18mm ECAM Cable Entry Port Instructions October 2006
1.0 Introduction The 3M 18mm ECAM (External Cable Assembly Module) Cable Entry Port Kit is designed to accept fiber optic cables with external diameters from 0.20-0.71" (5-18mm). It will accommodate cables with both single or dual cable strength members (CSM). This kit will accommodate armored cables but requires the use of a grounding kit that must be purchased separately. 2.0 Kit Contents A. (1) Cable gauge decal B. (1) ECAM body C. (1) Locking fork E. Cable grommet F. (1) ECAM nut G. (2) screws H. Cable strength member (CSM) clamp J. Cap K. Cable clamp sets 1 and 2 L. Spacer rings M. Silicone lubricant N. CSM support tube Visually inspect all components. If any component is missing or appears damaged, do not install and call 3M customer service at 1-800-426-8688 for a replacement product. 3.0 Dielectric Cable Preparation Loose Buffer Tube Cable 2.5 ±.25 (65mm) TRIM SINGLE OR DUAL CSM RODS C M J L K H B G E N A F 48 (1.2m) SHEATH REMOVED Central Tube Cable Single Fiber and Ribbon 2.5 ±.25 (65mm) TRIM SINGLE OR DUAL CSM RODS 8 CENTRAL TUBE 48 (1.2m) SHEATH REMOVED 3

Grounding kits must be purchased separately: ECAM-GND-6-AWG...80-6113-1702-7 ECAM-GND-14-AWG...80-6113-1704-3 5.0 Component Selection 5.1 Place cable gauge on cable as shown. 5.2 Wrap cable gauge around cable. 5.3 Read between the arrows to determine the following: A. Cable grommet (bushing) size B. Cable clamp set required C. Trimming of tabs on each half of cable clamp set D. Spacer ring required. Note: If cable gauge choice lines up with a dividing line use the component or follow directions specified in area directly below on the decal. A B C D 4
A. Cable Grommet Selection:. Select cable grommet per gauge. (NOT TO SCALE) A C A B C D D 0.20-0.31" (5-8mm) 0.31-0.43" (8-11mm) 0.43-0.55" (11-14mm) 0.55-0.71" (14-18mm) B. Cable Set Selection Select cable clamp set 1 or 2 per gauge. Note: Identifying number in area shown. B SET 1 SET 2 Cable Screw Cable Nut Cable Nut Cable Screw C. Tab Removal on Cable s If gauge indicates TRIM break off all tabs on corresponding cable clamp halves using pliers or cutters. Breaking off outer tabs then removing inner as shown below works best. Arrows indicate tabs D. Spacer Ring Selection If the cable gauge decal indicates the letter A, B or C, remove the corresponding spacer ring from parts tree. Spacer rings are identified in the area shown. Remove the inner part of spacer and discard after selection is made. No spacer is required if area is blank on the cable gauge decal. A A Discard 5
6.0 3M ECAM Pre-Assembly on Cable 6.1 Loosely assemble screw clamp set and ECAM nut as shown and slide on cable. Note: Rounded corners on clamps must face away from ECAM nut. 6.2 Next add spacer ring to cable if required. 6.3 Lubricate grommet using supplied silicone lubricant and slide on cable. Note: Carefully follow health and safety environmental instructions as given on Material Safety Data Sheet for the silicone lubricant. 6.4 Slide ECAM body on cable as shown. Round Corners ECAM nut Cable Screw 3M ECAM nut Spacer Grommet 3M ECAM body Cable Nut 7.0 Final Assembly of ECAM 7.1 Loosen CSM clamp screw. 7.2 Slide CSM rods into clamp and position end of the rod(s) against stop. Large diameter CSM rods may require trimming.
7.3 Smaller single CSM rods can be reinforced by sliding brass CSM support tube over the rod. Shorten support tube by cutting after installing on CSM rod. 7.4 Tighten CSM clamp screw 20 in.-lbs. ± 5 in.-lbs. Note: can be also used for loose fiber strength member. Braid fiber and secure under clamp screw. 7.5 Install cap over CSM clamp. Tie wrap fiber to cap. 7.6 Slide grommet into 3M ECAM body. 7.7 Screw on ECAM nut and cable clamp assembly on to ECAM body. 7
7.8 Fully tighten 3M ECAM nut on the body until there is no gap between the ECAM body, nut or spacer ring. No Gap 7.9 Tighten cable clamp screws using 5/16" (8mm) nut driver to 20 in.-lbs. ± 5 in.-lbs. 8.0 ECAM Installation in Closure Base 8.1 Clean any dirt from port in closure base. 8.2 Inside closure remove port plug locking fork and pull plug out of closure. 8.3 Lightly lube both the o-ring seal area base port and the ECAM o-ring using the supplied silicone lubricant. LUBE LUBE Note: Carefully follow health and safety environmental instructions as given on Material Safety Data Sheet for the silicone lubricant. 8
8.4 Feed fibers through port and push 3M ECAM firmly into port after aligning the hex on ECAM with hex opening in base. ECAM should protrude through base as shown. 8.5 Install locking fork by sliding fork into groove on the ECAM while holding the clip parallel with the groove in the ECAM. 8.6 Fully seat locking fork into groove. 8.7 If required install grounding at this time. ECAM can be rotated during installation to provide easier access to cable sheath tab. Wrap sheath and ground connection with vinyl tape. 8.8 Route fiber per closure instructions. 9
