Currently the default value i unblocked. uer have been encouraged to ue the blocked mode but job which needlely run all day till occur. Since we have been able to reduce the real running time of a pecific job from 15 hour to 6 minute (with a correponding drop in PP time) with the ue of FB, we have
arc.i:l, 1971 ote & Comment page 3 decided to et the default mode a blocked in order to trongly encourage the ue of FB. hi change will be announced in the SYSS OS when a pecific date ha been etablihed. Alo, current problem with FB will be corrected prior to the change. Uer who have tape written in unblocked binary (from Fortran) will dicover that their job will ceae working when thi change i made. t will be neceary for them to include the FB call to obtain correct execution of their job. We hope that thee uer will uffer the inconvenience in light of the fact that turnaround i greatly hindered by a job which run for 15 hour. (A mot extreme cae, we realize.) We do ugget that uer affected watch the SYSS OS for announcement on the exact date for change to ave themelve the frutration of loing time on run. Better yet, all affected job hould be altered to exprely et the blocking factor. Decription of FB he calling equence i CALL FB(,,RRAY) i the blocking flag indicator. f =l, the blocking option i elected. f =O, the file() will not be blocked. arch, 1971 ote & Comment page..=;?qusos? Quetion: Anwer: Why mut ubmit a "tape requet lip" with my job? o prevent error and to expedite ervice. originally, the purpoe of the "ape Requet Slip" wa to ait the operator in ditinguihing tape job from non-tape job when reading job in at the card reader. he operating ytem now handle tape job cheduling but the "ape Requet Slip" i till very neceary for efficient operation. here have been many change in the pat four year: new equipment, remote terminal, new operating ytem, and expanded uer ervice. During thi period the number of job run each day ha increaed from a few dozen to everal thouand. Correpondingly, the number of magnetic tape requeted and aigned ha rien from perhap le than ten a day to more than 5 on a recent buy day. We now have o many tape in torage that there i no pace for them in the computer room. ape are tored outide the computer room and only frequently ued tape are kept in an XPRSS tape rack in the computer room. he ape Librarian at Lauderdale ue the "tape requet lip" when deciding which tape are ued frequently enough to warrant torage in the XPRSS rack. he Librarian alo ue the "tape requet lip" to bring tape from torage o that they will be immediately available when the job requeting the tape i run. "ape requet lip" are vital for tranient tape (). he ape Librarian trie to return tranient tape with the deck and output but if the job hould abort without requeting tape, the tape may be left in the computer room if the "requet lip" i miing or i not checked. he "requet lip" ha prevented many tape from being lot or unnecearily delayed in returning. he Operator alo ue the "requet lip" to peed ervice. h~ "requeat lip" permit the Operator to leave a tape mounted on or near a tape drive if it i to be ued again or if it i ued frequently. he Operator alo ue the "requet lip" to check the tatu of tape job in the ytem. he operator ue the "tape requet lip" to protect the inte:~.r i. i:y of uer tape. Some uer have reported that in the _t.:.':'o,-,.,,..,j of filling out their "requet lip", they have caught t..lv :t~--:,-;j.ve requeting the wrong tape. ven though tcp e are oil::.:.'l aigned when there i a mall dicrepancy bet;.r':!en th ~ "r~' :' 'et lip" and the "requet ~", the Op..t.:..tor may, <?.:;::. :~ doe, either iue a comment to the job or drop the job ii there i a reaonable doubt a to whether the correct tape ha been requeted.
arch, 1971 ote & comment page 6 meedle to ay, without "tape requet lip", multiple tape job or multi-reel tape job could not be run, ince the Operator would not know which tape to mount in what order. Conider, for example or "if nd of ape (O), mount S_" "at PAUS, mount S_" ha... tape requet lip" may alo be ued to communicate to the Operator uch pecial intruction and requet a "Do ot ount on Unit 5 11 or "f WP unrecovered, Drop Job". n concluion, we would remind you that tape aignment are made by the Operator. He mut match the tape number and name found on the "requet lip" to the tape number and name.found on the label of the reel. Any procedure that aid thi operation i important. When filling out the next "tape requet lip", remember that thoe few econd will help u continue our near perfect record for correct tape aignment without needle delay or penalty. Alo remember that operating procedure are continually being reviewed. f you are aware of change that will improve overall ervice, pleae end your uggetion to the Operation Supervior, Univerity Computer Center, Room 227 xperimental ngineering.
