2018-19 Jackson High School Band Syllabus Mrs. Michele M. Monigold mnm2jc@jackson.sparcc.org 330-834-4553 I. Course Description, Objectives and Fees Band (marching and concert) is a full-year educational course that combines classroom music education with musical performance opportunities. The prime objective of the band is to play independently and in an ensemble while demonstrating technical and stylistic accuracy and musical expressiveness. Performance is a key component of this class. Students must meet rehearsal and performance requirements of this course. Band camp is a required activity that costs approximately $225. Uniform fees are approximately $100. Jackson Band Boosters offer many fundraising opportunities and if a family has financial difficulty, PLEASE NOTIFY A DIRECTOR. We will be happy to find assistance for you and/or set up a payment plan. Please do not let financial difficulties keep your child from participating! II. Discipline Jackson High School handbook rules apply during all band activities (summer and outside of the school day included). III. Course Requirements and Grading Policy Summer Rehearsals In order to keep after school rehearsals at a minimum once school starts, Jackson High School Band rehearses for 3 weeks in July including 2 weeks at JHS and 1 week of REQUIRED band camp at University of Mount Union. This is followed by a few rehearsals in August prior to the start of school and the Hall of Fame Grand Parade performance. All students are expected to attend summer rehearsals and performances. The director must be notified in advance to determine if a student is excused from any summer rehearsals or performances including band camp. Percussionists will audition for instrument placement in the Spring and will have extra summer rehearsals scheduled at the end of the school year. Grading Scale Jackson High School grading scale will be in effect - please refer to the school handbook. Grades will be 85% Product - 15% Process

Product grades include attendance and participation at all required rehearsals and performances as well as music memorization (marching band season), marching fundamentals, and any written tests/quizzes. Music memorization testing takes place outside of rehearsal time. Process grades include music enrichment assignments, sectionals, and any written assignments given throughout the year. Absence from rehearsals/performances The Jackson Band Staff works diligently to make sure that students are able to participate in many activities during their time in high school. We must be notified of any schedule conflicts as far in advance as possible so that we may work to find a resolution. Unexcused absence from a rehearsal or performance will result in lowered grade in that area and may result in change in performance status (change in chair placement, change in ensemble, change in performance eligibility). No make-up assignments are given for unexcused absences. Excused absence from a performance will result in a make-up assignment being given to the student. A director must be notified as soon as possible. Examples of excused absences are: severe illness, death in the family, participation in a school event that has been excused by the band directors in advance. 2018-19 FOOTBALL GAMES AND BAND SHOWS ****Return times are estimated and subject to change depending on length of event. Successful demonstration of at least 8 out of 12 marching fundamentals - observed during rehearsals by a director. 3. Successful demonstration of drill execution during rehearsal. Students who have not met these requirements will be on alternate status and are expected to attend all rehearsals and performances. It is our sincere hope that every student will work to earn their spot on the performance field - there is a spot for everyone! Majorette/mascot Jackson Band students in good standing may audition for majorette/mascot after having marched one year without ever being placed on alternate status. Audition requirements must be met.

V. Concert Season At the completion of marching season, all students will complete a required live audition with a director for concert band placement. The audition involves a product grade section as well as sight reading and advanced prepared work. The decision of the directors is final. Students not riding a bus to or from an event must notify the director in writing with a note signed by their parent. Some events, including solo and ensemble, jazz, and steel band performances, will require students to provide their own transportation. VIII. Trips Jackson High School band typically travels every other year. These trips are NOT required and all expenses are paid for by the individual student. Students must be a member in good standing with the band to be eligible for trips. Any student with discipline concerns may have travel opportunities revoked including a loss of trip payment. Any student with severe discipline concerns while on a trip may be sent home at parent expense. IX.
