Annie R. Morgan Elementary Arlington Elementary Drop Everything and Read! Every student in every classroom (both ELA and math) will participate in Drop Everything and Read (DEAR). Students will have the opportunity to enjoy independently reading a book of their choice. Teachers should take this opportunity to catch up on a good book and model how enjoying reading can be. DEAR will start promptly at 8:45 am and end at 9:00 am. Don't forget to remind students to log their reading! Reading is so Cool- Wear your Shades Student Bookmarks! Every student will create their own personal bookmark. Blank bookmarks will be provided to you and placed in your box. Be as creative as you wish decorating your bookmarks. Team Up and Read: Wear your team shirt Fractured Fairy Tales A fractured fairy tale is a traditional fairy tale that is humorously rewritten with unexpected characterization, plot developments, or using a different point of view. Students will watch a version of a fractured fairy tale online and then complete an activity based on the selected fracture fairy tale. Use this piece of literature to teach your focus standard based on your action plan, if applicable. Some activity suggestions are: discussing the elements of the fractured fairy tale, making connections between the traditional fairy tale and the fractured fairy tale, discussing characteristics, creating a story map, comparing / contrasting the traditional fairy tale and the fractured fairy tale, or writing your own fractured fairy tale. I have attached some printable fracture fairy tale activity ideas. These are just suggestions. Select an activity that suits your classroom, your instructional focus, and your schedule. Cedar Hills Elementary Crown Point Advertise a book: Students can work in groups to create an advertisement for a book using construction paper that will encourage others to read. When the advertisement is complete, have groups of students showcase (advertise) for the rest of the class. This may be done in two sessions... one to plan and one to showcase. This works especially well with students who have participated in guided reading lessons or literature circles, since the students have already read the same book. Grandparents are invited to share lunch with students, books will be provided at decorated tables for grandparents to read to students. A mystery guest reader will be featured on the news each morning for the students to guess. This reader will use a pirate voice to disguise themselves. Teachers may submit guesses to win a visit from mystery guest. Week Long Activities: -Name the Book: Guess the title and author of famous first lines read during the morning announcements. - Book in Hand: Students bring a new or slightly used book to school. The school will donate the books collected to a charitable institute such as a hospital or homeless shelter. -Create a school-wide reading wall: ELA classes will select a Caldecott winner picture book. Discuss how aspects of the text's illustrations contribute to what is conveyed by the words. After reading and discussing connections, the class will create a poster card that depicts the book cover and includes Tuesday: Jersey Day, wear your favorite team jersey. Guest readers will be local high school sports teams as well as usual readers. Sports will include football, basketball, cheerleading, and soccer. Literacy Feather Mural Students will decorate/write the title of their favorite poem/author on a feather that will be used to create a giant school wing mural. Terry Parker High School KICK OFF for Literacy Week: SPREADING LITERACY ONE VIEW AT A TIME: Students will be told before Winter Break about the Florida department of Ed YouTube contest and be encouraged to create a YouTube submission that communicates how they share literacy or the importance of reading in their lives. Submissions will be judged by the number of YouTube views. In SCIENCE class, students will be able to view submissions that have already been made by Terry Parker classmates and will be encouraged to submit their own YouTube submission before the February 1st deadline. RANCHER FOR AN ANSWER: On Tuesday and Thursday, a literary question will be asked on the morning announcements. The Guidance Counselors will be in the cafeteria to give out Jolly Ranchers to those students who can answer the question of the day correctly. They will have some follow-up questions to ask so that students may win even more candy! CHARACTER DRESS UP DAY: Students will be encouraged to dress like their favorite character (within dress code). A group picture will be taken during 2nd block of all the students who participated which will be displayed at the University Park Library. LIFETIME of LITERACY: Emphasis will be put on connecting students with the Jacksonville Public Library. A librarian from the Jacksonville Public Library will be in the cafeteria to promote signing up for a public library card as well as to explain to students how to use their DCPS student IDs to check out books and use data bases at the public library or public library website. BOOK FESTIVAL DAY 1: Students from the Leadership Class (and any others who want to) will prepare trifolds of a favorite book to display in the library and do short book talks as elective classes walk through. Students will vote on the best display and a Barnes and Noble gift card will be given to the winner(s). Twin Lakes Academy Elementary Open the Door to Reading LAUNCH LITERACY CAMPAIGN BY CELEBRATING FAMILY LITERACY WEEK "Open the Door to Reading": Teachers and students decorate classroom doors. The Design Team will choose a winning door to be announced on the Tuesday morning news. "How Many Books?" Students can submit their guess to Mrs. Rigdon for how many books are in the Media Center to win a prize. "Advertise a Book" -Students work in groups to create an advertisement for a book, like a commercial, that will encourage others to read. Students can create a jingle, write a script, act out a part or model the advertisement after familiar television advertising. Use props as necessary.
