About The Music: LONG WAY ROM HOME is based on the traditional olk song Sometimes I eel Like A Motherless Child, and the title is taken rom the lyrics. This comosition eatures extreme contrasts in volume, style and instrumental colors, rom the laintive oening layed by a ind quintet to very loud, exlosive brass choir. The iece begins ith solo alto saxohone accomanied by euhonium and tuba, then lute and clarinet. This quintet is used to more times in the iece and rovides a unique sound not commonly heard in the symhonic concert band. Chimes rovide a tolling o the bells eect and should be solidly struck. The temo, marked Slo, sultry should be layed quite reely until measure hich requires a stricter temo. The next section has a metronome range o quarter equals 76 8. The temos you choose should be the ones you, the conductor, are most comortable ith and the temos hich sound the best ith your instrumentation. lease use rubato throughout as you deem it. Some o the more lyrical sections tyically ill be layed a little sloer and the sections ith the brass unctuations, a little aster. or examle, measure 8 should be exactly in temo to emhasize the trilet igures hile measure 0 slos things don ust a little or the lyrical section that ollos. The igure layed by the lutes and irst clarinet in measure 8 is used throughout the iece. Caution your layers to not erk the inal note or to make it too short. A slight decrescendo on the last to eighth notes o that igure ould be more the character and style reerred by the comoser. The driving brass at measure adds a ne dimension to the theme o the olk song and should be very loud and accented. Bring out the descending chromatic line in the lo brass. The quintet returns in measure 5, this time ith the lute having the melody and the tuba reiterating the descending chromatic bass line. A brie rerise o measures 5 occur at measures 59 6; hoever, this time the temo is aster and instead o a crescendo in the last measure there is a decrescendo. The iccolo solo beginning at measure 68 is based on the olk song melody and is accomanied by the horn in a reeated trilet igure and the clarinets, imitating the revious section layed by the cornets/trumets. Check to make sure the horn trilets and the clarinet trilets are all clearly articulated. The brass section builds to a oerul and very loud statement o the various motis used ithin the iece (measures 7 80) hich leads to a oerul melody or the horn section, again accomanied by the trilet moti. The ull brass section returns at measure 87 and eventually builds to Ï beore quickly diminishing to. The olk song ends this dynamic comosition, layed once again by the oening quintet, ith the solo alto saxohone on the melody. Solo horn adds a inal lament, ith to clarinet layers adding an A and D to the octave Gs and the timani laying one inal trilet. Above all, use this iece to shocase the musicality o your ensemble and to eature your irst chair soloists as ell as your brass and oodind choirs.
