These are separate application processes. Admission to the Music Therapy Program is dependent on BOTH Admission to USU and successful completion of the Music Therapy application process. For admission to Utah State University, apply online at www.usu.edu/admissions/applyonline/ or visit the website of the Office of Admissions (usu.edu/admissions) to obtain USU application materials. You may also telephone the Office of Admissions at (435) 797-1079 to request the application materials be mailed to you directly. Music Therapy Major Audition Requirements Music therapy auditions occur in a 2-step process consisting of: (1) a pre-selection audition, and (2) an on-site audition. Pre-selection audition ~ All materials due by December 18, 2018 1. Complete the Music Therapy Application 2. Request to have your high school or college transcripts sent directly to the music therapy program director, Dr. Hearns, at maureen.hearns@usu.edu. Applicants with at least one year of college attendance do not need to send their high school transcript ~ the college transcript will be sufficient. If you have personal access to these records, an Unofficial Transcript or copy (scanned PDF file) or the original is acceptable. 3. Submit a video link (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.) of applicant singing one song and accompanying themselves on either guitar or piano. Please use the Recorded Video Submission Form at https://music.usu.edu/students/recorded-audition-form. Use the 1 st Selection fields to submit this information. 4. Submit a second video link with your one or two-minute response to the following questions: What is music therapy? and What makes this career well suited for me? Please use the Recorded Video Submission Form at https://music.usu.edu/students/recorded-audition-form. Use the 2 nd Selection fields to submit this response. NOTIFICATION OF ACCEPTANCE FOR ON-SITE AUDITION: You will be notified during the first week of January as to whether or not you are being invited to campus for an on-site audition. On-site auditions ~ February 9, 2019 Submit additional materials requested on page 8 by February 1 st. 1. Page 2 of 8 2. The additional materials described on the last page of this application must be received by February 1 st. On-site auditions will be on February 9, 2019. 3. Potential music therapy majors who have been invited to the on-campus audition must also audition on their major instrument for the studio faculty in the respective area. Please check the audition requirements online for your specific instrument (piano, voice, strings, etc.) to guide you in preparing for this audition. In most cases, applicants will submit this video electronically. 4. Scheduling for all music therapy auditions will be done by Cary Youmans, our Student Support Services staff secretary. He will contact you to schedule the time of your audition and provide you with any specific information you need for submitting your video to the studio faculty associated with your major performing instrument. Submission of Music Therapy Major Application Materials All pre-audition and subsequent on-site audition application materials should be sent as a PDF or electronic document to: Maureen C. Hearns, PhD Associate Professor; Director, Music Therapy Program E-mail: maureen.hearns@usu.edu General factors considered throughout the application process include (but are not limited to): 1. minimum GPA for admission consideration is 3.0 2. demonstration of musicianship (vocal and instrumental) 3. basic understanding of the music therapy profession 4. personal motivation for becoming a music therapist 5. previous academic, community, and personal accomplishments If you have been accepted to Utah State University, and plan to attend in the fall, but are not accepted into the Music Therapy Program, you may still enroll in required General Education courses (see Fall Semester Class Schedule) and re-audition the following year. You may also enroll in Music 1310 - Introduction to Music Therapy, however you may need to obtain the instructor s permission to do so, as this will be determined by space availability. Transfer Students Requirements for acceptance into the Music Therapy Program are more stringent for juniors than for freshman/sophomores. In addition to having a minimum college GPA of 3.0, the applicant must also be able to perform musically at a higher level in piano, voice, and guitar as well as their major performing/principle instrument. Financial Aid and Scholarship Resources The Music Therapy Program extends scholarship opportunities for all matriculated music therapy majors each year.
