Unitel KARAJAN VS. BERNSTEIN BATTLE OF GIANTS A film by Emmanuelle Franc Bernstein vs. Karajan: a musical Yalta. They were on top of the world of classical music, reflecting also the political conflicts of their time: the grandson of a rabbi against a member of Hitler s national-socialist party, America against Europe, modernists against traditionalists. These two conductors mostly distinguished themselves by renovating the music industry, television and opera. They were icons of the 1970s who created a special sort of glamour in classical music and at the same time contributed to its democratization. Length: 52' Cat. no. A 010 50099 A co-production of Zadig Productions, INA and Orchestre National d'île-de-france with the participation of France Télévisions and CNC, distributed by UNITEL picture alliance / Heritage Imag PRELUDE TO DEBUSSY A film by Marie Guilloux Claude Debussy died one hundred years ago. His writings reveal a personality both profoundly non-conformist and extreme. For some, his music is mysterious and impenetrable, for others it is fascinating and brilliant. In this film, contemporary artists among them conductor Philippe Jordan, singer Barbara Hannigan and pianist Alexandre Tharaud recount their Debussy, providing keys to a better understanding of the composer s works and the radical rupture they constituted at his time. The film follows the course of Debussy s life, evokes his muses, his inspirational crises and the controversies he provoked by both his music and his writings. The portrait is completed by up to now unpublished archival interviews and excerpts of performances by great Debussians like Samson François, Leonard Bernstein and Pierre Boulez. Length: 52' Cat. no. A 010 50098 A co-production of Schuch Productions, ARTE France and BnF, with support from Procirep-Angoa and the Sacem in association with CNC and UNITEL 2

Unitel LEONARD BERNSTEIN A GENIUS DIVIDED A film by Thomas von Steinaecker One of the first US born conductors to receive worldwide fame, Leonard Bernstein has been an exceptional composer and certainly not only due to West Side Story. Instead of concentrating exclusively on his most famous work, Thomas von Steinaecker sets out to paint a complete picture of Bernstein. Thus, the documentary focusses on the American s less known later works and on three compositions in particular: his Mass, the musical 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and the great final opera A Quiet Place. The film paints a vivid picture of the multitalented Bernstein, struggling with his role as composer and conductor, tackling the tension between successes and flops, between the politics of his time and his own liberal humanitarian claim. It looks back at Bernstein s major achievements, such as his acclaimed conducting of Mahler and his involvement in the Young People s Concerts, and it shows Bernstein s work with young aspiring musicians as well as his political commitment. Joining the dots, Thomas von Steinaecker is creating a genuine portrait of Bernstein on his quest to his ultimate masterwork: the great American opera. Length: 54' Cat. no. A 050 50573 A production of 3B-Produktion in co-production with UNITEL, SRF and ZDF in cooperation with ARTE Julia Baier BRAHMS 4 PAAVO JÄRVI & THE DEUTSCHE KAMMER- PHILHARMONIE BREMEN A film by Christian Berger This documentary by award-winning film director Christian Berger explores the four symphonies by Johannes Brahms, which were performed in a complete cycle by the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris (also available in the UNITEL catalogue: Cat. no. A 015 50104 0000). Through the eyes of the musicians and their artistic director Paavo Järvi the viewer experiences the peaks of these romantic masterpieces and receives information for a better understanding. Length: 2 x 42 / 90 Cat. no. A 045 50091 0000 A production of Deutsche Welle in association with BFMI and UNITEL 3

