Leon Burke Biography Leon Burke III began to dedicate his life to music when he began musical studies at age 12. His instruments were piano and organ but he also sang. By age 16 Burke began conducting orchestras. After attending McBride High School and graduating from John Burroughs School in St. Louis, he entered the Oberlin Conservatory in 1972. Upon graduation with a BM in Composition, he entered the University of Kansas and earned a MM and DMA in Conducting. He has been a Fulbright Fellow in Paraguay. Dr. Burke has served as Conductor/Music Director of the Lawrence Chamber Players, the Hutchinson Symphony, and the McPherson Symphony. He has also been on the faculties of Baker University, Sterling College, Hutchinson Community College, and Webster University. He is the former Music Director of the Alton Symphony. Dr, Burke is Conductor of the University City Symphony Orchestra and Assistant Conductor of the St. Louis Symphony Chorus. He is the Choir Director at Eliot Unitarian Chapel in Kirkwood. Outside of St. Louis he is the Conductor for the Metropolitan Ballet of Topeka and conducts the Belleville Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. He teaches voice as an adjunct faculty member at East Central College in Union, MO and St. Louis University. By day he is an Environmental Consultant working as a Project Manager with United Infrastructure Corporation. Dr. Burke has won the Arts for Life Award for Best Achievement in Musical Direction for his work with the Spotlight Theater s production of Titanic in 2003. Since then, the musicals he has directed for Spotlight Theater (Chicago, Jekyll and Hyde, West Side Story) were honored by Arts for Life by their nomination for Best Musical Production and won him two more nominations for Best Musical Director. In June of 2013 he was Music Director for KTK s production of Little Women and wrote the music for First Run Theater s Spectrum: an evening of eight ten-minute plays. Burke sang the role of Balthazar in Amahl and the Night Visitors with the Midwest Lyric Opera in 2013 and sang a recital at the Sheldon Concert Hall of Broadway music for their Coffee Concert Series, with a return engagement in 2014. Other recent activity includes his presenting a vocal recital as a tribute to Paul Robeson and conducting a concert of American music in the Czech Republic. He has returned as Principal Guest Conductor for the National Orchestra of Paraguay to conduct concerts, and worked with several youth orchestras while in South America. In 2013 he conducted the Nutcracker Ballet with the Metropolitan Ballet of Topeka, and in January 2014 conducted Amahl and the Night Visitors with the Midwest Lyric Opera in Jefferson City. He conducted concerts in Paraguay and Argentina during the summer of 2014.

YM PHONY LIVE AT POWELL HALL Powell Hall 718 North Grand Boulevard St. Louis, MO 63103 314-533-2500 stlsymphony.org December 7, 2011 Search Committee Topeka Symphony Orchestra 2100 SE 29th Street Topeka, KS 66605 To Whom It May Concern: I have known Leon Burke in several capacities since my arrival in St Louis in 2005. He is an extremely talented and well-rounded musician. At the St. Louis Symphony we have used him to conduct rehearsals in preparation for other conductors both with the Symphony and the Youth Orchestra. We have also asked him to conduct concerts with the Symphony and the IN UNISON Chorus. Through these performances he has exhibited strong qualities both as a conductor and a teacher. He has been cover conductor on a number of occasions, and I had a chance to watch him conduct a beautiful rendition of Mozart's Symphony No. 36 with the Orchestra during our audition process for resident conductor. Most recently, Leon sang the basso profundo soloist part in Stravinsky's Les noces for our opening concerts this season. Leon's international conducting career includes repertoire that is varied and demanding for a conductor. I have recommended him on a number of occasions and feel no hesitation in doing so for, in addition to his abilities as a musician, Leon is a fine human being who possesses a grace and understanding which will serve him well in all he does.
