ISOlIEC 9:993(E) Foreword IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) and IEC (the lnternational Electrotechnical Commission) form the specialized system for worldwide standardization. National bodies that are members of IS0 or IEC participate in the development of International Standards through technical committees established by the respective organization to deal with particular fields of technical activity. IS0 and IEC technical committees collaborate in fields of mutual interest. Other international organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with IS0 and IEC, also take part in the work. In the field of information technology, IS0 and IEC have established a joint technical committee, lso/iec JTC. Draft International Standards adopted by the joint technical committee are circulated to national bodies for voting. Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the national bodies casting a vote. International Standard lso/iec 9 was prepared by the European Computer Manufacturers Association (as Standard ECMA-45) and was adopted, under a special fast-track procedure, by Joint Technical Committee lso/iec JTC, Information technology, Sub-Committee, Flex ible magnetic media for digital data interchange, in parallel with its approva by national bodies of IS0 and IEC. Annexes A, B and C form an integral part of this International Standard Annexes D and E are for information only.

INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ISO/IEC 9:993 (E) Information technology - 8 mm wide magnetic tape cartridge for information interchange - Helical scan recording Section : General scope This International Standard specifies the physical and magnetic characteristics of an 8 mm wide magnetic tape cartridge to enable interchangeability of such cartridges. It also provides a format and recording method, thus allowing, together with IS0 00 for Magnetic Tape Labeliing, full data interchange by means of such magnetic tape cartridges. Conformance A magnetic tape cartridge shall be in conformance with this International Standard if it satisfies all mandatory requirements specified herein. The tape requirements shall be satisfied throughout the extent of the tape. 3 Normative references The following standards contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this International Standard. At the time of publication, the editions indicated were valid. Ail standards are subject to revision, and parties to agreements based on this International Standard are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the standards indicated below. Members of IEC and IS0 maintain registers of currently valid International Standards. ISO/R 57: 966, Plastics - Determination of tensile properties. IS0 00: 986, Information processing - File structure and labelling of magnetic tapes for information interchange. IS0 30: 978, Technical drawings - Method of indicating surface texture on drawings. IEC 9: 990, Safety of information Technology Equipment, including Electrical Business Equipment. 4 Definitions For the purpose of this International Standard, the following definitions apply. 4. AC erase: A process of erasure utilizing alternating fields of decaying level. 4. Average Signal Amplitude: The average peak-to-peak value of the signal output of the read head measured over a minimum of,40 mm, exclusive of missing pulses. 4.3 azimuth: The angular deviation, in degrees of arc, of the recorded flux transitions on a track from the line normal to the track centreline. 4.4 back surface: The surface of the tape opposite to the magnetic coating used to record data. 4.5 bit cell: A distance along the track allocated for the recording of a Channel bit. 4.6 byte: An ordered set of bits acted upon as a unit. 4.7 cartridge: A case containing magnetic tape stored on twin reels. 4.8 Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) Character: A character used for error detection.
