You ll want to share it, but time is running. This is our committee s fourth festival, and we think it s our best one yet.! The intimacy of a small retreat is still there, but the experience is even better. The performers are still wonderful, but they re even more accessible. We are still a community of hot musicians and not-musicians, but there s more workshops for advanced players, for beginning players and for just hanging out and listening. We still showcase our own performers, but there s more opportunities for fest guests to share the spotlight than ever before. We still have plenty of music around every corner, but we ve got more corners than ever. That last thing about corners is just a joke. A Special Boogie Event Morristown Unitarian Fellowship Fundraising Dinner Sat., 10/26, 6pm The Folk Project s Valentines Day Big Boogie Band is honored to team up with the The Flaming Chalices, MUF s rock band, to form one hot, shoe-kickin rock n roll mega-band. We re calling it The Flaming Folk Chalice Project. The music will be great. And so will the evening. Friday, 10/4: A Folk Project Special Concert A Tribute to Joni Mitchell s Blue Album Joni Mitchell s iconic Blue Album performed in sequence by Chicks with Dip, an all-woman s performing cooperative based in Westchester County, NY. For this Folk Project Special Concert only, tickets will be $15 in advance, or $20 at the door. Tickets and more detailed information available at Concerts. FolkProject.org. Fri., 10/18: Buskin & Batteau with Avi Wisnia David Buskin (guitar, keyboard) and Robin Batteau (fiddle, guitar) first played together as Tom Rush s backup band. The combination was too good to remain in the background. Not only were they brilliant musicians and singers, they were both superb songwriters. (David Buskin is well known as one third of the hilarious Modern Man.) They toured into the 90s to great acclaim before going their separate ways, and their loyal fans still remember. Buskin & Batteau are back together again and coming to the Minstrel. Opener Avi Wisnia represents the best in the pop-oriented singer-songwriter genre: A great voice, an exciting stage presence, and great songs finding inspiration in classic Brazilian bossa nova, acoustic American folk, 1950 s west-coast jazz, and contemporary pop. He plays piano like he was born to it. Photo 2009 Jake Jacobson Fri., 10/25: Mulebone, Rick Ilowite Mulebone is the acoustic blues duo of guitarist Hugh Pool and floutist John Ragusa. What? Did he say blues flute?? Yes, flutes in all different sizes and variants. Think Jethro Tull. Combined with Hugh s kick-ass guitar, harmonica, and vocals, they rock out with both old school blues from the American South and original songs in the same styles. These guys are exciting and entertaining whether you re a blues aficionado or not. Opener Rick Ilowite is a fingerstyle blues guitarist who has been called traditional without puritanical blinders. He s at home with the Piedmont style of his mentor Jorma Kaukonen (of Jefferson Airplane), but, like Jorma, can strap on a Strat and wail as well. Rick, a past president of the Folk Project, returns to the Minstrel after an absence of almost 15 years. We hold shows almost every Friday, year round, and the second Friday of the month is usually an open stage/audition night. The music we present is folk music in its broadest sense. That is, in addition to traditional American and ethnic folk music (in its purist definition), we welcome music of contemporary, primarily acoustic songwriters, and other types of music more folkie in attitude than in content. Shows start at 8pm; dress is casual. We serve coffee, teas, and baked goods. There is no alcohol or tobacco on the premises. Admission is inexpensive; on our regular Friday concerts we ask $8.00 on your way in and, if you feel the show was worth it, an additional amount at your discretion on the way out, which goes to supplement what we pay the feature performer. Folk Project Special Concerts Presents Joni Mitchell s Blue A 40th Anniversary Celebration A Special Concert at The Minstrel Friday, October 4 Featuring a stellar cast of some of the New York City area s finest female singer/ songwriters plus Philadelphia percussionist Cheryl Praksher. The evening will include performances of all the songs from Blue plus original songs inspired by Joni Mitchell. Performers include: Meg Braun, Anna Dagmar, Honor Finnegan, Sharon Goldman, Victoria Lavington, Catherine Miles, Karyn Oliver, Elisa Peimer, Cheryl Praksher, Allison Scolla, Carolann Solebello, Allison Tartalia. These 12 women, known collectively as Chicks With Dip, represent a loose affiliation of female singer/songwriters in the New York City area who enjoy each other s company and the pleasures of good conversation, good songs and good dip. The Chicks will celebrate their tenth anniversary this year. Folk Project Board Meeting September 3, 2013 Board Meeting: The Summary The Folk Project Board Meeting was called to order at 8:02 pm at the home of Lindsey Meyer, by Vice-Prez Pam Robinson, in the absence of President Elizabeth Lachowicz. Present were: Pam Robinson, Pat Brangs, Mike Agranoff, Allan Kugel, Lois DeRitter, Joanne Cronin, Lori Falco, Mike DelVecchio, Bob McNally, Mark Schaffer, Lindsey Meyer, Jean Scully, Jim Gartner, Barrett Wilson, Bill Henderson, Eddie Roffman, Scooter Ferguson, and Rachel Streich. Absent: Elizabeth Lachowicz, Nancy Kelner, Leigh Walker, Gloria Friedman, Grover Kemble. Guest: Christine DeLeon. August Board Meeting minutes were accepted without corrections. TREASURER S REPORT: Bill reported, It looks like UkeFest will be close to breaking even. OLD BUSINESS: JOB OPENINGS: Pam asked us all to keep looking for viable candidates for the Newsletter Editor,Publicity Chair and Community Services Chair positions. COMMITTEE REPORTS: SPECIAL CONCERTS: Scooter highly praised, one by one, by name, all the volunteers for their hard work and enthusiasm, who helped make the UkeFest such a wonderful event. Post-event feedback from UkeFest performers was equally enthusiastic: Jack Rickenback of Celtic Spirit had a fantastic time, Victoria Vox sold more product than all other performers combined and had a great time. Jim and Liz Beloff had