1. AUSTEN (Jane). Northanger Abbey: And Persuasion. By the Author of "Pride and Prejudice", "Mansfield Park", &c. With a Biographical Notice of the Author. In Four Volumes. Vol.1. First Edition of vol.1 only. 12mo. [192 x 115 x 24 mm]. xxiv, 300 pp. Bound in publisher's original blue paper covered boards, white paper spine with printed paper label, plain endleaves, uncut edges. (Joints partly split, loss of paper at foot of spine, corners bumped and a few marks). [ebc7244] London: [printed by C. Roworth, Bell-yard, Temple-bar for] John Murray, Albemarle- Street, 1818 1750 Gilson A9. Volume I only, but in the original boards, with uncut edges. As on A. Edward Newton's copy the price of "24"s was cut away from the foot of the spine label, and Gilson notes that this practice was also found in the case of copies of the first edition of Emma. Some light and inoffensive foxing or spotting and two small wormholes in the inner margin from p.189 to the end. A sewing pin has been attached to pp.ix-xii and a slip of paper with ink blottings has been inserted as a bookmark between pp.178 and 179. Austen's final published work, pairing her last completed novel with the light-spirited satire that was probably the first full-length novel she wrote. Her brother Henry's biographical notice, dated 13 December 1817, is the first acknowledgement in print of Jane as the author of the six novels.

Ink signature of Sheila Davie dated 1940. 10. AUSTEN (Jane). Northanger Abbey and Persuasion. Woodcut frontispiece of Catherine Moreland opening the cabinet. 8vo. [193 x 130 x 26 mm]. 448p. Warwick House, Salisbury Square, E.C.; New York: 10 Bond Street, [c.1885] 150 Gilson E58, for a Ward, Lock and Co. edition dated 1881, printed by W. H. Smith & Son as "Select Library of Fiction" No.190, though Gilson had not traced a copy. He notes that it is a reprint of the Chapman and Hall edition of 1870 (E39). This edition is undated and printed by Swift & Co. as "Select Library of Fiction" No.166 according to the eight pages of advertisements at the end. Persuasion has a separate title-page, but the pagination is continuous. A few spots but a good copy with ink inscription on half title "To Jack with hearty Xmas greetings from Auntie Pollie Xmas 1892". Booklabel of John Jordan (no.43).

12. AUSTEN (Jane). Northanger Abbey and Persuasion. Photographic frontispiece captioned "When the Butler would have lit his Master's Candle, however, he was forbidden". 8vo. [188 x 122 x 19 mm]. 448pp. Bound in publisher's original red cloth, the front cover and spine decorated in white and black, plain endleaves and edges. (A little faded and marked). [ebc7224] London: [printed by Bradbury, Agnew & Co, Ltd for] George Routledge and Sons, Limited, Broadway House, Ludgate Hill, [c.1890] 150 The front cover states this to be from "The Ruby Series" and Gilson E44 dates the Series to 1876. However, our copy does not correspond to his description in any way and is probably later. A good copy. With signatures of Winifred Jolliffe and Eva Winans.

13. AUSTEN (Jane). Northanger Abbey and Persuasion. 8vo. [190 x 124 x 31 mm]. 448pp. Bound in publisher's original plum coloured cloth, front cover lettered in gilt, spine blocked and lettered in gilt, brown decorated endleaves with "GRS" monogram, top edge gilt. (Lower joint split at head, spine a little faded, headcaps rubbed, inner hinge weak). [ebc7226] London: [printed by Woodfall & Kinder for] George Routledge and Sons, Limited, Broadway, Ludgate Hill, Manchester and New York, [c.1890] 125 Gilson E64, for edition of 1883, which has 9 Lafayette Place in New York in the imprint and no mention of Manchester. In this issue Woodfall & Kinder's address is given as 70 to 76 Long Acre, where they moved in 1889. First few leaves a little loose and lightly browned at the edges, but a good copy. With signature of R. H. Elliott and booklabel of John Jordan (no.70).

14. AUSTEN (Jane). Northanger Abbey and Persuasion. Woodcut frontispiece of Catherine Morland opening the cabinet. 8vo. [189 x 120 x 26 mm]. 448pp. Bound in publisher's original green cloth, covers and spine blocked in brown, with a gilt block on the front and gilt lettering on the spine, black glazed endleaves, plain edges. (Rubbed and a little soiled, corners bumped). [ebc7230] London: [printed by Woodfall & Kinder for] George Routledge and Sons, Broadway, Ludgate Hill. New York: 9 Lafayette Place, [c.1890] 125 Gilson E64. With the same imprint as Gilson's edition of 1883 and Woodfall and Kinder's address is given as Milford Lane, Strand, London. However, this appears to be a later issue which Janine Barchas dates to c.1890, and suggests it was designed for the American market. Mark Twain owned a copy in the same binding. A few chips to the fore-edge of the opening pages, light foxing to preliminaries and edges, and a few spots. Pencil signature of W. Maxwell Croft and booklabel of John Jordan (no.69).

