FESTIVAL OF INGMAR BERGMAN -100 YEARS 16 Oct - 3 Nov 2018. Belgrade

In 2018, the world s largest international celebration of a single film auteur will be held in honor of the Swedish director, producer, and screenwriter Ingmar Bergman, and the 100th anniversary of his birth. The iconic Swedish auteur s body of work for film and theatre brought a new level of psychological depth and intimacy to all disciplines of the performing arts. We welcome you to see some of his most known films, to take part in creative workshops and inspiring lectures, and also to experience the works of Bergman as theatre plays. Follow the festival and share your best festival memories through the hashtag; #bergmaninbelgrade The festival is organized by the Embassy of Sweden, in cooperation with the Swedish Institute, the Yugoslav Film Archive, KC Grad and M.A.M.M.A Production. PROGRAM TUESDAY, 16 OCTOBER FACULTY OF DRAMA ARTS, Bulevar umetnosti 20, Belgrade 13.00 Far too much human matter Ingmar Bergman s characters: male, female, androgynous queer? Lecture by Mareet Koskinen, Maaret Koskinen, professor in film studies is the first scholar given access to Ingmar Bergman s private papers and appointed Honorary Ingmar Bergman Professor by Stockholm University and the Ingmar Bergman Foundation jointly in 2009. She has authored several books on Bergman s work in film, theatre, and literature. She is presently the Chair of the Swedish Film Academy.

Abstract: It is hardly news that women take central stage in Ingmar Bergman s films, nor the fact that certain prominent women actors have contributed to his international fame. Less noticed is arguably the gendering of the male (as male) that permeates Bergman s work, both his films and theater productions. Even less so is the androgynous theme and outright queer aspects as part of the human condition. On the whole, in Bergman s work sexuality and gender tend to be fluid entities doubled, divided and negotiable. TUESDAY, 16 OCTOBER 19.00 Opening of the Festival (by invitation only) 20.30 Saraband Bergman s farewell and most personal film production Saraband is a musically-mathematically organized masterpiece which Bergman directed at the age of 85. It was aired in 2003 for the first time as a TV-film. The story is a sequel to Bergman's Scenes from a Marriage (1973), bringing back the characters of Johan and Marianne. Marianne, some thirty years after divorcing Johan, decides to visit her ex-husband at his summer home and

she arrives in the middle of a family drama. The film is not just Bergman s last film, it`s also his most personal. A photo of Bergman s wife Ingrid, who passed away 1995 in cancer, can for example be seen in the movie. With: Erland Josephson, Liv Ullman, Börje Ahlstedt, Julia Dufvenius. WEDNESDAY, 17 OCTOBER 19.00 Ingmar Bergman Today Global and Local perspectives Panel discussion: Mareet Koskinen, professor in film studies Miroljub Stojanović, editor of publishing at Film Centre of Serbia; with guests Moderator: Jelena Mila 20.00 Persona With elements of psychological horror, Persona from 1966 has been the subject of considerable analysis, interpretation and debate. The film, with its themes of duality, insanity and personal identity, has been interpreted as depicting the Jungian theory of

persona and explores cinema, vampire mythology, lesbianism, motherhood, abortion and other subjects. When first released, Persona was edited because of its controversial subject matter, but It received positive reviews. It also won the Best Film award at the 4th Guldbagge Awards, and was Sweden's entry for the Oscars Academy Award as Best Foreign Language Film. With: Liv Ullman, Bibi Andersson, Margareta Krook, Gunnar Björnstrand, Jörgen Lindström. THURSDAY, 18 OCTOBER 20.00 Wild Strawberries Through flashbacks, fantasies, dreams, nightmares and philosophical themes related to the human existence, Wild Strawberries dramatizes one man s remarkable voyage of self-discovery. This richly humane masterpiece from 1957, full of iconic imagery, is one of Ingmar Bergman s most widely acclaimed and influential films. With: Victor Sjöström, Bibi Andersson, Ingrid Thulin.

