English Exam Name: N o : Ex 1 Feb 2015 Class : Grade 9 (a,b,c,d) Duration : 90min Obj: Tenses/Modals/adj/adv Smoking I-Reading As smokers, we always lie to ourselves, we know what cigarettes are doing to us, but we keep telling ourselves that there is no real danger in smoking. We know that smoking is a cause of cancer and heart diseases, but we also know that these diseases take time to develop, so we keep feeling that we have time, that nothing bad will happen to us, and we always think that bad things always happen to others. But this is very inaccurate, statistics show that 5 million people die every year from tobacco use, so we are putting ourselves in enormous danger and we are killing ourselves slowly. Even when we realise the danger of smoking, it is so difficult to quit smoking. Why is it so hard? This is mainly because of the nicotine in our blood. Nicotine is very addictive, when it enters our bodies, it mixes with our blood, and when we try to stop smoking, we feel a strong crave for cigarettes because our blood will be in great need for nicotine. We have to understand something, success starts in our minds, we have to take a decision, and once a strong decision is taken, taking more positive action becomes much easier. We always hear about people who try to quit smoking and face all kinds of obstacles. Many of these people fail to keep up with their decision and give up, while many others carry on and succeed in getting rid of this filthy habit. An example of someone who managed to quit smoking is Anna Banks. Anna started smoking at the age of 13, and she became a regular smoker before she was 20. When she reached 30, she decided to kick this habit out of her life. She tried many times, and every time, she would break down after a week or two and smoke again. This made her feel so anguished and she felt so ashamed of herself. After a few years, she met her husband James who couldn t smoke or smell smoke because he had an allergy. Anna fell deeply in love with James, and she knew that she couldn t be with him if she continued to smoke, so she decided to do everything she can to end her smoking habit. This time, she felt that her decision is stronger than before, and with James help, she managed to stop smoking, and though she suffered a lot for 6 months, yet she carried on and didn t give up because she didn t want to lose James. Anna is working now with an organization that fights smoking, and she always helps people by telling them about her story and how she succeeded in freeing herself from this awful addiction.