Paul Scala Zoë Dominic BIRGIT NILSSON A LEAGUE OF HER OWN A documentary by Thomas Voigt and Wolfgang Wunderlich An intimate portrait of Birgit Nilsson (1918 2005) on the occasion of her centennial on 17 th May 2018: The Swedish soprano had an incredible technique and was the world s leading dramatic soprano between 1955 and 1975. Rare TV and archive footage shows Nilsson at work, and is complemented by interviews with Plácido Domingo, Otto Schenk, James Levine, Nina Stemme, Jonas Kaufmann and many others. The film reveals a sensitive woman behind the honest, down to earth, quick-witted artist, who had a voice like fire and ice (Sir Antonio Pappano). The documentary was shot at the farm in Båstad/Sweden, where Nilsson grew up and spent the summers until the end of her life, at the Royal Opera in Stockholm, where the legendary Wagnerian singer made her operatic debut in 1946, and in places like the Bayreuth Festival, the Wiener Staatsoper and the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where Nilsson was the star and box office draw. Unitel LEONARD BERNSTEIN YOUNG PEOPLE S CONCERTS 52 EPISODES AVAILABLE There had never been a communicator about music with anywhere near Bernstein s brilliance, humor, energy, reach and importance. The New York Times Leonard Bernstein s legendary series Young People s Concerts remains unmatched until today. Leonard Bernstein did this better than anyone. He was brilliant as a musician and as an ambassador for music (Whoopie Goldberg). Awarded three Emmys and hailed by Variety as a rare moment in the symbiosis of the arts and broadcasting, the Young People s Concerts left their mark on television history. Aired at prime-time on CBS from 1958 to 1972, 52 one-hour programs were written and hosted by Leonard Bernstein, certainly the most influential American maestro of the 20th century (The New York Times). With the New York Philharmonic and guest artists providing the live music, these programs brought musical concepts and music history to life for generations of viewers. Length: each approx. 55' Cat. no. A 035 05124 0000 A production of Video Music Education, Inc. Original Program furnished courtesy of CBS Entertainment, a division of CBS Inc. Distributed by UNITEL Franz Neumayr MARKUS HINTERHÄUSER AN ARTIST RUNS THE SALZBURG FESTIVAL A film by Bettina Ehrhardt He is one of them: Markus Hinterhäuser, the new director of the Salzburg Festival, is an artist himself. That might be the reason why he communicates so effortless with the protagonists of the festival. To create an in-depth portrait of Hinterhäuser, Bettina Ehrhardt followed the Austrian around the clock, compiling snap-shots of his life. The film accompanies him to the rehearsals for Jedermann, meets renowned artists such as Peter Sellars, Shirin Neshat and William Kentridge and observes how the director solves problems and how he celebrates with his team. On a stroll through Salzburg s picturesque alleys, Markus Hinterhäuser delivers insight into his past; archive footage brings the flashbacks to life. In the rapid alternation of the documentary scenes, which are punctuated by moments of reflection, the artist and the human Markus Hinterhäuser reveals himself. Length: 26' Cat. no. A 055 50701 A production of BCE Films in co-production with WDR in cooperation with ARTE and UNITEL 6

Berlin Phil Media SHORT RIDES WITH JOHN ADAMS A documentary by Magdalena Zięba-Schwind & Daniel Finkernagel John Adams, one of the most influential and most popular US composers, is known for his irresistible music in which minimalism is mixed with imaginative orchestration and jazzy verve. Film makers Magdalena Zięba-Schwind and Daniel Finkernagel accompanied the composer for a year on his explorations and short rides in Berlin, when Adams was the first ever composer to be Artist in Residence of the Berliner Philharmoniker. The film, shot in Berlin and L.A., documents both on and off stage encounters with musicians of the Berliner Philharmoniker, old friends and associates such as Sir Simon Rattle, Peter Sellars, Gustavo Dudamel and star violinist Leila Josefowicz ( I call him Johnny ). The rehearsals and the concert of the oratorio The Gospel According to the Other Mary form the emotional highlight of the documentary. A film not only for connaisseurs and admirers just like the music of John Adams. Length: 45' Cat. no. A 055 50705 A production of Berlin Phil Media in co-production with UNITEL Marco Borggreve Privatarchiv Droemer ZUBIN MEHTA A portrait by Bettina Ehrhardt Zubin Mehta is one of the world s leading conductors. Born and raised in India, he is a brilliant symbol of today s cross-cultural world and a living proof of the power of music to bridge different cultures and to break social and political barriers. The film deals with an artist loved by audiences and musicians alike because he radiates warmth and humanity, in both his music and his life. Length: 58' / 90' Cat. no. A 050 50283 A production of bce films, ZDF/arte and UNITEL CLASSICA BARBARA HANNIGAN MUSIC IS MUSIC A documentary by Mathieu Amalric The very first moments of the rehearsals for Crazy Girl Crazy, Barbara Hannigan s first album as both singer and conductor, were filmed by Mathieu Amalric, the celebrated French actor and director who won the Best Director Award at the Cannes Festival in 2010 for his film On Tour (Tournée) as well as a special award created at Cannes in 2017, the prize for the poetry of cinema, for his latest film.
