Ths year's wnner was Davd Daz for the book "Smoky Nght.". "Smoky Nght" s the story of a boy, hs cat and hs mother. t takes place durng a bg-cty rot. Cats and the rots brng neghbors from dfferent backgrounds together. When Davd Daz was n the frst grade, he was asked to fll n the letters for the word "nose." He also drew a nose and the face. t was at that moment he decded to become an artst. Davd grew up n Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He studed at the Art nsttute there. Then he moved to Calforna, where he now lves. "Smoky Nght" s the frst chldren's book Davd Daz has llustrated. However, he s not new to the feld of art. For the past 15 years, he has run a very busy studo. Davd Daz wth hs wfe, Cecela, and ther three chldren son Jercho, 12; son Arel, 5; and daughter Gabrelle, 3. ' t took Davd Daz about a year to fnsh "Smoky Nght." Durng that tme he was workng on dozens of other thngs. " work wth ad agences, desgn studos, magaznes and newspapers," he told us. Hs studo s n hs home, but he s plannng to get another place soon. He has one assstant who. helps hm wth the blls and flng. Hs advce to kds who want to become artsts: "Begn to look at as much art as possble. Begn to draw as much as possble. The more you draw, the better you are.
