Contemporary published report In 1800, Vienna had two opera houses, and no (public) concert hall The (Italian opera) orchestra has no lack of estimable players Herr Conti, the director, is obviously unequal to his task. The German opera falls short of expectations Its orchestra has far fewer worthy subjects (but) often have far better performances, to the credit of its worthy director. There are no regular concerts here Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung III (1800)
Must not ignore opera But it will not be the focus of this course There are LIFE opera courses for those so inclined Three (brief) examples of opera Haydn s Armida (54 performances between 1784 and 1788) [2 recordings] Salieri s Falstaff (26 performances between 1799 and 1802) [4 recordings] Mozart s Magic Flute (100 performances between 1791 and 1792) [41 recordings]
Haydn s Armida To prevent the capture of Jerusalem by the knights of the First Crusade, The Prince of Darkness has sent the enchantress Armida into the world to seduce the Christian heroes and turn them from their duty. The bravest of these, Rinaldo, has fallen under Armida's spell. She comes to love him so deeply that she cannot bring herself to destroy him. Wikipedia

Salieri s Falstaff One of the earliest operatic versions of Shakespeare's play, Salieri's Falstaff is notable for a general compression and streamlining of the original plot, note the absence of the two young lovers, Fenton and Anne, and the addition of a scene in which Mistress Ford pretends to be German to charm Falstaff Wikipedia

Magic Flute (1791) The opera was the culmination of a period of increasing involvement by Mozart with Schikaneder's theatrical troupe, which since 1789 had been the resident company at the Theater auf der Wieden. Mozart was a close friend of one of the singer-composers of the troupe, tenor Benedikt Schack (the first Tamino), and had contributed to the compositions of the troupe Wikipedia

Authentic? Should we experience music, including opera, as it was originally presented? Logical challenge: We are not, and cannot be, an 1800 audience! Many, most performances of operas are modernized Sometimes irritating norm at the COC But we can always turn to Opera Atelier
