Posted - 28/01/2007 : 14:19:24 Now some one was supposed to start a fishnet thread! Wasn't it clare? or Soph? Posted - 28/01/2007 : 15:32:52 Brilliant thread. Thanks, Cas. The first one looks more like Carol Channing (or a drag queen?) to me. Second one captures more of Dusty IMO although isn't it interesting what features cartoonists exaggerate. The adore the one about her deporation from South Africa. They capture the dress, and even have the bow in the hair. She would probably not like how they drew her legs. LOL. Not to exaggerate, but the overall cartoon brings to mind the image of the Chinese citizen standing before the tank in Tienaman (sp?) Square. daydreamer Posted - 28/01/2007 : 16:14:51 This drawing caused a bit of a stir when it first appeared and I can understand why, at least where Madeline is concerned. dustyspringfield.info/ /topic.asp?ar 4/18

daydreamer Posted - 28/01/2007 : 17:25:15 It wouldn't happen now, but the sixties were less PC by a long way. I think it was in Melody Maker, one of the music papers anyway. Carole x 5404 Posts Cas19 Wasn't born to follow Posted - 28/01/2007 : 17:52:58 Yes I have that one too... I was undecided as to whether I should put it on the thread or not..it was a bit controversial at the time. Casx 8313 Posts Posted - 28/01/2007 : 19:28:15 Just took a closer look and see they have Mads in a maids costume. Outrageous! I bet Dusty didn't care for this one AT ALL. daydreamer Posted - 28/01/2007 : 20:12:40 Around the time that Madeline was in Blue Mink, she did an interview in Titbits Magazine. She said "I remember one guy, a Sunday columnist, writing this weird peice about me being Dusty's maid like we were a pair of kinks. It hurt me. and it hurt Dusty. We thought of sending some manure to his home. But most of these things heal after a time". Not sure which came first, the drawing or the article, either way, they must have been appalled by it. Dusty lives in us Posted - 31/01/2007 : 01:58:15 Cas, was that cartoon any time around when she did the roller skating routine in her act? I think she didn't really skate too much, did she? Sophie, quite right. Good Dustyology question. Context and all. Karenina, is this your sketch? Seems like it might better go under Fan Art than cartoon. Looks like a Pieta to me...am I right? daydreamer Posted - 31/01/2007 : 07:28:13 The roller skating sketch would have been much earlier, from the mid sixties, when Pat was still a Barnett and a world champion speed skater. Teda has the advantage cos I know what she looks like!anyway according to that poem that Dusty liked there is enough love to go around....and maybe its whoever lived at Dona 'TERESA' Drive with Dusty. So I will still have to let the face magically appear. I am getting more of a Rodin for Ro and just hope the face materialises by itself.
