LPO 2019/2020 Season Dear LPO Friends and Family, There is so much to love about living in southeastern Louisiana, a community that appreciates deep-rooted traditions while simultaneously delighting in the unexpected. Reflecting this spirit, the LPO's 2019-2020 season will explore two programmatic threads inspired by the unique place we call home. The first thread is Music of the Americas. Highlights include the world premiere of a commission by New Orleans' own Courtney Bryan, a trumpet concerto I recently had the pleasure of co-commissioning by Arturo Márquez, works by Copland and Ives, and LPO principal bassoonist Jack Peña s performance of the Brazilian composer Hector Villa-Lobos' Ciranda das sete notas. The second thread launches a multi-season celebration of one of music's most famous disruptors: Ludwig van Beethoven. 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of the composer s birth. Whether it s the Eroica and Pastoral symphonies, the Emperor piano concerto, or the Leonore Overture No. 3, you will enjoy Beethoven s works in performances designed to create the same sense of wonder first-time listeners felt. Also highlighted this season, we will perform pieces by Haydn and Mozart that undoubtedly influenced Beethoven s development as a composer.
