HIGHLIGHTS Wittenberg Home of Martin Luther and the birthplace of the Protestant Reformation when Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the church door in 1517. Several of its buildings are associated with events of this time. Part of the Augustinian monastery in which Luther dwelt, first as a monk and later the home of his wife and family, is preserved and considered to be the world s premier museum dedicated to Luther. Later, J.S. Bach was to be titled The Second Luther as so much of his life and music was inspired by his Lutheran spirituality. Leipzig Luther came to Leipzig in 1519, two years after nailing his 95 Theses in Wittenberg, and it became the setting of his public clash with the Roman Church. Later, J.S. Bach was Cantor of St Thomas Lutheran Church for 27 years from 1723, during which time he composed or revised much of his church music, using Luther s translation of the bible into German. His music continues to be greatly celebrated here. Friedrich Schiller wrote his poem Ode to Joy in this city. Eisenach J.S. Bach was born and brought up in Eisenach until he was ten years old, and both he and Luther were pupils at St Thomas School after which Luther completed his theological studies in Erfurt. Luther returned to famously translate the Latin bible into the German language here from 1521-1522. Bach s musical genius was born in Eisenach - alongside his initials JSB he would write - SDG for the glory of God alone. The Bach House Museum offers a rich exploration of the extensive Bach family links with Eisenach. ACCOMMODATION Wittenberg Hotel Luther Birke Wittenberg - rural setting.
