As kids break out their new backpacks and school supplies, think about breaking out your library. If you took the summer off and didn t visit us, please come back, and if you have been meaning to stop in, please do. Our excellent library staff members are here and ready to help. Fall means that publishers are printing new books from many of their A List authors, so you can look forward to new titles from Robin Cook, James Patterson, John Grisham, Debbie Macomber, and many others. Need books with larger print? We are continually adding new titles to our large print collections. Not so crazy about reading a book? How about listening to one? We offer audio books as well as downloadable audio books. If you like your books in digital form, we can help you with that, too. E-books can be downloaded through our website. If you d rather listen to music, don t forget that with your Round Lake Library card, you can download three titles per week from the entire SONY playlist. Just click on the Freegal icon on the Library s homepage. Want to learn something new or brush up on your skills? We offer computer tutorials on the topic of your choice: creating an email account; searching for job opportunities online; using Microsoft Word or Excel; or learning about social media, like Facebook. Call today to set up an appointment. The library is also pleased to offer RocketLanguages, where patrons can have 62 hours of instruction, in 11 different languages (including American Sign Language.) You can learn to knit or bring a project along to the Knitting Club which meets monthly. So as you see kids boarding buses for school, think about how and what you d like to do or learn. We are your library and we are here for you!

Page 5 BANNED BOOKS WEEK September 26-October 1 Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of books across the United States. Intellectual freedom the freedom to access information and express ideas, even if the information and ideas might be considered unorthodox or unpopular provides the foundation for Banned Books Week. It stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints for all who wish to read and access them. The books featured during Banned Books Week have been targets of attempted bannings. Fortunately, while some books were banned or restricted, in a majority of cases the books were not banned, all thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, booksellers, and members of the community to retain the books in the library collections. Imagine how many more books might be challenged and possibly banned or restricted if librarians, teachers, and booksellers across the country did not use Banned Books Week each year to teach the importance of our First Amendment rights and the power of literature, and to draw attention to the danger that exists when restraints are imposed on the availability of information in a free society. American Library Association Banned Books Make Great Movies The Adventures of Huck Finn Thursday, September 29th at 6pm at Clark House Join us to watch this great Disney film, starring Elijah Wood, based on one of the most banned books in the United States! Borrow a Banned Book Borrow something from our displays of banned books! You ll be surprised at what s on the shelf, and why they were banned. From children s books to young adult fiction, from literary classics to new novels there s something for everyone in our Banned Book Collection. Banned Books Read-Aloud Tuesday, September 27th at 6pm Join us for a Banned Book Read-aloud, featuring local celebrities, from 6-8pm at the Malta Branch. Readers will choose their own selection from books which have been banned. Come for the whole time or drop in for a few minutes. Celebrate the freedom to read!
