RENTING AND PURCHASING INSTRUMENTS: Students will be assigned a schl-wned instrument if ne is available. Fr the mst part, this shuld nt be an issue thugh supplies are limited. Nte that the schl instruments have been used by many ther students fr many years and may nt lk pretty but are functining and sund gd. If a student is passinate abut music and knws they will play an instrument in high schl renting r purchasing their wn instrument is highly recmmended. 4

SEVERAL MUSIC COMPANIES ARE AVAILABLE FROM WHICH WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU RENT INSTRUMENTS: Shar Check ut www.sharmusic.cm fr mre inf and lcatins A&R Music 3924 Frt St, Lincln Pk, MI 48146 (313) 381-2274 Marshall Music C. 6500 Allen Rd Allen Park, MI (313) 383-5560 A NOTE ON CHEAP INSTRUMENTS: Instruments fund n Amazn, Cstc and Walmart websites that are sld at a cnsiderably cheaper price than thse fund at a reputable instrument dealer may seem appealing but are nt recmmended. These instruments are generally f extremely pr quality, break easily and mst repair cmpanies will nt fix them nce in disrepair. Investing in a quality instrument ensures yur student will be able t perfrm fr the lng term. A quality instrument will retain its value ver time (if taken care f) and if at sme pint yur student is nt interested in participating in band r rchestra, yu can sell it and get a prtin f yur investment back. A NOTE ON USED INSTRUMENTS : Used instruments are anther great ptin. If yu dn t have knwledge f what brands r specific qualities yu shuld be lking fr, Mrs. Hatrick is happy t help walk yu thrugh the prcess. Give her a call, text r email. REPAIR OPTIONS: If an instrument requires repair and I can fix it, I will. If nt, please take yur instrument t ne f the lcal shps mentined abve, r t the stre yu purchased yur instrument frm fr repair. DO NOT attempt t repair instruments yurself at hme r in the classrm. This can cause serius damage t yur instrument resulting in a large repair bill. All effrts will be made t allw students t use a schl instrument during the time their instrument is in fr repair. PRACTICE TIPS: Practice Tips Practice a little every day. It is better t practice 15 minutes five times a week than t practice an hur and 15 minutes ne time in the week. Use a metrnme. A metrnme makes a click fr each beat. Yu can use it t begin practicing a scale r passage slwly then gradually increase the speed. There are dzens f metrnme apps. Metrnme Beats (free) wrks well and has a feature where yu can quickly and simply add 5 beats per minute during yur practice. Metrnme Plus ($1.99) has been called the best metrnme app. Set challenging yet attainable gals Islate difficult passages and practice them slwly (Use yur metrnme) It is better t play slw and accurate than fast and slppy Stay Psitive! Nt everything will be easy. In fact, if yu are practicing crrectly, yu are intentinally practicing the music that is nt easy. G slw and play accurate. If yu get frustrated, take a break and cme back t it anther time. 5

Always end yur practice by playing smething fun that yu enjy playing. Play fr thers as ften as pssible; family, friends, dg r cat Blg help The Music Prgram at STEM has an active blg. This is the primary frm f cmmunicatin that I will use during the curse f the schl year.
