Application Information Mosaic Scholarship An Instrumental Scholarship for African-American and Latino Students

Mosaic Scholarship The Applica on Form, Essay and Le ers of Recommenda on must be postmarked no later than April 15. Audi ons will be held in May. The Mosaic Scholarship provides talented African-American and La no students with a unique experience to become immersed in the world of classical music. Scholarship recipients receive private, one-on-one lessons with a Grand Rapids Symphony musician, concert ckets for the Mosaic Scholar and their family, and much more. Funds for the Mosaic Scholarship were made possible through a gi from the Kellogg Founda on, which is managed by the Grand Rapids Community Founda on, and administered by the Grand Rapids Symphony. Who is eligible to apply for the Mosaic Scholarship? Any African-American or La no instrumental student ages 12-18 (with at least one year of high school remaining) living in or a ending elementary, middle or high school in Kent County, and who has been playing their instrument for more than one year is eligible to apply for the scholarship. What is the applica on process? Students and their parent/guardian must complete the Applica on Form. Student applicants must include at least two (2) signed le ers of recommenda on. One le er must be from the student s school music instructor. For elementary school students the second le er must be from the student s classroom teacher. Addi onal le ers are strongly encouraged and can be submi ed from a pastor or other religious leader, coach, principal, or leader of another organiza on with which the student regularly par cipates. Le ers should not be from a parent, guardian or family member. Students must also write an essay: NEW APPLICANTS: Essay should include the importance of music in their lives and why they would like to be selected as a Mosaic Scholar. RETURNING MOSAIC SCHOLARS: Essay should include why the Mosaic Scholarship is important to them and what they have valued in the previous year. Are there restric ons concerning which instruments applicants can audi on on? All students are welcome to audi on, but preference will be given to instruments commonly used in the modern symphony orchestra (violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, percussion, harp).

How are the Mosaic Scholarship winners selected? The winners will be selected by audi on. The audi on commi ee is comprised of Grand Rapids Symphony musicians and staff. Following the audi ons, students will be no fied by mail if they are a Mosaic Scholarship recipient. What are students required to play for their audi on? Students are required to play two (2) pieces of contras ng style (e.g. Fast/Slow, Baroque/Roman c, etc.) Any music acceptable for the Solo and Ensemble audi ons is also acceptable for the Mosaic Scholarship audi ons. Students should consult with their school music instructor to select their repertoire for the audi on. If I am a Mosaic Scholarship recipient, how will I pick a teacher and when will my lessons start? Grand Rapids Symphony staff will pair each Mosaic Scholarship recipient with a GR Symphony musician who will be their teacher. It is the responsibility of the Mosaic Scholar and the teacher to contact each other to select a mutually agreeable date and me for lessons. How will the scholarships be paid out? Your scholarship money will be paid directly to your teacher. Is there anything else that I should know? Yes! In addi on to receiving money for your lessons and studying with a Grand Rapids Symphony musician, being a Mosaic Scholar provides you with a number of opportuni es that will be available only to you! Here are some highlights: 1. A end open rehearsals sit on stage next to your teacher for a GRS rehearsal to hear what it s like to be in a professional orchestra. 2. A end GRS concerts FOR FREE! - as a Mosaic Scholar, you and your family will be eligible to receive complementary ckets to select GRS concerts. 3. Meet GRS Guest Ar sts get the opportunity to meet and speak with select guest ar sts who are performing with the GRS. Music books and supplies all your music books and supplies as selected by your teacher for the me you are a Mosaic Scholar will also be provided free of charge. 5. Instrument Rental if you do not own an instrument and are currently paying to rent one, your scholarship will also cover the cost of your instrument rental while you are a Mosaic Scholar.
