The Extravaganza spotlights two dozen Project performers, and our Valentine s Love Trio under the direction of Frank Sole, and our 10-piece Loving Hearts Club Big Boogie Band. THE DINNER will be catered through the generosity of Jersey Mike s Submarine & Sandwich Shop, and the Folk Project Board. We ll serve our extra special Extravaganza desserts, and for the first time ever we ll serve everyone delicious sandwiches, too. Tonight it s three cheers for the volunteers. Great show! Great food! April 2013 The Minstrel Acoustic Concert Series presented by Fri., 4/5: Lou & Peter Berryman with Dave Kleiner Rescheduled from cancellation after Hurricane Sandy Lou & Peter Berryman rank with such geniuses as Flanders & Swan, Tom Lehrer, and Alan Sherman as masters of the art of comedic song. Peter especially, who does most of the lyrics, has an uncanny sense of the English language to put the perfect words to music that bring a smile, irrespective of the subject matter. The subject matter can range from flights of fancy, to carrying an unlikely concept to its even less likely conclusion, to simultaneous interlocking dialogue by two people about entirely different subjects that somehow seem to connect to each other. Peter plays 12-string guitar and Lou plays a seeing-eye accordion. (You ll see what we mean.) Dave Kleiner is a perfect opener for the Berrymans. A past Folk Project president, Dave is familiar to Minstrel regulars for his shows with his wife Liz Pagan. Tonight s program will feature mostly Dave solo, focusing on his own wacky wordy songs and offbeat sense of humor. Fri., 4/12: Open Stage This is an opportunity for all acoustic musicians to perform a 15-minute set on our stage, and for the audience to be treated to a diverse collection of acoustic musicians. We ve often seen previews of our regular scheduled acts for the first time at Open Stage. For information on how to secure a performance slot, call (973) 335-9489, or go to folkproject.org/minstrel/ openstage.shtml. Sun., 4/14: Valentines Day Extravaganza SPECIAL 5pm SHOW Rescheduled from the snowed-out February date. This all-folk Project show is a perennial favorite. Twenty-four different members perform songs extolling the joys and woes of love in all its grandeur, foolishness, heartbreak and comedy. Many singers are backed by Project pros, either our ten-piece Valentine s Day Loving Hearts Club Big Boogie Band (including Railroad Earth s Andy Goessling) or Frank Sole s Valentine s Love Trio. This year the trio will feature guest artist and Jersey jazz great Grover Kemble. Audience-composed Messages from the Heart and delicious desserts make this a unique community event. Special admission price of $9 includes refreshments. Fri., 4/19: Annie & The Hedonists with Tumbling Bones Annie and the Hedonists knocked everyone s socks off at the Spring 2012 Folk Project Festival. This great high-energy multi-instrumental 4-piece band features the expressive singing of Annie Rosen with great harmonies and hot guitar, bass, keyboard, and clarinet by Hedonists Jonny Rosen, Peter Davis, and Don Young. They put their unique stamp on old jug band tunes, torchy blues, standards, bluegrass, gospel, labor ballads, and early jazz. Tumbling Bones is a young old-timey (oxymoron intended) trio featuring fiddle, guitar, and banjo, with great traditional vocal harmony. They play old time dance music and country blues with an authentic feel that belies the fact that they re all in their 20 s. Fri., 4/26: Christine Lavin with The Lords of Liechtenstein Christine Lavin is the Folk World s long-reigning Queen of the Intelligently Absurd. The title of one of her earlier albums, I Don t Make This Stuff Up, I Just Make It Rhyme says it all. She has an eye for the ironic and the absurd in the news and everyday life, and puts it into song. And dresses it all up in skillful guitar work, electronic loops, and wonderful gimmicks like baton twirling. She s irrepressible, and ya gotta love her. Dan and Noah Rauchwerk masquerade as The Lords of Liechtenstein. These irrepressible brothers, ages 18 and 24, play surprisingly sophisticated original songs accompanied on guitar, banjo, and ukulele. They create an innovative blend of folk, roots, reggae, and pop music, presented with charming inter-song shtick, bedecked in the latest in GenZ sartorial hipness: sweater-vests. UPCOMING: 5/3: Ellis, Greg Klyma; 5/10: The Stray Birds, Ken & Pat Rolston; 5/17: Open Stage; 5/24: Closed for Spring Festival; Fri., 