15. AUSTEN (Jane). Northanger Abbey. 8vo. [185 x 123 x 20 mm]. 219, [3] pp. Bound in publisher's original red cloth, front cover and spine blocked in black and lettered in gilt compartments, rear cover with a small black block, pale yellow glazed endleaves, plain edges. (Short split at foot of lower joint, headcaps a little worn, sewing weak). [ebc7219] London: [printed and published by] Richard Edward King, 88 Curtain Road, E.C. [c.1890] 175 Not in Gilson and unrecorded on COPAC. With a half-title and a final page of advertisements for "The Home Instructor Library". The title describes Jane Austen as "Author of "Sense and Sensibility", "Mansfield Park" Etc. Etc". Cheaply produced, but a good copy. With pencil ownership inscription "Megaw [...] University Road, Belfast".

16. AUSTEN (Jane). Northanger Abbey. 8vo. [185 x 123 x 22 mm]. 219, [3] pp. Bound in publisher's original plum coloured cloth, the front cover and spine with blind lines at head and foot and lettered in gilt, plain endleaves, top edge gilt. (Lacking front free endleaf, small stain on front cover, a little rubbed and bumped). [ebc7243] London: [printed and published by] Richard Edward King, 88 Curtain Road, E.C. [c.1890] 175 Not in Gilson and unrecorded on COPAC. Another copy of the same edition as item 15 but in a different binding. With the half-title and same advertisement for "The Home Instructor Library" at the end. Browned as a result of the poor quality paper, but a good copy. Booklabel of John Jordan (no.72).

17. AUSTEN (Jane). Northanger Abbey. 8vo. [183 x 120 x 24 mm]. 219, [5] pp. Bound in publisher's original green cloth, the front cover and spine blocked in blind and lettered in gilt with a gilt wreath on the spine, plain endleaves and edges. (Endleaves browned and a little brittle with small loss). [ebc7227] London: R. E. King & Co. Ltd, 106 to 110 Tabernacle Street E.C. [c.1895] 175 Not in Gilson and unrecorded on COPAC. With five pages of advertisements at the end (in alphabetical order ending with Mrs. E. Prentiss) for "The Imperial Library. Cheap, Popular Works for the Family Circle. Tastefully bound in coloured cloth". The other Austen was Mansfield Park, and we have an edition dated to 1895 with the imprint "Richard Edward King, 88 Curtain Road, E.C." The title describes Jane Austen as "Author of "Emma", Etc, Etc". It was indeed cheaply printed, on poor quality paper, which has browned. It is still a very good copy. Booklabel of John Jordan (no.77).

18. AUSTEN (Jane). Northanger Abbey. 8vo. [179 x 120 x 25 mm]. 219, [5] pp. Bound in publisher's original light green cloth, the front cover and spine blocked in dark green, plain endleaves and edges. (Spine a little darkened, slightly marked). [ebc7242] London: R. E. King & Co. Ltd, 106 to 110 Tabernacle Street, E.C. [c.1895] 175 Not in Gilson and unrecorded on COPAC. Another copy of the same edition as item 17 but in a different binding. We have the same advertisements again ending at P with Mrs E. Prentiss. The paper is browned, as is to be expected, but it is still a good copy. Booklabel of John Jordan (no.75).

19. AUSTEN (Jane). Northanger Abbey and Persuasion. New Edition. 8vo. [186 x 120 x 30 mm]. [2]ff, 440pp. Bound in publisher's original light green cloth, front cover and spine blocked and lettered in gilt, plain endleaves, top edge gilt. (Slightly rubbed and marked). [ebc7229] London: Ward, Lock & Bowden, Limited, Warwick House, Salisbury Square, E.C., New York and Melbourne, [c.1895] 150 Gilson E58, for edition dated 1881, printed by W. H. Smith & Son, as "Select Library of Fiction" No.190, though Gilson failed to trace a copy. This is a later issue, and the type is heavily worn. James Bowden entered into partnership with Ward and Lock in 1891 and they became a Limited Company in 1893. A strip has been cut from the head of the front free endleaf, but a good copy. Booklabel of John Jordan (no.44).

20. AUSTEN (Jane). Northanger Abbey. Photographic frontispiece captioned "Bath, compared with London, said Mr. Tilney, has little variety". 8vo. [188 x 127 x 19 mm]. 223, [1], 12 pp. Bound in publisher's original blue cloth, front cover and spine blocked in brown and green and lettered in gilt, plain endleaves and edges. (Lacking free endleaves, a little rubbed). [ebc7225] London: Blackie & Son, Limited, 50 Old Bailey, E.C. Glasgow and Dublin, 1895 150 Gilson E81, which is in a variant binding of brown cloth lettered in black and gilt, with four leaves of advertisements at the end. Our copy has 12 pages of advertisements at the end for "Blackie & Son's Books for Young People", and a list of "Famous Books for Boys and Girls" at the front. Some soiling to title and text. Booklabel of John Jordan (no.113).
