover which fruits have seeds inside them. Use the fruit to make a fruit salad. Ready-to-read tip Visit your local library with your child and let them choose books to read aloud and explore together at home. Decorate a pumpkin using some brightly coloured paints. Or help your child to make a pumpkin lantern.