5/31: Suzie Vinnick, Cold Chocolate; Fri., 6/7: The Folk Goddesses, Christopher Mark Jones; Fri., 6/14: Open Stage; Fri., 6/21: Louise Mosrie, The Twangtown Paramours; Fri., 6/28: Andrew Dunn The Minstrel is an acoustic music concert series run by the Folk Project, a non-profit folk music and arts organization. We use the facilities of the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown, NJ. We hold shows almost every Friday, year round, and the second Friday of the month is usually an open stage/audition night. The music we present is folk music in its broadest sense. That is, in addition to traditional American and ethnic folk music (in its purist definition), we welcome music of contemporary, primarily acoustic songwriters, and other types of music more folkie in attitude than in content. Shows start at 8pm; dress is casual. We serve coffee, teas, and baked goods. There is no alcohol or tobacco on the premises. Admission is inexpensive; on our regular Friday concerts we ask $8.00 on your way in and, if you feel the show was worth it, an additional amount at your discretion on the way out, which goes to supplement what we pay the feature performer. Children 12 and under are free. For travel information or information on shows, call (973) 335-9489 or visit our website at www.folkproject.org. To volunteer em ailvolunteers@ folkproject.org Sat., 4/6: Bob Isaacs, Perpetual e-motion Afternoon Advanced Contra Dance and Evening Dance John Coté - guitar, didgeridoo, feet, vocals, electronica; Ed Howe - fiddle, electronica Bob Isaacs will be calling Advanced Contras and Grid Squares for two hours in the afternoon, 4pm 6pm, followed by our regular evening dance from 8pm to 11pm. $10 afternoon/$15 evening [$5/$10 evening for students]. Folk Project Board Meeting March 2013 Board Meeting: The Summary The February Meeting of the Folk Project Board was called to order at 8 pm at the home of Bob Safranek and Pam Robinson. TREASURER S REPORT: I m still learning says Bill. Former Treasurer Rachel reported that Forms 1099-MISC for 2012 have been prepared, mailed to recipients and filed with the IRS. COMMITTEE REPORTS: SPECIAL CONCERTS: In Scooter s absence, Mark Shaffer reported that 11 tickets were sold so far for the Anne Hills/Michael Smith house concert at his and Robin s home on 3/9/13. The Evening of Music is also taking place that evening at the Shaffer s, beginning 2 hours after the concert ends. There will be another house concert at Mark and Robin s featuring Raina Rose, on April 21. Mike A. reports that Scooter s planned ukulele Special Concert event may be moved to Labor Day weekend to accommodate an appearance by Susan Werner at MUF on 8/21/13. SWINGIN TERN: Leigh reports that Swingin Tern is doing pretty well. They are planning 4 big event dances per year, including the upcoming double dance with Perpetual E-Motion on 4/6/13. Mike A. says he saw Perpetual E-Motion at Dance Flurry recently and says they were freaking incredible. There will be another techno contra dance on the first Saturday in September. There will be no Tern Swings dance this year, as they have come to realize that contra dancers and FP members don t come to swing dances, and swing dancers don t seem to contra dance, so there s no overlap. PUBLICITY: Nancy reports that on 2/27/13, 12 FP members came to the Fanwood Library to see Barry Mitterhoff in concert. Fanwood Library director Danny Weiss (Barry s bandmate in Silk City) played with him, and publicized Silk City s upcoming Minstrel appearance on 3/22/13. INTERNAL AFFAIRS: The Valentines Day Show, cancelled due to a snowstorm, has been rescheduled for 4/14/13. Mark is organizing it and is planning to turn it into a volunteer appreciation event. Instead of desserts, they will be serving dinner (sub sandwiches) plus drinks and desserts. Mark is getting the subs from Jersey Mike s below cost. Minstrel volunteers will get in free; general admission will be $9. Mark asks that if you are planning to come, to please let Jean or Mark know so they will know how much food to order. Maximum capacity in the MUF Sanctuary is 180 so that is the attendance limit for the event. MINSTREL BOOKING: Average attendance for February was 78.3. This was for only 3 shows, as the Valentines Day show was snowed out. New bookings: 7/5/13 Falcon Ridge Preview show featuring Gathering Time, The YaYas, and Honor Finnegan; 7/19/13 Toby Walker with Tom Picard opening; 8/23/13 Susan Werner (tentative); 10/18/13 