FRIDAY, 19 OCTOBER 20.00 Autumn Sonata Autumn Sonata is a 1978 Swedish drama film written and directed by Ingmar Bergman and Ingrid Bergman starring. This intense domestic drama offers insights into the troubled relationships between a mother and her two daughters, one of whom is dying of a terrible disease that has left her paralyzed and only able to communicate via grunts, and the other who has been estranged from her mother for seven years. With: Ingrid Bergman, Liv Ullman, Lena Nyman, Halvar Björk SATURDAY, 20 OCTOBER 18.00 The Seventh Seal The Seventh Seal is considered a classic of world cinema, as well as one of the greatest movies of all time. This 1957 Swedish historical fantasy film established Bergman as a world-renowned director and contains scenes which have become iconic. The film takes place during the Black Death and tells the journey of a medieval knight and a game of chess he plays with the personification of Death. One famous quote which shows the deepness in the film is How are you? I m death.

With: Max von Sydow, Gunnar Björnstrand, Bengt Ekeroth, Nils Poppe, Bibi Andersson, Gunnel Lindblom, Inga Gill. 20.00 Summer with Monika Summer with Monika from 1953 is not among the best known or most representative works of Ingmar Bergman, but it may be his most influential. The film helped to create the reputation of Sweden as a sexually liberated country. In this romantic drama we get to follow Monika from Stockholm who falls in love with Harry, a young man on holiday. When she becomes pregnant they are forced into a marriage, which begins to fall apart soon after they

take up residence in a cramped little flat. With: Harriet Andersson, Lars Ekborg, Dagmar Ebbesen, Åke Fridell. RADISSON BLU OLD MILL HOTEL, Bulevar vojvode Mišića 15, Belgrade 19.00 The Silence - Workshop and performance in a hotel room. In this workshop, two Serbian actors from G12 HUM will use the film script as a starting point for further research of the silence as an active part of the films of Ingmar Bergman. The hotel room is the stage where movements and the silence will be further explored by the actors who will interact with the audience. The Silence is a 1963 Swedish drama film written and directed by Ingmar Bergman. The plot focuses on two sisters, the younger a sensuous woman with a young son, the elder more intellectually oriented and seriously ill, and their tense relationship as they travel toward home through a fictional Central European country on the brink of war. Actors: Milan Jovanović i Maja Atanasijević. 20.00 Performance - Liv Ullman, the interview and the love story This performance will portray Liv Ullman, the muse of Ingmar Bergman, giving an interview to the Yugoslav journalist Dragan Babić. Talking about her films and her relation to Ingmar Bergman, Liv Ullman shows a broad spectrum of emotions. In a moment of silence the love story between the two, is said to have begun. Actors: Milan Jovanović i Maja Atanasijević. SUNDAY, 21 OCTOBER BELGRADE PHILHARMONICS, Studentski trg 11, Belgrade 15.00-19.00 Masterclass for young musicians and video artists (by invitation), held by Matti Bye. This masterclass - workshop is designed for young film artists,

musicians, composers and sound designers and addresses the connection between film, music and improvisation. The workshop will include techniques of improvisation and introduce a specific understanding of silent movies. 20.00 Concert by Matti Bye Matti Bye is the composer of the music in Bergman s film The Last Gasp, when he worked with Bergman himself. With his Ensemble Bye works in the field of musical improvisation and performs all over the world. At his Belgrade concert, Matti will perform some of his most successful compositions as well as parts of his new album, released in 2018. Until now, Bye has been best known as one of Sweden s most sought-after film composers, working on scores not only for contemporary but also vintage silent movies. In 2014 he received two of the three nominations for Best Original Music Award at Sweden s prestigious Guldbaggen. Though Sweden s Matti Bye was born in 1966, it sometimes seems as though the renowned musician and film soundtrack composer has spent his entire existence living in a different era. When it comes to Matti Bye, one soon learns, time soon ceases to mean anything. His music offers a deeply atmospheric, affecting experience, seeped in nostalgia and yet thrillingly contemporary. At its heart lie profoundly emotive, luminous melodies as substantial as the equipment and Bye s world is definitely an analogue one that he uses to capture them. 18.00 The Bergman Island In the film he is eighty-five years old, having spent more than sixty of those years directing. Now, for the first time, he shows us his world on the desolate and mysterious Baltic island of Fårö. Viewers get to step through the blue gate that bears the notice - in Swedish, of course - "Private Area. Beware of Dog". No dog has lived there, though, since Liv Ullmann's dachshund left the place over thirty years ago. But that text says that here

lives a man who wants to be left alone. A man whose only company is the sea and his own demons. Director: Marie Nyreröd Cinematography: Arne Carlsson 20.00 Fanny and Alexander Fanny and Alexander is a 1982 historical period drama film written and directed by Ingmar Bergman. Bergman himself described the production as the funniest, but also the biggest and most challenging. The film is a story about the desire to stay in the magical childhood and keeping the responsible adult world at distance. In total there were 51 characters in the role list, the most expensive production at the time and also the longest. With: Pernilla Allwin, Bertil Guwe, Jarl Kulle, Allan Edwall, Eva Fröling, Jan Malmsjö, Erland Josephson, Börje Ahlstedt, Christina Schollin, Harriet Andersson, Gunn Wållgren, Pernilla August.

