How to use this Workbook This workbook is designed to be used in conjunction with A Look at Literature. During your atelier de literature, you can create your own glossary of new words and expressions you encounter during your reading and thereby increase your English vocabulary. Here are some simple steps to follow during the course of the semester When you encounter a word in the reading that you don t understand... 1) First, write it down in your glossary and note the page number and line number; then, 2) Try to understand the word by its context (don t worry if you don t understand every word); next, 3) Save the word(s) for the next class, (There will time to review any and all vocabulary words before discussion of the assigned text); finally, 4) After the class discussion, look up the word in the dictionary to find the proper definition and fill in the rest of the information in the glossary. Here is an example on how to fill in and create your glossary: Penny P. 38 L. 1 Gift of the Magi (n.) A monetary unit equal to 1/100 of a dollar. A coin of 1 cent. Correct Remember there are many ways to increase your English vocabulary, but the best way is READ! READ! READ! Why not enjoy a good story while allowing the author to take you on a linguistic journey and introduce you to new vocabulary words, expressions and images? Visualizing words in context is a great way to help you absorb the word and add it to your passive English vocabulary. Using the word will allow you integrate it into your active vocabulary. So review your glossary periodically and choose words at random, then create sentences using the chosen words. But most of all: Enjoy! Atelier Littérature A Look at Literature Vocabulary Supplement 2
