A word from our Chairman Welcome to this our first concert for 2005, and thank you for your support. If this is your first time in our audience, and you would like to get more information about future choir events, please take the time to fill out a form (available in the foyer) or send me an email with your contact details, and we will be pleased to add you to our mailing list. As you can tell from the slightly cheeky title Purcell & Pizza! we are trying new things all the time to make our mark on the very busy Brisbane music scene. This evening s entertainment represents a change from our usual format. With the concert moved to 6pm, we decided that something more substantial than afternoon tea was required hence the pizza and other goodies. Please purchase supper vouchers in the foyer at interval to avoid delays downstairs later. The Choir has a busy year ahead. On Saturday July 16 th we will host a From Scratch event, as we have done with great success for the past two years. The work for this year is Haydn s Nelson Mass, a beautiful work, with lots of interaction between choir and soloists. If you are interested in coming to take part as a singer or to be in the audience, please complete the booking form or send an email. All singers are welcome and music and rehearsal CDs are available now. You can find out more on our web site, and read the enthusiastic feedback from last year s participants. St Andrew s building is 100 years old this year. To celebrate the centenary we will be joining with the Sanctuary Choir, the Sinfonia of St Andrew s, and soloists Adele Nisbet, Meg Russell-Hines, Steven Moore and Manfred Pohlenz to present Mendelssohn s Hymn of Praise and Five Mystical Songs by Vaughan Williams on August 21 st. Our Christmas concert will round out the year on December 4 th, with a preview at Southport Uniting Church one week earlier. As you might be aware, the Choir is auditioning one conductor per season in our search for a new permanent Musical Director. Debra Shearer-Dirié is the final candidate, and we have greatly enjoyed making music with her over this first season of 2005. A selection and permanent appointment will be announced shortly. I hope you enjoy the music and the pizza! Ian Maurer Chairman - Brisbane Concert Choir Fecit Potentiam Fecit potentiam in brachio suo: dispersit superbos mente cordis sui. Amen. Special Thanks He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy; As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. To all of those who have helped us to make this evening run smoothly, a big thank you for your support and assistance. We couldn t do it without you and truly appreciate your help. 2 11

Ave Maria Ave Maria, gratia plena Dominus tecum. Benedicta tu in mulieribus, Et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus. Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Ora pro nobis peccatoribus Nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen. Hail, Mary, full of grace; the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women; and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, Pray for us sinners Now and at the hour of our death. Amen. A word from St Andrew s Church Beautiful music, grand voices and a beautiful venue all come together to make an excellent concert. St Andrew s Uniting Church welcomes you to this place of worship and we hope you enjoy the talents of the Choir and Sinfonia and the beauty and history of the Church itself. Interval Magnificat Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (Luke I: 46-55) Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (March 8, 1714 December 14, 1788) was a German musician and composer, the second son of Johann Sebastian Bach. A founder of the Classical style, his setting of the Magnificat shows more traces than usual of his father's influence. Magnificat is the Latin name of the canticle of Mary, the mother of Jesus, which she speaks to Elisabeth, the wife of Zechariah. Through these words, Mary reveals to Elisabeth that she is pregnant with the Saviour Jesus. The canticle appears in the Gospel of Luke, 1:46-55. Magnificat Magnificat anima mea Dominum. Et Misericordia Et misericordia ejus a progenie in progenies timentibus eum. And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation. Confiteor unum baptisma in remissionem peccatorem. Et expecto resurrectionem mortuorum. Et vitam venturi saeculi. Amen. I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, Only Son of God. Eternally begotten of the Father. Light from light, true God from true God, Begotten, not made, of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made. who for us men, and for our salvation descended from heaven. And by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary. And was made man. Crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate, suffered, and was buried. And the third day he rose again according to Scriptures. And he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again, with glory, to judge the living and the dead, And his kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, The Lord, and Giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. Who with the Father, and Son together is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. And I believe in one, holy, catholic, and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. And I look for the resurrection of the dead. And the life of the world to come. Amen. 4 9

Programme Come Ye Sons of Art Henry Purcell (Ode for the Birthday of Queen Mary, 1694) Starting in 1689 and reflecting England's love of their Queen Mary, Purcell wrote a birthday ode for her each year. Come Ye Sons of Art, is one of the most beautiful examples of Purcell's art at its most mature. Performed on April 30, 1694, it was the greatest, and sadly, the last of the series. The following year Purcell composed funeral music for the Queen, and soon after Purcell himself died at the age of only 36. Russian by birth, his highly original music was the epitome of modernism. In his long career he regularly produced symphonies, concertos, oratorios and a bewildering variety of choral works. Regarded as one of the towering figures in 20th century art music he died in New York City on April 6, 1971.