MONDAY, 22 OCTOBER 19.00 The Last Gasp, watch the film together with the music composer Matti Bye This film was originally a one-act stage play, later filmed for television. The Last Gasp from 1995 portrays a meeting at the Swedish Film Industry headquarters between the former director Georg van Klercker and the businessman behind Swedish Film Industry, Director Charles Magnusson. A drunk and bitter Klercher brags about old movies but the most important question for him is if he cannot get a chance to make a new movie? With: Ingvar Kjellson, Björn Granath, Anna von Rosen Score: Matti Bye 20.00 Roundtable Film, music and in between - by Matti Bye, Composer Moderator: Ivan Velisavljević Participants: Matti Bye, Ana Krstajić, Maša Seničić, Igor Stanojević Matti Bye is the composer of the music in Bergman s film The Last Gasp. Bye will moderate an open discussion with experts within film and music, that will seek answers to the question whether a film without music, could be film, and how would that be? The topic film, music and in between relates to Bergman s films and go broader into the relation between music and film. The film The Last Gast and the panel Film, music and in between have been arranged by KC Grad. Matti Bye is a Swedish Pianist and Composer. Bye has composed music for over 30 films and TV series as well as additional scores for Theatre and Dance pieces. In 2014 Bye was nominated twice at Sweden s Guldbagge Awards and in 2009 he won a Gudbagge in 2009 for the film Everlasting Moments.

TUESDAY, 23 OCTOBER 19.00 Public Reading of The Best Intentions with live music by Mattie Bye The Best Intentions is a 1992 Swedish drama film directed by Billie August and written by Ingmar Bergman. It is semi-autobiographical, telling the story of the complex relationship between Bergman s parents. The film documents the courtship and the difficult early years of their marriage, until the point when Anna becomes pregnant with their second son, who corresponds to Ingmar himself. The film won the Palme d Or at the 45 Cannes Film Festival. This multimedia performance will include four actors: Bojan Žirović, Katarina Dimitrijević, Marija Opsenica, Željko Maksimović i Katarina Martinović, kao i VJ Marija Kovačina. Director: Ana Konstantinović Adaptation: Tamara Baračkov Scenography: Višnja Vujović SATURDAY, 3 NOVEMBER Saturday 3 November CITY THEATRE IN BEČEJ, Gerberova 2, Bečej 20.00 Scenes From a Marriage Premiere of Scenes from a marriage in Bečej. Scenes from a Marriage is a 1973 Swedish Television miniseries written and directed by Ingmar Bergman. Bergman's teleplay draws on his own experiences, including his relationship with Ullmann. It has been adapted to a theatrical version and performed in theatres throughout the world. The story explores the disintegration of the marriage between Marianne, a family lawyer specializing in divorce, and Johan, spanning a period of 10 years. The film is famous for its perceived influence on rising divorce rates in Europe.

The premiere in Bečej will be followed by a tour in other Serbian cities throughout 2019. Actors: Tamara Krcunović, Miloš Timotijević Scenography and costume: Dragana Ognjenović Director: Ana Tomović Producer: Tamara Krcunović Assistant producers: Olivera Kecojević i Ljubomir Dorontić 7-12 NOVEMBER, 2018. 14th Free Zone Film Festival, Belgrade, Novi Sad and Niš, taking place in nine cinemas A Documentary: Bergman-A Year in a Life by Jane Magnusson Jane Magnusson s documentary Bergman- A Year in a Life, a portrait of Ingmar Bergman in the pivotal year of 1957 (though it covers his entire life and career), is a hones and overflowing portrait of Bergman as a film artist. It captures Bergman as the tender and prickly, effusive and demon-driven, tyrannical and half-crazy celebrity-genius he was: a man so consumed by work, and by his obsessive relationships with women, that he seemed to be carrying on three lives at once.
