January 29, 2018 FYI Slate Hill Student Newspaper Hats and Gloves are Important By: Abby C. Website Wiz Written by Jo M. Guess what There s snow. And that means hats, gloves/mittens, coats need to be put on. Students are coming to school without hats and gloves. And that is not okay. Students have very sensitive skin. According to www.businessinsider.com, a temperature of 0 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind speed of 15 mph creates a wind chill temperature of -19 degrees Fahrenheit. Under these conditions frostbite can occur in just 30 minutes. That means that if you don t have Gloves on or even a hat you could get frostbite. Also it states on https://www.urmc.rochester.edu that Children lose proportionally more heat through their heads. Hoods and hats are more important to children because of this. Now you see, hats and gloves are very important to children s health. So please bring a hat and gloves to school and wear them every time you are outside at all times. Hello students of Slate Hill! Best Popcorn Place Ever! (Seriously) By: Hannah Houghtaling Library News! By Ms. Kochensparger Hello, Slate Hill Stars!!! There are a lot of exciting things happening in the library, so I thought I would keep you posted here! Exciting thing #1: BOOK FAIR!!! If you haven t been to this place, you need to give it a try. It s called Al s Delicious Popcorn, at 1500 Bethel Road Columbus OH 43220. It is a family business where they make every flavor possible for popcorn. No joke. They have pizza, Buffalo sauce, vanilla bean, jelly bean, jalapeno, caramel, cheddar cheese, Oreo, strawberry, blueberry, bubble gum, garbage (that s where they mix together a bunch of different flavors of popcorn (really good)), and much, much more. They also have giant size bags. Extra small, small, medium, large, extra large, and get this, extra, extra large. And, yes there s more, they don t let their resources go to waste. They use the unpopped kernels to make completely free bird food. They can deliver it too. Give Al s popcorn a try. You will thank me for this. We are having another book fair very soon!! It is February 5-9, and I hope you can come!!! I always think it is fun to look at all of the new books, even if I don t end up buying any. And if you see some books that you want to read but don t get the chance to buy, you should recommend them for the library, so that I know that kids want to read them and I should get them so you can check them out! Exciting thing #2: AUDIOBOOKS!!! Second grade and up are welcome to check out any of the audiobooks that we have in the library now! Most of them are books on CD, but some of them are Playaways, which means you can just put in some headphones and listen to them wherever! I am so excited to have audiobooks in our library because I listen to audiobooks in my car a lot! I hope you enjoy them! Exciting thing #3: Cursive contest!! Any student that wants to practice their cursive writing can enter this contest! Every two weeks I will put up a new contest entry (outside the library door, the one by the sixth grade rooms), where I write a silly or weird sentence in cursive, and you can take it home or take it to study hall to practice writing it too! Anyone who turns in their finished cursive practice sheet will be entered in a prize drawing! Good luck!

Logan With the Scoop (And I m Not Talking About Ice Cream!) By Logan McKim Recently I have been a victim of bullying and I think it is an issue that is widespread around the world. Now here is what the kids in Newspaper Club think. Me: What do you think about bullying? Abby: I don t think it s a good thing because other people should not be putting others down. Me: How do you think bullying affects others? Jo: I think it affects others physically and powerfully through emotion. Me: As a teacher, have you yourself had to help with bullying in the classroom? Ms. Kochensparger: Unfortunately, yes. I wish that kids were nicer to each other. Me: Why do you think kids bully? Brooklyn: Because they are hurt themselves and want to take their fury out on others. Me: Have you ever been bullied? Hannah: Yes I have, and I know why. Typically kids have their own problems and bullying is the only way they feel better about themselves. Me: Have you ever stood up to bullying? Riley: I haven't ever seen bullying except when it is just me. Thanks for reading! One last thing, never bully, and always help others who have been.

The Purrfect Gift For A 4 th Grader Written by Evelyn Allen Just Joking! Written by Jo M. P.S. you might want to read these a few times before you get them. I got some requests to do this so here you go! Did you know Christmas is on its way (in a while)? In my opinion, Tyler Tiger is the best gift for a fourth grader. First of all, it acts like a real tiger! It purrs, walks, talks, and yawns. But those are not all the actions it has! Your child will be fascinated by seeing such a thing move! Your child will be so amazed that there will be less time to fight with siblings, and by that I mean, if you have more than one child, they may fight. Tyler Tiger can really entertain your child. Tyler Tiger is adorable. It s kind of like a real-life pet! Tyler Tiger can growl whenever it is not getting attention, but it does not want to hurt your children like a real tiger. In conclusion, what do you think of Tyler Tiger? If I were a parent, I would get my kid Tyler Tiger. Thank you for all the people who suggested this, say this is a shout out. Did you hear about the guy whose left side got chopped off? He s all right now. Whiteboards are remarkable! Never give your uncle an anteater! A golf ball is a golf ball no matter how you putt it. Thank you for checking me out and laughing out loud!

