Vie A Concerto for Orchestra Jukka Tiensuu 2007

Jukka Tiensuu: Vie A Concerto for Orchestra Instrumentation: 2 flutes (doubling piccolo) 2 oboes 2 clarinets in B b 1 bass clarinet 2 bassoons 2 horns in F *) 2 trumpets in C *) 2 trombones in B b /F *) 1 bass tuba *) percussions: 1. Timpani I-III-II-IV (-V) and Glockenspiel - seated far left (seen from the conductor) (it might facilitate the performance of some passages, if the order of timpani were (left to right): lowest, midlle - second lowest - second highest - highest) 2. Bass drum (large), Tam-tam (large), Tom-toms and crotales - seated left or far left (close to timpani). Bass drum, Tom-toms and Vibraphone - seated far right Strings *) double ad lib, to: - give a broader and more massive sound (in f-ff. The soft passages are preferably played solo) - make the performance less strenuous by a) letting the players take turns in fast/repeated figures and b) helping the players to maintain the ff in long notes Performance note Tempi are approximate, but the verbal characterisation of the segments is of vital importance. Accidentals always apply till the end of the bar, but they are occasionally repeated to facilitate sight-reading. Ornaments: mordent: and pralltrill: both start on the main note (mordents down, pralltrills up, as usual). Mordents can have three of five notes, pralltills anything from four to eight depending on the the musical context. Appoggiaturas are played before the beat. Wide vibrato Glissandi /. o l.v. clb The glissandi are played continuosly during the indicated time (not portamento), but expression through small change of speed during the glissando is encouraged. A small note-head at the end of the glissando-line only shows the approximate ending pitch, it is not articulated. Likewise, normal notes in the middle of glissando are for orientation only, they are not to be re-attacked. tenuto, play the note to the full length. All staccati notes are played short regardless of the duration of the written note. Think of a shortish 16th-note. al niente, let the sound disappear imperceptibly. Let strings (or percussion instruments) vibrate as long as possible. col legno battuto (also indicated as a circle around the note-head). After hitting the string, let it resonate as long as convenient.
