We re celebrating Valentine s Day with a true lover letter to cinema, as we screen the timeless Italian classic that epitomises and embraces the magic of cinema-going. The second film by Giuseppe Tornatore (Malena) is a nostalgic evocation of his childhood days, but also of those bygone times when people used to go to the cinema as part of an almost daily routine. Told largely via flashbacks, the film starts with a middle-aged director reflecting on his youth and friendship with a wise old picture-house projectionist named Alfredo, as well as reminiscing of his first (and implied, only) love, Elena. Winner of the Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards, Cinema Paradiso has since endured and endeared as one of the great coming-of-age pictures in cinema as well as a charming and poignant reminder of the lost art of cinema-going. A better, brighter, more equal future shimmers on the horizon, yet we seem to be hurtling in the opposite direction. Deranged presidents and dangerous populists aren t the only culprits. As progressive movements do battle with each other and among themselves, Mayer draws on her front-line experiences of journalism and politics to explain how debates became so damagingly polarised, to the detriment of all of us. Is identity politics to blame? What makes us mistrust everyone but fall for fake news? Are we getting nastier - and might our attitudes to celebrity fuel this trend? Why do TED Talks bring Mayer out in hives? The simple truth, she says, is that life is complicated - and we ll reach the feminist future she calls Equalia only by embracing that complexity.