Arts and Entertainment Section: The Two Sisters A Play Written by Jo Majors Narrator: Once upon a time in a faraway land, there was a queen who had two twin girls. Queen: Oh how I adore my beautiful children! They mean the world to me! Both girls: (do a baby giggle) Narrator: The queen was super happy but one night there was a maid in the castle who wished to have a child. Maid: Oh how I wish for a child to raise! Narrator: Little did she know the king's brother had an idea. The idea is that he and the maid will take one of the king's children because he is mad he did not get to be the king, so they planned the scheme. King s brother: So the plan is tomorrow night we take one of the children and become the child s parents? Maybelle (the Maid) : Right! Narrator: As the night falls they run their scheme! (They act a dramatic scene with no sound and get the child.) Jack (King s brother): Yes we have got her! Narrator: Many years pass and the family forgets they had another child and grow happy once more! Rose (the stolen daughter): Mom, Maybelle: Yes dear? Rose: Where did I come from? Maybelle: Me, sweetie! We ve talked about this! Rose: I know but really. Maybelle: Ok your real mother is (whispers)...the queen. Rose: THE WHAT!! Maybelle: Yes we stole you from your parents. Rose: And you re telling me this now?! Maybelle: Yes, because we were trying to keep you safe sweetie.

Rose: Safe?! Safe from WHAT?!?! Mom, you will see what happens next. Narrator: That night Rose packed her bags and left. Maybelle: Okay Rose time to wake up...rose?!...rose?!?!?!?! Jack: What is going on Maybelle?! Maybelle: Rose got mad and ran away or that's what I think. Jack: Oh look there is a note written on her pillow. (Jack reads note and Maybelle peeks over to read it too) Jack: The note says Maybelle: Hi parents who rob people. Jack: I have run to a place. Maybelle: I'm not gonna tell you where it is so you will not take me again. Jack: From your NOT daughter, Maybelle: Rose. Jack: She ran away... Jack: Why did we take her? We were so wrong. Maybelle: We must find her before they lock her up. Narrator: Later at the castle... Queen: Oh how you are my favorite and so are you James. King: Yes, Destiny, you are our everything!! Destiny: And I love you guys too. Narrator: When Rose finds the village.. Rose: There is the the village I was born in! Narrator: As the night rose, Rose and Destiny both went to sleep thinking they had a sister. Rose: YAWN!! Okay, time to go find my sister. (She wakes up to people screaming and looks out the window and Rose is being attacked)

Rose: NO!!! YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME!! NO!!!! Mob Leader: I SAY WE THROW HER IN THE MAIN DUNGEON!!! All the other mob: YEAH!!! (She has hands behind her back and she is being thrown in the dungeon) Guard: Hehe, this is what you get for saying you've been STOLEN!! Rose: I WAS stolen! Just ask the old maid or Jack, the King s brother! Guard: Yeah, like we ll believe you, liar! (Guard throws her in jail and Rose grabs the bars) Rose: You will be sorry Guard: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, tell that to the queen. Rose: Wait the queen is coming here!?!? Guard: You bet! Rose: (whispers) Yes! Narrator: Meanwhile, the queen gets the note. Queen: Oh so there is a teenager thinking she is our daughter!! Ugh, kids these days, am I right?! Destiney: Mom, I think you do have another daughter. Queen: What are you talking about!?! Destiny: Follow me. Narrator: Destiny brings her mom to a place in the library that she hasn't seen in fourteen years...

Destiny: Here, in this book you have two children. One has brown hair and the other has purple, just like the girl who was thrown in prison. Does that girl holding the babies have a real crown, or is it made out of paper!! Queen: You're right! Let's get to the dungeon quick! (They get to the dungeon.) Queen: STOP SHE IS INNOCENT!!!! Narrator: As the two fourteen year old girls meet each other eye to eye Rose knows how Destiny has lived and Destiny knows how Rose has lived and when the guard opens the smooth steel door they run to meet each other for the first time. When they were first born Rose was stolen and never before got to meet Destiny, and Destiny never got to meet Rose so at fourteen years old they finally meet and become one happy family once more. Narrator: Two years later. Destiny: I can t believe we have a new baby brother. Rose: Yeah I hope he doesn't get forgotten about too. (Both girls laugh.) Destiny: Welcome to the kingdom...robert. Narrator: We come to an end with amazing news and the whole entire family live happily ever after. Well, of course, Maybelle and Jack get thrown in prison, but the whole royal family lives happy ever after. (Everyone comes onstage and bows and concludes.)
