Section : Introduction. INSTALLATION OVERVIEW The process of installing the ThingMagic UHF RFID kit can be broken down into four major procedures. A picture of each required major part will be shown for your reference in the relevant sections of this guide..2) Installing the antenna module.3) Assembling and Cabling the RFID Module.4) Mounting the RFID module.5) Testing the installation.2 INSTALLING THE ANTENNA MODULE The RFID antenna module is always required to be located near the print head. In the case of the CL e series, the antenna can be housed in the hollow rectangular compartment (called the antenna cover) located under the paper guide.. Locate the antenna cover. It is directly under the label guide. 2. To remove the antenna cover, remove two panhead screws (see picture) with a phillips-head screwdriver. antenna cover two pan-head screws paper guide 3. Insert the SATO antenna module (part R0704700) into the hollow side of the antenna cover, with the antenna cable oriented to the left side as shown here. 4. Insert four washers (part P4305000) on the four screw points of the antenna cover, and then screw four washer-head screws (part MH9260622) into these screw points to secure the antenna onto the antenna holder. 5. Reinstall the antenna cover into the printer. Make sure that the antenna cable is inserted first. washers Page -2 ThingMagic UHF RFID Module Installation Guide for SATO CL e-series
Section : Introduction.2 INSTALLING THE ANTENNA MODULE (CONT D) 6. Run the antenna cable through the gap in the printer as shown. 7. Install the supplied cable clamp (part CKN-05) to fasten the antenna cable neatly to the printer..3 ASSEMBLING AND CABLING THE RFID MODULE The ThingMagic RFID module is to be mounted in the electronic section of the CL, behind the label printing compartment. To mount the module, you will first locate the square metal plate in the label printing compartment. The plate is a kind of cover that holds an accessory in place behind it. The screws holding this plate will be replaced with longer screws to hold the RFID module.. Remove both side covers of the CL printer to access the circuit boards and label printing compartment. 2. Locate the square metal plate between the ribbon winding shafts in the label printing area. 3. The pan-head screw circled in the picture is to be replaced with a longer screw (part 3JP3008+SW+WL). Section : Introduction.3 ASSEMBLING AND CABLING THE RFID MODULE (CONT D) 4. Locate the Module Bracket (part P2096700) and install 4 spacers (part BSB-2004) to it as shown (use the L-shaped bend as a reference). RFID Module 5. Install the RFID module (part MD3200522) using 4 pan head screws (part 2JP2005+SW+WS). 6. Turn the module bracket over and install the DC-DC converter board (part R0987000) using 3 pan head screws (part 2JP3006+SW+WL). 7. Connect the DC-DC converter board to the RFID module board with the supplied Module Cable (part R09783000) to connector CN4. 8. Next, connect the cable (part R09794000) to the DC-DC convertor board (CN3). Connect the other end of the cable to the main PCB of the printer, at CN20. CN4 DC-DC converter To CN20 of printer PCB 9. Disconnect the cable (part RH77060) from the operation panel and connect it to the DC- DC convertor, at (CN) below the antenna cable (see picture). Op panel CN 0.Connect a cable (part R09795000) to the DC- DC module (CN2) and connect the other end to the operation panel where the cable was removed in Step 9 above. Section : Introduction.4 MOUNTING THE RFID MODULE. Now, mount the assembled RFID module to the printer chassis, on the side where the printer s main PCB is located. Use a Pan Head S Tight Screw (part MH4300622) to mount the top part of the module to a hole in the printer chassis (as shown circled in green). The screw hole is located under the Ribbon Supply Shaft on the label printing side of the printer. 2. To mount the bottom of the RFID module, use a Hexagon Nut (part MT300522) to secure it to the printer. The nut fits over the long screw (circled here in blue) which replaced the original screw of the square metal plate in Step 3 of the previous section. 3. Finally, connect the antenna cable from the SATO antenna module to the connector (circled in red) on the RFID module (see picture). This completes the connection of all cabling harnesses for the RFID module. Connect to antenna cable 4. The picture here shows an overview of the cable paths to and from the RFID module. 5. Perform a test of the RFID module to ensure that it has been connected properly. Connect to antenna cable ThingMagic UHF RFID Module Installation Guide for SATO CL e-series Page -5
Section : Introduction.5 TESTING THE INSTALLATION Before testing the installation, ensure that the print engine firmware version is not earlier than 05A7000A. Otherwise, update the firmware to a suitable version before proceeding with RFID testing and usage.. To confirm that your installation of the RFID is correct, press the LINE button when turning the printer ON. The printer goes into the Advanced Mode. 2. Press the LINE button until the LCD shows RFID MODE. ADVANCED MODE RFID MODE 3. Press the FEED button repeatedly until the screen shows the word READER VERSION. If a set of digits appears below this heading, then the RFID Module has been properly installed. READER VERSION 03.03.00.0 Note: If no numbers appear below READER VERSION, then the installation was not successful. In this case, double-check all cabling connections and the installed firmware version. If necessary, redo the entire installation procedure.
