UAB STERNE LIBRARY Cite While You Write Plug-In for Microsoft Word Cite While You Write Plug-In The Cite While You Write (CWYW) plug-in is used to insert references and format citations and bibliographies automatically while writing a paper in Microsoft Word. It can be downloaded and installed by clicking on the Format tab then Cite While You Write Plug-In then Download. The Cite While You Write plug-in creates an tab in Microsoft Word 2007. Citations Toolbar The Find Citations button is used to insert citations in a Word document. It is used to find a reference in the library and insert the citation into a Word document. The citation appears at the cursor location and is formatted according to the specified citation style. The reference information is automatically added to the bibliography. The button is used to go to the library.
The Edit Citations button is used to edit citations in a Word document. It is used to include or exclude information in the citation after the citation has been inserted, add or remove a citation, change the order of citations in a group, and edit or update a reference. Bibliography Toolbar The Style menu is used to specify the citation style in a Word document. The Update Citations button is used to update citations in a Word document. It is used to format or reformat a Word document according to the rules of the specified citation style. The temporary citations in the document are replaced with formatted citations and a bibliography is built at the end of the document. The Convert Citations button is used to convert citations in a Word document. It is used to convert formatted citations into unformatted citations in a Word document. The options include convert to unformatted citations, convert to plain text citations, and convert Word 2007 citations to Cite While You Write citations. The Bibliography button is used to format a bibliography in a Word document. It is used to format the citations and bibliography according to a specified style or appearance in a Word document. The options include document to format, citation or output style, temporary citation delimiters, font face and size, bibliography title, numbering, indenting, spacing, and instant formatting. It is used to export the EndNote Cite While You Write traveling library, the Word 2007 citations, and the Word 2007 master list of citations to the library. The Preferences button is used to specify preferences for Cite While You Write. It is used to select the Cite While You Write preferences. The options include the ability to enable or disable instant formatting, modify the setting to show Microsoft Word field codes, customize the shortcut keys, enter the account information, and select the default target application when using both EndNote desktop and. The Help button is used to display the table of contents for the online help.

Find Citations The Find Citations button is used to find a reference in the library and insert the citation into a Word document. References can be found and citations inserted by placing the cursor in the location where the citation should appear in the Word document. References can be found by clicking on the Find Citations button and typing the keywords into the search box. Citations can be inserted by selecting the reference and clicking on the Insert button.
Insert options include insert both author and year (default), insert year and exclude author, insert author and exclude year, and insert and exclude both author and year. Multiple references can be inserted as a citation group by selecting each reference while holding the Ctrl key. References can be inserted as a footnote or an endnote by using Microsoft Word to insert the note then clicking on the Find Citations button. Edit Citations The Edit Citations button is used to include or exclude information in the citation after the citation has been inserted, add or remove a citation, change the order of citations in a group, and edit or update a reference. The citation style options are imported from the default or customized bibliographic style list under the Format tab in the library. Update Citations The Update Citations button is used to format or reformat a Word document according to the rules of the specified citation style. The temporary citations in the document are replaced with formatted citations and a bibliography is built at the end of the document. Convert Citations The Convert Citations button is used to convert formatted citations into unformatted citations in a Word document. The options are convert to unformatted citations, convert to plain text citations, and convert Word 2007 citations to Cite While You Write citations.
The Unformatted Citations option is used to convert formatted Cite While You Write citations into temporary citations in a Word document. The formatted citations become temporary citations and the bibliography is removed. The formatted citations and bibliography can be restored using the Update Citations and Bibliography button. This option is useful for formatted citations with errors that require editing of the records in the library. The Plain Text Citations option is used to convert formatted Cite While You Write citations into plain text citations in a Word document. The formatted citations become plain text citations and the Cite While You Write field codes are removed from the citations and bibliography. The formatted citations and bibliography can not be restored so a new document should be created and saved with a different file name to retain the original document. This option is useful for the electronic submission of a formatted document without Cite While You Write field codes to an instructor or a publisher. The Word 2007 Citations option is used to convert Word 2007 citations into Cite While You Write citations in a Word document. Bibliography The Bibliography button is used to format the citations and bibliography according to a specified style or appearance in a Word document. The options are format bibliography, layout, and instant formatting. The Format Bibliography option is used to select the document to format, specify the citation or output style, and change the temporary citation delimiters. The Layout option is used to select the font face and size, specify a title, and change the numbering, indenting, and spacing for the bibliography. The Instant Formatting option is used to turn on or off the automatic updating of the bibliography as new citations are added to a Word document.
