NEXT GENERATION VIDEO NETWORKS Survey Results September 2014 Shaping the Future of Satellite Communications www.newtec.eu Rev.2 09/2014

Introduction Everyone is talking about multiservice networks, automated workflows, hybrid networks and new industry standards (e.g. UHDTV, DVB-S2X). Just buzzwords? With the help of our 3 rd industry survey, we at Newtec were interested in the thoughts of our customers and business partners: n n n In what direction is the industry moving? How is the satellite-terrestrial mix changing? What investment plans are being made as a result? This booklet will provide you with the answers to these questions. We would like to give a big thank you to the 270 participants who completed our 3 rd industry survey, which ran over three weeks in August 2014. 2 Results of this survey are Newtec

Within what time frame will you be implementing DVB-S2X? 8% 23% 14% 1 Already implemented Within 6 months Within 1 year More than a yearʼs time Only as soon as DVB-S2X becomes widely accepted within my market Will not adapt to DVB-S2X in the coming 3 years I don't know 28% Within one year, a quarter of the industry will be using DVB-S2X. 13

What is your most compelling reason to implement DVB-S2X? 13% Reduce costs of bandwidth (reduce cost per channel or reduce overall space segment) I need more throughput in my network 27% I want to launch UHDTV services I donʼt know what the benefits are 7% 1% Reduce the cost of my antenna and RF electronics Improve my service availability without additional cost 11% 2 It becomes mandatory (because of regulations) It is a natural evolution 58% will use DVB-S2X to get higher throughput, to launch UHDTV services or to reduce costs. When do you think you ll be UHDTV ready? 4% 4% Already Within 6 months 27% Within 1 year More than a yearʼs time 2 Only as soon as 4K becomes widely accepted within my market I don't know 29% Will not adapt to 4K in the coming 3 years Only a small percentage is now ready for UHDTV, which will change in over a year s time. 14 Results of this survey are Newtec
