I m s excited t embark n this jurney with yu. Music is bth an individual and grup activity and every member is critical t ur success. While hard wrk and daily practice is an imprtant part f any musician s life, being in band and rchestra and is als fun. We will perfrm, witness prfessinal musicians in cncert, march in the annual Memrial Day Parade (rchestra = flags and drums) and much mre. Students shuld expect t fcus n instrument prficiency, music literacy and musical understanding. WHAT YOU NEED: Students shuld always bring the fllwing items with them t band and rchestra class: 1.) A Pencil 2.) Yur Music Binder (students need t bring a binder. One inch is a gd size but it can be bigger) 3.) Yur music and methd bk (see belw fr methd bk details) 4.) Yur instrument 5.) Any accessries yu need fr yur instrument (aka reeds, valve il, neckstrap, etc.) PERFORMANCES: Participating in music classes at Dearbrn STEM includes a variety f pprtunities fr students t perfrm. At times, students will be asked t play sl in frnt f the class. While this may be nerve-wracking fr sme individuals, it s a necessity f the perfrming arts wrld and fr accurate student assessment. We may als perfrm fr family and friends, cmmunity members and ur peers. Students are REQUIRED t attend all perfrmances. If fr sme reasn a student cannt attend a cncert, they must let Mrs. Hatrick knw BEFORE the cncert. Students wh miss cncerts will be asked t play the cncert music fr a test. Students are graded based n demnstratin f prgress n instrument. Everyne learns music at a different pace and students have a variety f levels f experience. As lng as students are shwing grwth and effrt they will get a gd grade. HOW OFTEN SHOULD A STUDENT PRACTICE? Students shuld practice 15-45 minutes a day, 5 days a week. While this isn t always realistic, students will be successful n their instruments if they attempt this rutine. We will discuss rehearsal techniques in class. METHOD BOOKS: Students in band and rchestra will be wrking ut f a methd bk thrughut the year. While there will be a few cpies fr students t use while in the classrm, students shuld purchase a cpy fr themselves t use at hme while practicing. RENTING AND PURCHASING INSTRUMENTS: Students will be assigned a schl-wned instrument if ne is available. Fr the mst part, this shuld nt be an issue thugh supplies are limited. Nte that the schl instruments have been used by many ther students fr many years and may nt lk pretty but are functining and sund gd. If a student is passinate abut music and knws they will play an instrument in high schl renting r purchasing their wn instrument is highly recmmended. 4

These instruments are generally f extremely pr quality, break easily and mst repair cmpanies will nt fix them nce in disrepair. Investing in a quality instrument ensures yur student will be able t perfrm fr the lng term. A quality instrument will retain its value ver time (if taken care f) and if at sme pint yur student is nt interested in participating in band r rchestra, yu can sell it and get a prtin f yur investment back. A NOTE ON USED INSTRUMENTS : Used instruments are anther great ptin. REPAIR OPTIONS: If an instrument requires repair and I can fix it, I will. If nt, please take yur instrument t ne f the lcal shps mentined abve, r t the stre yu purchased yur instrument frm fr repair. DO NOT attempt t repair instruments yurself at hme r in the classrm. This can cause serius damage t yur instrument resulting in a large repair bill. All effrts will be made t allw students t use a schl instrument during the time their instrument is in fr repair. PRACTICE TIPS: Practice Tips Practice a little every day. It is better t practice 15 minutes five times a week than t practice an hur and 15 minutes ne time in the week. Use a metrnme. A metrnme makes a click fr each beat. Yu can use it t begin practicing a scale r passage slwly then gradually increase the speed. There are dzens f metrnme apps. Metrnme Beats (free) wrks well and has a feature where yu can quickly and simply add 5 beats per minute during yur practice. Metrnme Plus ($1.99) has been called the best metrnme app. Set challenging yet attainable gals Islate difficult passages and practice them slwly (Use yur metrnme) It is better t play slw and accurate than fast and slppy Stay Psitive! Nt everything will be easy. In fact, if yu are practicing crrectly, yu are intentinally practicing the music that is nt easy. G slw and play accurate. If yu get frustrated, take a break and cme back t it anther time. 5