the time of their lives and would love to come back to the Folk Project. James and Ann had a fantastic time. Feedback from attendees was very positive; one commented, Best uke festival they d ever been to. Vendors also had a wonderful time: Tom from The Music Den in Randolph, NJ brought 18 ukes to sell, and sold half of them. Music Den now offers group uke lessons. They will become a corporate FP member, will advertise in our newsletter, and we anticipate that some of their students and customers will become FP members. Scooter also met Tom McMillian, a uke nut and President of the Morris Arts Council, who suggested the possibility of a joint FP/ Morris Arts Council concert or other event and who encouraged us to apply for a grant from the Arts Council. Scooter also praised MUF s custodian, Eduardo, who is a big FP fan, and who was extremely helpful during UkeFest. He will write to MUF in praise of Eduardo, and we will give Eduardo and his family free admission to the Minstrel anytime they want to come. Since UkeFest, Eddie noted we ve gotten six new memberships; Mike A. said he s gotten 40 new Minstrelgram sign-ups; and Barrett said he can t remember the last time he gave out so many first-timer get-in-free cards. Mike A. commented that the uke community shows what is diminishing from the folk community: doing music as a social activity as opposed to performance. E-COMMUNICATIONS: Lori sent two emails advertising UkeFest, including video links to YouTube in the second email. In addition, we got 55 new signups from UkeFest to add to our Constant Comment contacts database. FESTIVAL: Mark reported that we now have 73 people registered for Fall Festival (almost half full), six weeks before Festival. Mark will be doing a live radio interview with WDVR this coming Thursday. Festival flyers are being distributed to local Open Stages. INTERNAL AFFAIRS: There will be no October Evening of Music due to Fall Festival. Jean is still looking for locations for November and December EoM s. The August EoM at Mario s Pizza in Randolph, hosted by Mike & Christine Del Vecchio, was a rousing success. Jean asked for ideas for workshops (possibly a uke workshop?) that would lead into an EoM. MINSTREL BOOKING: Elizabeth and Mike A. met with Nina McCormick and Alison Miller of MUF recently to establish communication, address complaints and to try to mitigate the recent rent increase. MUF s attitude: we want you here. Mike asked that the rent increase be spread over three years; they will consider it. They don t like the acoustic panels we put up in the Sanctuary; the panels are dirty and take up too much space on stage. Mike has volunteered to personally foot the bill to re-cover the panels in a fabric and color of MUF s choosing. Meeting adjourned at 10:10 pm. Deja vu all over again... Rachel Streich is playing temporary host to her mom, who arrived in New Jersey from the west coast on August 14. As soon as mom s apartment is finished and ready for occupancy, Rachel will get her own space back. Pat Brangs recently started a rather aqueous part-time endeavor teaching water aerobics classes. Music set lists and exercise routines now fill her days, and she is thoroughly enjoying this new job. Allan Kugel: His dad is retiring this week after working for...wait for it...!!! SIXTY YEARS!!! doing financial analysis work with the same company! Yeow... Congratulations Allan s father! Joanne Cronin has recently returned from vacationing in Ashville, N.C. with her good friend, Paula Entin. They both had a good time. Lori Falco is now the proud owner of a brand spanking new All Koa Martin T1K Ukulele!!! She became smitten with this instrument at the Folk Projects recent Uke New Jersey Festival, and is now enjoying a relaxed, low key relationship (mostly C, D, and E minor) with her new love. Performance requests are being politely declined at the present moment, but Lori says the future is wide open... Bob McNally is now the proud owner of a brand spanking new retort to the question of asymmetry in Ukulele profiles: It all has to do with the Non Uke clidian Geometry... Bob also made and presented a first annual Uke Award to Scooter Ferguson for Scooter s part in conceiving and executing a brilliant Special Concert concept (Uke New Jersey, August 30 / 31, 2013). Scooter Ferguson, at the recent Uke New Jersey Festival, purchased a concert size Flea Ukulele (Aloha Red by Magic Uke) and presented it to his wife, Julie. Nice... Mark Schaffer recently attended the first Wearable Device Conference, and continues to develop and market his smart watch texting invention (ARGOtext.com) to potential manufacturers/distributers etc. He s learning first hand the benefits of a flexible development and marketing plan based on the hard cold realities of market feedback, and has begun re-imagining his device with new videos and other presentation media. Jean Scully shared with the Board that Phyllis Heistand passed away recently. Her husband, Dave, was with her to the end. A memorial service will be held on Sat., 9/28 at 11am at St. James Episcopal Church, 214 Washington St., Hackettstown. Interment will be private. Jean also recently lost one of her cats to seizures resulting from diabetes. BUT she is loving her prolific garden, and recently harvested ten pounds. of tomatoes, plus an abundance of peppers, eggplants, etc. Jim Ward begins next week serving on Jury Duty. And more importantly, Jim will be performing his Uke Debut, 6pm, 10/6, at the Church of the Redeemer talent contest. Good luck, Jim! Sandie Reilly: (Via email) reports that she lost her father-in-;aw on August 16 after a long decline. On the positive side, Sandie is heading out to Colorado for a week of coaching ParaCyclists at the Olympic Training Center. As Sandie mentioned, sometimes when one door closes, the whole world opens up. How blessed. Nancy Kelner reported that Russ was honored as the only beginning player to be asked to accompany the more experienced Rondalla musicians at a Holy Family celebration at a Bergenfield church last month. There were at least 500 people there and the ensemble did a fine job. Russ is learning bandurria and has been asked by the group to mentor other beginning musicians at the weekly lessons. 13