Buskin & Batteau with Copper Ponies opening; Cindy Mangsen & Steve Gillette rescheduled to 2/7/14 from their original November date. FESTIVAL: Mark reports that so far, there are 70 people registered for Spring Festival, 3 months in advance. He and Robin expect to max out at 150 160 attendees, including performers. Tom Chapin has been booked for the Sunday concert. FP member performers include the Copper Ponies, Tom Hagen, and Ian Hicks. Pro performers will do (1) 1-hour set plus 3 workshops rather than the usual (2) 45-minute sets and 2 workshops because we will have more pro performers at this festival than usual. The meeting was adjourned at 9:58 pm. Next month s meeting will be on April 2 at Nancy and Russ Kelner s home in Cranford. This musical getaway combines outstanding acoustic concerts with entertaining workshops and activities at a low all-inclusive price. Expect a welcoming three-day community infused with music and immersed in fun. FEATURING: Tom Chapin In a career that spans five decades, 23 albums and three Grammy awards, this multi-talented singer/songwriter/guitarist has established a reputation for insightful, heartfelt songcraft and effortlessly charismatic live performances. In addition to his work as a recording artist and concert performer, Chapin has acted on Broadway, as well as working extensively in films, television and radio. Brother Sun Three national-touring headliners, Joe Jencks, Greg Greenway and Pat Wictor, have taken the acoustic concert world by storm. Fusing folk, Americana, blues, pop, jazz, rock, and a cappella singing, the trio s rich blend of voices is an explosion of musical diversity and harmony. Cliff Eberhardt Cliff s guitar playing, singing, and original folk songs and blues make for a compelling, thought-filled, emotional roller coaster of a concert. He is renowned for his work with Richie Havens and Melanie, and as a moving force in NYC s second folk music revival. Mike + Ruthy Mike Merenda is an artfully prolific songwriter with an indie rock soul and feather-touch vocals. Ruth Ungar is an earthy singer, with the unmistakable stage presence of a natural-born performer. Their original songs are lyrically sophisticated, harmonically beautiful, and true to the very core of the traditional and timeless American roots music. Their instrumentals are monumental. Jacob Johnson Jacob is a one-of-a-kind acoustic virtuoso, blending dozens of techniques and styles to craft a sound he calls Neo-Acoustic Folk/Funk. His off-thecuff sense of humor and tongue-in-cheek sensibilities are an energetic joy. His lyrics are thoughtful and realistic, delivered with a wry charisma. PLUS: Ian Hicks: Ian is an amazing singer/songwriter, with writing and performing skills beyond what we expect in a 14-year-old. He s equally adept at executing his original material or the folk and rock standards of a much earlier generation, and brings a crystal-clear voice and engaging stage presence. The Copper Ponies: Annie Donahue and Erik Balkey intertwine authentic roots with contemporary perspectives. Their lean sound focuses attention on beautifully blended voices and powerfully moving lyrics. Peter Hagen: Peter is a fine singer and collector of cowboy songs. He is known around Project circles for his bass playing behind Circle Round the Sun and Bob Andrews & Friends. The Guitar Parlor: Ace luthiers and instrument repairists Bil Mitchell and Sarah Deiterichs of The Guitar Parlor in Riegelsville, PA will teach us how to choose, evaluate, purchase, maintain, repair, and even build guitars. They ll give insight into all instruments, including our own instruments, and they will help us with simple repairs and instrumental advice. For Musicians Three days packed with learning, jamming, performing and sharing your music. Workshops range from beginner to master levels. You could win our lottery to perform at the big Saturday night concert! Guests choose one talented attendee to be featured at our next festival. For Music Lovers Three great concerts, more than 40 workshops. No need to play an instrument to enjoy and contribute. Plenty of non-music workshops: Crafts, book club and outdoor recreation. Shy? Join our Learn It, Sing It choir and you can perform surrounded by festival friends. For Everyone An affordable, exciting and fun-packed mini-vacation. Plenty of outdoor activities. A family-friendly atmosphere and shared musical experience. For registration and more information: www.folkproject.org/festival
