2. Landon, Fred; Edited by Milo M. Quaife. Lake Huron (The American Lake Series). Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Company Publishers, 1944. Later printing. 398pp. Octavo [22 cm] Green cloth with gilt stamped titles on the front board and backstrip. Illustrated endpapers. 5. Hague, Arnold; Charles D. Walcott (Director). Atlas to Accompany Monograph XXXII on the Geology of the Yellowstone National Park. Washington DC: Department of the Interior United States Geological Survey; Lithographed by Julius Bien & Co., New York, 1904. First edition. Atlas only. Elephant folio [56 cm] Brown cloth over boards. The spine and boards are worn, primarily at the edges. There is a minor numerical notation on the title page. The sheets are toned, else they are in fine condition. Complete. Ex-libris American geologist and paleontologist Gilbert Dennison Harris, with his name and fossil shell bookplate on the front pastedown. Harris, the State Geologist for Louisiana between 1899 and 1909, founded the scientific journal Bulletins of American Paleontology. $500 Arnold Hague's monograph (not present here) and atlas are still viewed by geologists today as some of the most in-depth studies of Yellowstone to have ever been performed.

6. Jenkins, John H. Audubon and Other Capers: Confessions of a Texas Bookmaker. Austin: The Pemberton Press, 1976. First edition. 120pp. Quarto [28.5 cm] Mustard yellow paper over boards, with slight warping to the boards. In a dust jacket, with only trivial soiling, and a shallow closed tear in the top edge. $30 Inscribed by the infamous John Jenkins, in the year of publication, to Mormon bibliographer Chad Flake on the front free endpaper.

7. Ward, Lynd. Madman's Drum: A Novel in Woodcuts. New York: Jonathan Cape Harrison Smith, 1930. First trade edition. Octavo [22 cm] 1/4 black cloth over black and white pictorial paper over boards with a paper title label on the spine. With the publisher's black top stain. Black endpapers. There is a thin loss from the head of the backstrip, which measures 1" wide by under 1/4" deep. There are several short splits in the cloth at the foot of the backstrip, and there is a large area of light glue staining on the front pastedown. The text block is just beginning to crack about 3/4 of the way in. In a dust jacket, with darkening (more pronounced on the spine), and periodic small chips to the edges. The jacket's spine is also creased. Despite these flaws, the jacket is quite attractive. Dance 005. $800 Lynd Ward (1905-1985) was an American artist most famous for his wood engravings in particular, his novels without words, in which he tells a story only with woodcuts. His style mixes Art Deco with German Expressionism. This is the second of Ward's six wordless novels. This copy is signed by Lynd Ward on the half title page.

8. The spine ends are gently bruised. In a dust jacket, with darkening (more pronounced on the spine), two short closed, creased tears to the top edge, and a small moisture stain on the spine. Despite these flaws, the jacket is quite attractive. Dance 005. $400 Lynd Ward (1905-1985) was an American artist most famous for his wood engravings in particular, his novels without words, in which he tells a story only with woodcuts. His style mixes Art Deco with German Expressionism. This is the second of Ward's six wordless novels.

9. Hyde, Laurence. Southern Cross: A Novel of the South Seas. Los Angeles: Ward Ritchie Press, 1951. First edition. 255pp. Duodecimo [18 cm] 1/4 red cloth over black boards. Title gilt stamped on backstrip. Silhouette woodcut in red on front board. Very slight musty smell; covers cocked. $250 Introduction by Rockwell Kent. A wordless novel in the tradition of Frans Masereel and Lynd Ward that tells the story of an island in the South Pacific (clearly Bikini Atoll although the author states otherwise in the introduction) and the idyllic and simple lives of the native inhabitants whose lives change dramatically with the arrival of a [U.S.] military presence and atomic testing. One of the most dramatic and chilling wordless novels ever produced.

10. Austin, Mary. Can Prayer Be Answered? New York: Farrar & Rinehart, 1934. First edition. 55pp. Small octavo [21 cm] Black cloth over boards with silver stamping. The endpapers are subtly discolored along the hinges. In the illustrated dust jacket, with light soiling, toning (more so at the spine), and very occasional small chips in the edges. Dance 062. $100 Illustrations from woodcuts by Lynd Ward. From the dust jacket- "Mary Austin has discovered and proved that prayer is one of the most effective instruments of action known to modern man. Her work with the American Indians, precipitated by a crisis in her own life, led her to conclusions about the art and science of praying that make this one of the most significant contributions to world knowledge."

12. Swann, G. A.; N. G. Bailey. Geology of the Apollo 14 Landing Site in the Fra Mauro Highlands (U. S. Department of the Interior Geological Survey Professional Paper 880). Washington DC: Government Printing Office, 1977. 103pp. Quarto [29 cm] Gray printed wraps. With 7 plates in the rear envelope. $125 Prepared on behalf of the National Aeronautics and Space Museum. From the Abstract- "Apollo 14 landed in the Fra Mauro highlands on February 5, 1971... The materials of the area are interpreted to be part of the large deposit of ejecta from the Imbrium basin and appear to be older than the materials of the maria. Because of its relatively old age, the regolith is thicker than on the typical mare, and the ages of the various surfaces within the landing site are reflected in the size-frequency distribution of rock fragments. Since lunar materials generally darken with age, their albedos serve as a general indication of the relative length of time that they have been exposed at the surface. Polarimetric properties and albedo appear to be useful signatures for comparative studies of lunar materials."
